In 1974 I completed my B.A. in Art and my M.A. in 1975. Then I began teaching art at Fresno City College; extension courses for the University of Santa Cruz and at Chapman College. Since I have always been one to experiment I have consistently found new avenues and new media to express my art. For some years I worked exclusively with acrylic and later with watercolor, winning awards and exhibiting in International Shows in both these media. Then, I had a ten year lapse when I just dabbled with air brush, batik, stained glass, pottery, sculpture – you name it! It was a time of searching. For what - I had no idea! But as fate would have it, in March, 2010, my three daughters and I decided it would be fun to take a pastel workshop together from Leslie Harrison in Sutter Creek, CA. It was my first introduction to pastels. However, after returning home, my box of pastels were tossed aside and for the next three months I spent time getting ready for a watercolor show with two other artists. The week of the show’s reception I had back surgery. I didn’t paint for the rest of the year. In 2011, I dug out my pastels and knew immediately I needed help with this new medium. So, I signed up for classes under Tina Moore, the then President of the Pastel Society of the West Coast and I began studying portraiture in earnest, learning the importance of that spark of life that defines a good work of art. Fortunately, I took every workshop that came my way , studying with many wonderful pastel artists including two mentorships with Richard McKinley. I have been working with pastels now since 2011. In that time I have received my Signature Membership in the Pastel Society of America; The Pastel Society of The West Coast and The Sierra Pastel Society and I have received three of the five points necessary to qualify for the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) Master Circle. I have also exhibited in many International Shows and have been honored to win awards on several occasions. As to publications I have been privileged to be published in the following: The International Artist’s Magazine; The Artist’s Magazine and SouthWest Art Magazine. I was also published in a book by North Light Publishing Co. and edited by Rachel Wolf entitled “Art Journey: The Best of Contemporary Portraits and Figure Art” In addition to these publications, my painting “Golden Glow” dons the box lid of the newest set of French Manufacturer - Sennilier’s Pastels - 30 half stick landscape set. I am a full-time artist, painting every day. Passionate about my art, I paint with a sense of peaceful quiet from deep within. I hope that this serenity passes on to those who view my works.

Message from our President I hope that your summer has been a fun and productive one, art-wise. We are looking forward to seeing your latest creations at receiving for ACA’s annual Open Show, “All Things September”, at CMS main gallery. You will want to join us at Art Hop on Thurday, Sept. 3rd for the Artists Reception and Awards Presentation at 6 p.m.

While at Art Hop you should also visit your ACA Gallery where the Showcase Wall is featuring the latest works by eight artists from Marilyn Torchin’s Plein Air Tuesday Group. The ACA Gallery’s September featured artists are: The Myatts, Larry and Kathy, and your President, Adrian Perenon.

A lot has been going on this summer, with the happiest news being that Chris Sorensen has added two more very large fans to the big meeting hall to help cool things down where ACA holds its meetings and demonstrations. And speaking of demonstrations, I have to acknowledge and thank Linda Erickson for organizing that aspect of ACA’s program. She has kept the demos going and interesting, and she leaves us in good shape for the rest of the year.

Kudos too to Lena Bradford for her very successful promotion of and sell-out for the workshop by Fabio Cembranelli, for Sept 3, 4, and 5. Thank you Lena.

Thanks too to the ACA artists who participated in June, July and August in our gallery exhibits, and for being at Art Hop these hot summer nights at Sorensen’s: Roberta Davis in June on the Showcase Wall; Shirley Unruh in July on the Showcase Wall; and Julia Tinker in August on the Showcase Wall; and special thanks to the families who just participated this August in the “Heart to Heart” exhibit. It is very gratifying to see art by grandkids, kids, and even a grandparent or two. We appreciate the support from the families and our fellow members.

A last item to be addressed: donations of paintings offered for raffles to raise money for ACA. First, I must thank Roberta Davis and Deborah Pepin for donating a painting each to help ACA raise money that goes into its scholarship fund. They are generous to do so, and we thank them. For ACA artists wishing to donate a painting to raffle off to raise scholarship funds, we will acknowledge your donation with a letter that indicates the painting’s value (you tell us its value) and that it will be used in a fundraiser. That way you can declare your donation in your IRS filing. ACA’s status as a 501c3 non-profit organization allows us to raise funds in that manner. It’s just like donating your old shoes to Goodwill…. but classier.

See you in the Gallery Adrian Perenon

GALLERY BUZZ

September Gallery Buzz

September in the Gallery is a very special month! Since we are encouraging all our members to enter our Open Show in the Main Gallery in Sorensen's we have a "One Man Show", or in this case, a "Three Man Show" in the ACA Gallery for that month. ACA President, Adrian Perenon, will be presenting his artwork, along with Kathy and Larry Myatt. They will be showing their fabulous mosaic works of art! A must see!

It will be a terrific ArtHop on Thursday, September 3rd, 5-8pm

If you were in the Gallery in July you couldn't miss the fantastic pen & ink 'doodle', "Nothn' But Bubbles", by Deborah Peppin! Well, the good news is she SOLD it Right off the Gallery Wall! And then... when he came to pick it up, he liked her work so much he bought another one of her paintings. Oh happy day! That's what we're there for!

August in the gallery was full of pride and smiles! Our annual ❤heArt to heArt❤ Show "Celebrating the ARTistic Family" was just amazing. It was really heartwarming to see how families share their love of art together. It is a very special show! The Art Hop "People's Choice" of the show was "Stuffed Box" by Marissa Walker, "Portrait" by Makayla Davis, both of Roberta Davis' family group, "Parrot, painted in 1919" by Emil O. Strauss (Trudy's Granduncle) and "Silhouette in the Leaves" by Dales Claes ( Connie Claes family). Good job done by all!

If you have something up in the Gallery please take it down on August 29th, the same day as receiving for the Open Show.

The next receiving for the Gallery is September 26th and ArtHop is October 1st... We will be back to the two month schedule and the Art will hang for October and November! Already thinking of November. Boy where does the time go?

HAVE A WEBSITE?  LET US KNOW!One of the benefits of ACA membership is that we will link your name to your website under Membership. If you have changed your website address, or created a new one you wish to share, please send it to Trudy Sweet at [email protected] with "Website" in the subject line. She will make sure it gets on the ACA website for you.
