whole staff and gather around one of the many fireplaces for a time of debriefing, and reimagining

your camp experience for 2015!

We hope you’ll take every opportunity to enjoy all that the Retreat and Bear Creek have to offer.

Our committee has worked hard to create an Experience that provides opportunities for education,

In Emergency Response, Great Plans Are a Smart Thing; Training is Everything!

Bo Mitchell

Smart plans are critical. But, if we don’t get the words off the paper andinto people’s heads, we have failed. Sandy Hook reinforces that trainingis everything given that people can’t and won’t run to look at binders forresponse in a real emergency. Learn why your employees are really thefirst responders, not police, fire and EMTs. What are the legalrequirements for training? What are the current practices and obstaclesin organizations regarding training? What are the proven ways to trainfor emergency response? How does your organization compare?

Spring Creek

The Sustainable Camps Movement

Thomas Hart

Implementing sustainable initiatives into your camp programs andfacilities will result in three outcomes: Reduce your environmental impact, provide an educational opportunity for your staff and guests to take backto their home community and save money through more efficientconsumption of resources like energy and water. This session will startwith an engaging and thought provoking activity to help us adjust ourperspectives about how each camp can implement sustainable initiativesthat reflect the diverse and unique programs we each operate.

Mountainside

Raining Cats and Dogs…Responsibly

Chicka Elloy

Getting to know who you trust with your campers is a priority for thecamp director. Providing a space to understand stories, build a cohesivestaff while empathizing with trials and successes is a part of what makescamp great. In this session, we will peek behind the curtain of campprofessional profiles with "the circle of life" at camp. Proven techniquesto work with hired staff members that don’t fit the peg hole, professionalsthat have different styles than you, and how you can develop your staffto harmoniously survive in the camp ecosystem.

Bear’s Den

What is a Master Plan, and Why Bother?

Doug Gillespie and Arch Horst

A thoughtfully organized, inclusive master planning process can producelong term and multi-faceted benefits for your camp. If the process beginsby focusing on what makes your camp distinctive (its history, values, setting and buildings), the resulting master plan will accurately identifythe most important physical improvements needed for the next five toten years, their likely costs and articulate the case for fund raising, ifnecessary.

Providing training on the safe use andoperation of equipment reduces the chances of injury to staff and guests, which can save on insurance costs in both worker’s compensation claimsand law suits arising out of injuries to guests. Getting More From Facebook

Peter RossCan you honestly say that you recruited a bunch of new campers lastyear due to Facebook? Better yet, how many leads did Facebook getyou? Of the traffic it referred back to your website, how many of thoseusers actually went on to request information or register? For mostcamps, the answers to these questions are rather depressing. Despiteinvesting an inordinate amount of time into social media their return oninvestment is bleak. However, a number of innovative summer campshave begun to use Facebook a bit differently and the results are prettyunbelievable. During this session, we’ll take a sneak peak at the backendof these camps’ Facebook marketing campaigns to determine how bestto manage your camp’s social media presence.

Marketing Camp To Non-Traditional/Neophyte Families

Andy PritikinWe’re all capable of preaching to the choir, but what about to neophyte parentswho never went to Camp themselves? “Memories that Last a Lifetime” andother typical tag lines and marketing techniques are useless, and maybe evenrepellent to the uninitiated. How do we push these folks over the fence to evenTRY Camp? How do we get them to realize that Camp is as important as weall know it is? Framing the Camp experience in a way that resonates to non-camp families is challenging, but SUPER-DUPER IMPORTANT, as there are aLOT more non-camp families out there than camp families to fill up our camps!

I’ve trained with the Pennsylvania Rural WaterAssociation in aspects of leak detection, water treatment and waterline distribution and installation. I also run a small farm on my ownproperty and maintaining equipment is essential. My time with theYMCA of Greater Pittsburgh at Camp T Frank Soles has taught methat keeping with in my budget is critical to keeping the doors open.I have incorporated my previous experiences into this Camp toproduce effective methods to streamline operations and cut costswhile maintaining the practices that are safe and effective andreflective of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. In this time of astruggling economy it is critical that as Property Directors we workto keep our camps working at peak efficiency in all areas whilemaintaining a positive image that directly impacts to keeping ourguests returning year after year.
