Peter Ellegard reports ietnam is the rising star of the East in golf tourism. The country’s first international- standard course opened near Ho Chi Minh City in 1994. In 2008 the country was named Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year at the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Awards. Since then, golf’s taken off in Vietnam. The country won the destination of the year in Asia and Australia award in the IAGTO Awards in 2013 — and 2016. The pace of development there is rocketing, too. Vietnam has around 40 courses, with the same number under construction and 40 more on the drawing board and licensed. Within 10 years, it will have more than 100 courses, many as part of resorts. It isn’t just quantity, either. Quality is very much the watchword. Many top golf architects have Vietnam designs already open or planned, and courses are distinguishing themselves one by one. Bluffs Ho Tram — a Greg Norman course at the Grand Ho Tram Strip coastal resort — was named the best new golf course at the World Golf Awards in 2015. Weeks later, the Ho Tram Open was voted Asian Tour event of the year by tour members (staged as part of the Asian Tour circuit, it was won by Sergio Garcia). From clusters around Ho Chi Minh City, capital Hanoi, and Danang on the central coast, golf is now spreading along Vietnam’s 2,000-mile coastline. Hotspot Danang is central to the Golf Coast Vietnam marketing package (golfcoastvietnam.com). Its fourth course, Ba Na Hills — the first-ever Luke Donald design — opened in March. There are plans for another two courses by 2018. Resort owner Vinpearl is expanding its offering with plans for 14 courses on the increasing popular holiday island of Phu Quoc, close to Cambodia. Further projects include development in the Hanoi and Haiphong regions. Meanwhile, Hanoi-based developer FLC Group has invested $1 billion in golf resorts in four coastal Vietnam locations, with plans to build 20 more courses over the next five years. Sam Son, its first integrated resort, opened 100 miles south of Hanoi, earlier this year — as did a Jack Nicklaus course at Quy Nhon between Nha Trang and Danang, along with a 500-room hotel. viewingTHE V IBELike much of East Africa, Tanzania is what

you make of it. There are luxury lodges

to live out far-fetched fantasies; some of

the best game viewing in the world in the

Serengeti, and private tropical islands

offshore for a post-safari escape where you

can kick your shoes off and even swim with

dolphins. Whether you wander through

the atmospheric alleys of Stone Town in

Zanzibar or the vibrant streets of the capital,

Dar es Salaam, there is plenty of opportunity

to mix with locals.

THE CROW DTanzania isn’t one of Africa’s cheapest

corners, so the region attracts a mix of

Europeans and Americans — mostly with

time on their hands and deep pockets to

delve in. Mid-market travel is possible

but takes a bit of planning to separate the

memorable wheat from the tourist chaff.

THE HOTEL SHow many zeroes can you handle? The likes

of Mnemba and Thanda offer world-class

private island experiences, while Singita

sets the bar high at its luxury Grumeti safari

camps. Local hotels may not be quite as

slick, but service is warm and welcoming.

THE GOLFThe top course lies in the shadow of Mount

Kilimanjaro, near Arusha. The Kilimanjaro

Golf & Wildlife Estate hosted the 2016

Tanzania Open and is a demanding track

with dramatic views from many of its 18

holes. Laid out by David Jones, it’s kept in

excellent condition with greens built to

USGA specifications. A new clubhouse and

pro-shop opened in late 2016. Tanzania’s

only other championship layouts are in Dar

es Salaam. Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Golf

Course dates back to 1926 and is set close

to the city, offering a challenging par-72

layout stretching to 7,530-metres. Lugalo

Golf Club offers a more relaxed round, with

a par-71 layout rounded off with nine holes

by golf architect Howard Swan. A handful

of nine-hole courses are scattered across

the country, including the tourist-friendly

island of Zanzibar.

viewingTHE V IBELike much of East Africa, Tanzania is what

you make of it. There are luxury lodges

to live out far-fetched fantasies; some of

the best game viewing in the world in the

Serengeti, and private tropical islands

offshore for a post-safari escape where you

can kick your shoes off and even swim with

dolphins. Whether you wander through

the atmospheric alleys of Stone Town in

Zanzibar or the vibrant streets of the capital,

Dar es Salaam, there is plenty of opportunity

to mix with locals.

THE CROW DTanzania isn’t one of Africa’s cheapest

corners, so the region attracts a mix of

Europeans and Americans — mostly with

time on their hands and deep pockets to

delve in. Mid-market travel is possible

but takes a bit of planning to separate the

memorable wheat from the tourist chaff.

THE HOTEL SHow many zeroes can you handle? The likes

of Mnemba and Thanda offer world-class

private island experiences, while Singita

sets the bar high at its luxury Grumeti safari

camps. Local hotels may not be quite as

slick, but service is warm and welcoming.

THE GOLFThe top course lies in the shadow of Mount

Kilimanjaro, near Arusha. The Kilimanjaro

Golf & Wildlife Estate hosted the 2016

Tanzania Open and is a demanding track

with dramatic views from many of its 18

holes. Laid out by David Jones, it’s kept in

excellent condition with greens built to

USGA specifications. A new clubhouse and

pro-shop opened in late 2016. Tanzania’s

only other championship layouts are in Dar

es Salaam. Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Golf

Course dates back to 1926 and is set close

to the city, offering a challenging par-72

layout stretching to 7,530-metres. Lugalo

Golf Club offers a more relaxed round, with

a par-71 layout rounded off with nine holes

by golf architect Howard Swan. A handful

of nine-hole courses are scattered across

the country, including the tourist-friendly

island of Zanzibar.

Sarah Woods introduces

MEXICO

Aerial view of Mexico beach

A number have on-site hotels, so golfers can

stay at one course and play others, taking in the

sights and experiences of the cities, too. From a

city-centre hotel, you can also head out to play

courses in the surrounding countryside.

Several courses are in the grounds of former

parks. Among them is Frassanelle Golf Club,

where the fairways wind through a 500-acre,

19th-century setting; and Ca’ della Nave Golf Club

which lies in an 18th-century park alongside a

450-year-old villa that serves as the clubhouse.

The region boasts courses by other noted golf

architects. Tom Fazio designed the Paradiso

del Garda Golf Club course in the rolling hills

above Lake Garda and Peter Harradine laid out

the spectacular mountain course at Asiago Golf

Club, set on a high plateau and with an adjacent

boutique hotel and spa.

Other courses built next to grand villas include

the 27-hole Padova Golf Club, its neatly-kept

fairways and greens bordering a 17th century

villa; and Villa Condulmer Golf Club, laid out

around a palatial villa that is now a five-star hotel.

Beach-lovers are in for a treat at Pra’ delle Torri

Caorle. Its par-3 fifth hole skirts the sea and the

sixth tee juts out onto the sandy beach. Like the

nearby Jessolo Golf Club, Pra’ delle Torri is close

to beach resort Lido di Jessolo, on the so-called

Venetian Riviera. And after a round in Veneto, chill out like the

locals on the terrace with a glass of Amarone .

Lake Garda, Lombardy, Italy

Verona, Venice, Lake Garda: Peter Ellegard explores the

most impressive golfing spots in the Veneto region

I taly’s Veneto region is an area that stirs

the soul with its breathtaking scenery, its

glorious cities, its gorgeous wines and its

enviable gastronomy.

The place is a veritable tourist magnet. How

could it not be when you can soak up the ambience

of its crowning glory, Venice, with a coffee in

iconic St Mark’s Square and explore the city’s

maze of canals in a gondola; or bathe in the

thermal springs of Abano Terme, close to the

architectural marvel that is Padua.

For this is an area steeped in history, with

grand Palladian villas in abundance — classical

Romanesque mansions by 16th century architect

Andrea Palladio that spawned a style copied

across Europe, and even the US.

Add in the soaring, craggy peaks of the

Dolomites, the serene shores of Lake Garda, the

fabled medieval Verona or the Adriatic, where you

can paddle or swim along the 70 miles of gently

sloping beaches.Meanwhile, Veneto’s golf is increasingly

an attraction. (In 2013 the region was named

‘Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year’ by the

International Association of Golf Tour Operators.)

It boasts almost 20 golf courses, all of which

welcome visiting golfers. What sets them apart

from those in other parts of Italy is their diversity,

with courses laid out alongside beaches and in the

mountains. There is even a course in Venice you

can only reach by boat.

The crowdKenya attracts a mixed crowd of

European expats, safari-lovers and

With verdant rice paddies and amazing street food, golf in Vietnam is anything but ordinary. Peter Ellegard reportsietnam is the rising star of the East in golf tourism. The country’s first international-standard course opened near Ho Chi Minh City in 1994.

There are plans for another two courses by 2018.Resort owner Vinpearl is expanding its offering with plans for 14 courses on the increasing popular holiday island of Phu Quoc, close to Cambodia. Further projects include development in the Hanoi and Haiphong regions.Meanwhile, Hanoi-based developer FLC Group has invested $1 billion in golf resorts in four coastal Vietnam locations, with plans to build 20 more courses over the next five years. Sam Son, its first integrated resort, opened 100 miles south of Hanoi, earlier this year — as did a Jack Nicklaus course at Quy Nhon between Nha Trang and Danang, along with a 500-room hotel. As far as golf is concerned, things are certainly looking up for Vietnam.
