FINISHING INFORMATIONABRASIVE BELT GRINDER Operations-

Abrasive Bel t Gr inders cover three broad f in ish ingareaslo Contact Wheel for po l ish ing, deburr ing

and chamfer ing.o Flexible Belt for contours.o Platen for f lat surfaces.Somet imes too much is expected of a p la tengr inder wi th a pressure gr ind ing mechanism.Relative to platen size, only a small area of fer 'rous material can be ground. The area increaseswi th sof ter mater ia ls . Carb ide is the only h igh lywear res is tant fac ing for pressure gr ind ing. P latengrinders do not provide the precision of surface

POLISHING and BUFFING Operations-

The pol ish ing and buf f ing t rade uses cer ta interms and equipment for i ts bas ic operat ions. These are described as fol lows:

ROUGHING (or Gr ind ing) means coarse pol ish ingwi th a coarse abras ive bel t . Th is is usual ly done toremove excess material or to remove defects be-fore f ina l po l ish ing.

POLISHING means sur face improvement wi th af ine or medium abras ive bel t . Th is is usual ly inpreparat ion for f ina l f in ish ing '

BUFFING is of ten the f ina l f in ish ing operat ion.Usually a cloth or sisal wheel is used with a buff ingcompound. Sometimes buff ing is two operations -cut buff ing to remove polishing scratches and colorbuf f ing for h igh luster . Some mater ia ls and sur-faces can be buf fed wi thout pr ior po l ish ing '

HP for POLISHING or BUFFING. The f i rs t con 's iderat ion in choosing a la the is horsepower. Forpol ish ing th is can be est imated as fo l lows:For Rough ing - 2 to 4be l t w id th ;F o r M e d i u m P o l i s h i n g -

ihese few l imi ta t ions are ment ioned to d is 'courage the occasional and not obvious overuseof be l i machines wi th power feed. For handwork, belt grinder l imitations are very few and are veryobvious. In genera l , abras ive bel t gr ind ing wi l l per form anoJt of operations faster than any other method. For instance, a contact wheel be l t gr inder wi l lremove metal twice as fast as a wheel grinder. Ac'tua l ly , most contours, edges and f la ts can bef in ished in the fastest poss ib le way wi th abras ivebel t machines.

SINGLE or VARIABLE SPEED. Both rough ing andpo l ish ing can be done on a s ing le speed la the i fthe sp ind le RPM is cor rec t fo r the app l ica t ion andi f the contac t whee ls a re the same d iameter . Forusing di f ferent diameter wheels, choose a var iablespeed la the .

Buf f ing is more e f f i c ien t w i th a var iab le speedlathe

-because the buff surface speed can be

main ta ined as the bu f f wears . Consequent ly theproduct ion rate and qual i ty of f in ish are m.ain'*- t tta ined, and the cos t o f bu f fs and compounds ism i n i m i z e d .

OPERATE SAFELYEveryone wants to operate safely and for that pur-pose we mount Caut ion p lates on our machines. The Guard and Wheel Danger plate provide warn-ings about po l ish ing and buf f ing. At tent ion mustalways be given to guarding, safe wheel speeds(see chart below) and eye protection during opera-t ion. E lect r ica l swi tches must be turned of f dur ingwheel or be l t changing and maintenance. Fur ther ,a grinding (hard) wheel must never be used on anymachine descr ibed in th is cata log.The Combustion Danger plate warns about the ig-n i t ion, combust ion and explos ion hazards of co l -lected part icles. The danger is part icularly greatwi th non-meta l l ic and non- ferrous par t ic les andflammable substances.

The in t roduct ion of heat , sparks or f i re must best r ic t ly avoided. A lso there could be unforeseenigni t ion. Accumulat ions must be avoided. Thusthe co l lect ion system and col lector must bec leaned of ten.I t is common pract ice to connect abras ive bel tmachines and pol ish ing or buf f ing machines to in-dependent dust co l lectors or to a centra l co l lect -ing system. ln e i ther case the warn ings of theCombust ion Danger p la te must be heeded.
