Art not thou our God, who didst
drive out the inhabitants of
this land before thy people Israel, and
gavest it to the seed of
Abraham thy friend for ever?
1. O holy Dove of God descending,
You are the love that knows no ending,All of our shattered dreams
You’re mending:Spirit, now live in me.
2. O holy Wind of God now blowing,
You are the seed that God is sowing. You are the life that starts us growing: Spirit, now live in me.
3. O holy Rain of God now falling, You make the
Word of God enthralling, You are that inner voice now calling: Spirit,
now live in me.
4. O holy Flame of God now burning, You
are the power of Christ returning. You are the answer to our yearning:
Spirit, now live in me.
Abraham is among the few privileged to
have had special
recognition with God (cp.
Enoch and David, Gen. 5: 24; Acts 13:
22).
Abraham, the Friend of God
To Abraham a great compliment was given – Jas. 2: 21-23, cp. 2 Chroni. 20: 7, Isa. 41: 8. “Friend, one attached to another by esteem, respect and affection.” Why was Abraham called “the friend of God?”
Abraham, the Friend of God
Abraham was a man of implicit obedience. Great faith is not only trusting but also obedient (Gen. 12; 22; Heb. 11: 8, 17).
Abraham, the Friend of God
Abraham was a man of closeness and promptitude (Gen. 12: 4, see also Matt. 4: 18-22; Acts 9: 20;
Acts 10: 33; 16: 33).
Abraham, the Friend of God
Abraham was a man of hospitality and generosity (Gen. 18: 1-8, Heb. 13: 2).
Abraham, the Friend of God
Abraham was a man of peace, even when it required sacrifice (Gen. 13: 5-12).
Abraham, the Friend of God
You, too, can be a friend of God!
“Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (John 15: 14).

49The life of
Abraham, the friend of God, was signalized
by a strict regard for the word of the
Lord. He cultivated home
religion.
The fear of God pervaded his household. He was the priest of his home.
He looked upon his family as a sacred trust.
His household numbered more than a thousand souls, and he directed them all,
parents and children, to the divine Sovereign.
He suffered no parental oppression on the
one hand or filial disobedience on the other.
By the combined
influence of love and
justice, he ruled his household in the fear of God, and the
Lord bore witness to his faithfulness. end
1. How far from home? I asked, as on I bent my steps - the watchman
spake:“The long, dark night is
almost gone,The morning soon will
break.
REFRAINThen weep no more, but
speed thy flight,With Hope’s bright star thy
guiding ray,Till Thou shalt reach the
realms of light,In everlasting day.”
2I asked the warrior on the
field;This was his soul-
inspiring song:“With courage, bold, the
sword I’ll wield,The battle is not long.
REFRAINThen weep no more, but speed thy flight,
With Hope’s bright star thy guiding ray,
Till Thou shalt reach the realms of light,In everlasting day.”
3. I asked again; earth,
sea and sunSeemed, with one
voice, to make reply:“Time’s wasting
sands are nearly run,Eternity is nigh.
REFRAINThen weep no more, but speed thy flight,With Hope’s bright
star thy guiding ray,Till Thou shalt reach the realms of light,In everlasting day.”
4. Not far from home! O
blessed thought!The traveler’s lonely
heart to cheer;Which oft a healing balm has brought,
And dried the mourner’s tear.
