About brandalive®

brandalive® is the brand relationship company. Our business model is based on the understanding that brands are simply relationship touchstones between people, and that developing them in partnership with those people will give the brand the best chance of success. A brand is a promise made. A great brand is a promise kept. It is people that make, break and keep promises.

Founded in 2001 as a specialist brand internalisation and engagement consultancy, brandalive® operated in partnership with Interbrand until December 2005. Since then it has broadened its scope to become a comprehensive brand development and expression consultancy, with a firm specialisation in the human aspects of brands, including brand engagement, talent branding and the development of employment brands.

What sets us apart is that we approach all our branding projects heuristically. That is to say we learn progressively from each phase, making sure we only apply our energies and resources where they are needed, and in the way we have proven they are needed.

Just as a medical professional will present a patient with a professional opinion and the various options available for treatment, tests and analysis will be conducted to prove the condition (and the order in which they should be attended to) before an operation is begun.

We apply the leading principles in brand thinking, combined with psychology and the principles of influence and persuasion, and no small measure of human instinct and deep experience to achieve our results.

About brandalive® - our philosophies

A brand is an emotional concept. It is a collection of ideas, expectations, emotions and experiences that exist in individuals’ minds in relation to companies, their people, products and services. Brands can exert powerful influence over people and markets. But the key is emotion. As humans we do because we feel. This is as true for customers buying brands as it is for employees delivering brands.

Every project at brandalive® begins with analysis. We want to know, from the people involved, what has happened, how they feel about it, and where things need to be in order for it to be great for them. Based on our insights we can establish a strategic direction and a process, based on a belief system. Expressing the brand based on this process is what builds trust, and a worthy basis from which to springboard all future activities.

These are human truths, and because a brand is vested in human emotion and behaviour, these are the truths that are our cornerstones.

Giles Shepherd / Managing Director, brandalive™

Giles co-founded brandalive® in 2001 whilst he was Group MD at Interbrand. He took the executive position of MD at brandalive® in January 2006. He has significant experience in brands and branding throughout Africa, Europe and the Middle East, having led major high profile brand development projects, including Sasol, the City of Johannesburg’s ‘ J o b u r g ’ b r a n d , T h e U n i v e r s i t y o f Johannesburg, Mauritius Telecom and the launch of Virgin Mobile in South Africa. Giles is currently President of the Advert ising Benevolent Fund, and past Chairman of the Board of Advisors to national higher education body, Unitech, He is also a lecturer and conference speaker.

Zweli Nkosi / Chairman, brandalive™

Zweli became Chairman of brandalive® In April 2007. He is a notable entrepreneur, and in recent years has developed his passion for brands and branding through his many related business interests. He holds directorships and interests with several high profile firms, including Algoa FM and Red Pepper Group. He was Executive Chairman of listed insurance holdings company, Pamodzi Risk Solutions, and he is also currently Executive Chairman of Phezulu Investment Group.

Zam Nkosi / Director, brandalive™

In addition to his directorship of brandalive® Zam is Managing Director of Red Pepper Group – a high calibre film and broadcast production firm that is a partner company to brandalive®. A trained media professional, Zam has a distinguished career on both sides of the business. His face is instantly recognisable from his acting days, including lead roles in Generations and presenting popular television programmes. Zam’s business interests are designed to reflect his passion for bringing brands to life.

Gabby Cowling / Brand Relationship Director

Gabby graduated in Marketing Management from the IMM, and has enjoyed a career spanning the breadth and depth of the marketing, advertising and branding industries over more than 20 years. Most recently she was Client Service Director at TBWA Hunt Lascaris, where she held responsibility for Standard Bank Group. She has looked after ABSA at at JWT, as well as a host of blue chip clients including FNB and Edgars at FCB. Gabby was Client Service Director for Interbrand in South Africa, and followed her deep passion for branding by moving on to brandalive®

Peter Muller / Brand Expressionist

Peter is a specialist in expressing brands to their internal and external audiences via a a multitude of means. He has extensive professional experience in graphic, digital, interactive and three dimensional design, as well as production ranging from print through audio, video and interactive.

Having started out as a digital audio engineer, Peter was a founder member of one of South Africa’s premier digital agencies – SHiFT Interactive. He has been responsible for expressing top international brands including Mini, MTN and BMW.

Craig Rode / Brand Architect

Craig joined brandalive® in early 2008, after working in a few marketing positions, and deciding to specialise in brand development. He completed a BComm in Marketing Management at The University of Pretoria with industrial and organisational psychology, and is close to completion of his part time honours degree. In his time at brandalive® Craig has been involved in every facet of the brand building and expression process on each of its client. Craig was elected a National Executive Committee member of the ABF in 2008.

Jennifer Smith / Brand Manager (KZN)

Jennifer is a passionate marketer with 18 years business experience, 16 of which were spent in sales and marketing. She has worked for leading marketing companies like L’Oreal, Unilever and Tiger Brands. She was National Market Manager for the South African Sugar Association (SASA). Jennifer specialises in the management and delivery of strategies that encompass the full value chain in order to deliver the most profitable and sustainable result to her customers.

Founded in 1995, Red Pepper is a film and television production company located in Linden, Johannesburg. The company has a substantial local and international client base and a state of the art production facility, which includes studios, equipment rentals, post-production facilities and an industry leading Design and Animation studio. Red Pepper produces daily content for SABC (including Jam Alley and Rights and Recourse), and e-tv (Craz-e). REX Creative was founded in July 2004. The partnership between Olivier Schildt and Rudo Botha originated at the University of Pretoria, where they graduated with degrees in Information Design. Rudo Botha operated as Creative Director at Interbrand before liberating to REX.
