Corridor FreightThe ports and corridors routes in Namibia are strategically positioned to give the country a competitive positioning as a transport hub for all regional and international trade between Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, Europe, the Americas, and the rest of the world.

The Walvis Bay Corridor network consists of various dedicated “cargo highways” linking Southern African countries to the port of Walvis Bay. These highways are well maintained road and rail infrastructure that ensures the safe, hassle-free and smooth flow of cargo within the region, whether it was imported or for exported purposes.

Through the corridors routes Woker Freight Services handles and manages a large portion of the freight that is transhipped through the corridor routes to clients in Angola, Botswana, DRC, Malawi, South

Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This comprises containerised goods, commodities and a fair volume of vehicles, break bulk, equipment and heavy machinery. Woker Freight Services is represented at all Namibian borders to assist with the validation and acquittal of the documentation.

Walvis BayWalvis Bay is geographically and internationally well situated for trade. This vibrant port city is about 700 nautical miles from Cape Town, South Africa and 900 nautical miles from Luanda, Angola. It is well protected by the Pelican Peninsular and has temperate weather conditions all year round. The port is well linked to the rail and road network, with international connections in telecommunications, corridors, air traffic and shipping.

Recognised as Africa’s most efficient port, exporters and importers are guaranteed a saving of at least eight to ten days when shipping cargo from and to the European and American markets. The port provides an extensive range of services including terminal facilities for containers, bulk and break bulk including frozen and dry cargo.

The port’s capabilities are on par with the various services offered by ports such as Cape Town and Durban, and is the only viable port for imports and exports for countries north of South Africa on the western seaboard. The Walvis Bay port receives between 3,000 - 5,000 vessel calls each year and handles more than seven million tonnes of cargo. The port can accommodate grounds slots for 3,875 containers, provides 482 reefer container plug points and can host about 250,000 containers.

The port’s entrance channel is 6,200m in length, 134m wide and up to 14m deep. The port’s turnaround time is competitive, with handling times for container vessels of around 12 to 15 hours. Depending on the tonnage and shipment, the turnaround time for bulk vessels averages between 24 and 48 hours, while for break-bulk vessels it averages between 18 and 20 hours. The port boasts with a variety of heavy lifting equipment including RTGs, reach stackers, forklifts, tractors, haulers, trailers, a harbour tower cranes, mobile cranes and haulage transport through local agents. Walvis Bay also provides world class marine engineering services for all ship and oil rig repair needs, with the Syncrolift and additional floating dry-dock facilities.
