Real Training for Real JobsBUILDERS ACADEMY AUSTRALIAFINALIST - 2017 SMALL TRAINING PROVIDER OF THE YEAR

Location no barrier to trainingThe tyranny of distance is no barrier to accessing the education and training programs offered by Builders Academy Australia (BAA) – a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) providing trades training through pre-employment, apprenticeship and traineeship delivery models in building and construction, site management, estimating, drafting, sales, interior design and work health and safety.

BAA was established by Simonds Homes in 2005 to train their own staff, which eventually expanded to training programs being offered more broadly beyond their employees.

With its emphasis on accessible training, 25 per cent of BAA’s Certificate IV and Diploma students are now studying via a Virtual Classroom model, increasing education and training opportunities to those living in regional and remote Victoria.

Students login to a virtual classroom at set class times from their home or office and trainers deliver each session live and interactively via video conferencing software. Students can interact with their trainer and other students live. Each session is recorded with students able to return at a later date and re-watch sections of interest.

Called their Cycle of Success, BAA’s goals is to offer a pathway from Certificate II to Bachelor studies that enables aspiring builders to up-skill and progress their knowledge, skills and career opportunities over a period of six to seven years.

Bachelor programs are delivered through an articulation partnership with Victoria University that provides 18 months’ of credit to Diploma of

Building and Construction graduates wanting to undertake one of three Bachelor of Construction Management programs.

As part of its continuous improvement strategy, BAA recently conducted focus group sessions to gain valuable insight from students on how products and services can be improved, and from employers on what current and future industry needs are required. This has resulted in a number of industry led operational and course offering changes.

“Being part of the Awards is great recognition for the positive impact we continue to have on the Victorian Building and construction workforce. I have no doubt that our strong leadership, together with the passion and professionalism of our staff, will ensure we continue our delivery of high quality and accessible training that meets current and future industry needs.” Andrew Shea Chief Executive Officer Builders Academy Australia
