Developed a device to aid in the healing in lacerated tendons, it has been documented in the American Farriers Journal. Published case studies in AF Journal. Participated as an open division competitor, winning several competitions, including the U.S. Team Championships in 2004, 2nd and 4th place in the National Team Draft Horse competition in 2006 and 2007. EQUINE FARRIERY PROGRAMa total immersion training program designed to teach students the art of farriery.

The farrier program at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University consists of three modules in equine farriery, each

providing unique skill levels.

Basic Farrier Module* WHAT: The 16-week training program will provide students with the basics of equine foot anatomy and proper trimming techniques. Students will also learn the basics of blacksmithing and shoe modifications. The module will contain 40 hours of didactic instruction and laboratory work per week.

Weeks 1-4: Anatomy of the lower limb and trimming feet to proper geometric proportionsWeeks 5-8: Blacksmithing and modification of keg shoesWeeks 9-12: Blacksmithing and the basic skills of hand making shoesWeeks 13-16: Theory and practical application of all of the above

WHEN: Offered three times a year, beginning in January, May and September. FEES: $8,000.00

Advanced Farriery Module* WHAT: The 16-week training module will provide students with advanced knowledge of anatomy and experience with in-depth assessment related to static balance, dynamic balance, and kinematic balance. Blacksmithing skills will be advanced in the area of making several different types of hand-made, as well as making corrective modifications to standard shoes.

Weeks 1-4: Limb assessment and trimmingWeeks 5-8: Blacksmithing and various types of shoesWeeks 9-12: Different corrective modifications to shoes and their applicationsWeeks 13-16: Theory and practical application of all of the above

WHEN: The module will be offered three times per year, beginning in January, May and September.

FEES: $8,000.00

Therapeutic-Corrective FarrieryWHAT: This two-week module will provide students with knowledge of therapeutic and corrective farriery applications to horses with serious injuries such as lacerated tendons, and severe limb deformities. Students will learn the construction of several different types of advanced hand-made shoes and advanced blacksmithing. These shoes include, but are not limited to, heartbar shoes, Patten bar shoes, braces. Hands-on therapeutic applications will be performed under the guidance of the equine veterinarians at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center. Students will also work with radiologist at the VMC regarding reading and interpreting radiographs of the equine foot.

The syllabus will vary based on the skill and knowledge of the students. A two-week block will typically focus on only one or two areas in therapeutic, corrective farriery. Examples include:

• Laminitic horse- Mechanics of laminitic foot- Managing acute laminitic horse- Trimming chronic laminitic horse- Mechanisms of supporting the laminitic foot

• Hoof crack and hoof wall avulsion management• Navicular syndrome/caudal heel pain• Fexural deformities

WHEN: Scheduling and availability for this module is flexible and will be determined by the instructor and applicant.

FEES: $2,000.00

* All students enrolled in the program must have the required equipment and clothing. A kit is available for purchase from the LVMC.
