About Formula SAE

SAE FORMULA is a collegiate design competition where a group of University students works

together in designing, fabricating, assembling, testing, and racing a small open wheel Formula 1 style

car targeted towards amateur autocross enthusiasts. The students must adhere to a strict variety of

rules, regulations, and templates to compete against other universities from around the globe in

diverse competitions. Competitions are held annually in locations all over the world (Michigan,

Ontario, Nebraska, Australia, Brazil, Italy , Germany, etc.) where these design teams are able to bring

their car and compete against some of the best engineering students from across the planet.

Formula SAE offers a unique competition experience where the students aren’t just tested on how

fast their car can maneuver an autocross circuit, but must also compete successfully in a diverse

range of static and dynamic events (Table 1). Each event is worth a specific amount of points. Teams

are awarded points based on their performance in the events. The final event score is determined

from the sum of the awarded points from each event. At the end of the competition, teams are

ranked by their final event score and the winner is crowned.

2019 Goals and Budget

Our Mission in 2019

The goal is to participate at Formula North and finish competitively inside the top 10 among notoriously

successful Formula SAE teams. A top 10 finish with this year’s car will inspire younger generations to pursue

the Automotive Engineering program at the University of Windsor. In addition, interest in the Lancer

Motorsports team will increase. Due to Formula SAE rule stipulations, a brand-new racecar must be built

from the ground up to be eligible for 2019 competition.

2019 Budget

Below is a list of large items that will be purchased or manufactured during the 2019 season for the new

racecar:

• A new engine (Honda CRF450) for competition

• A new frame built as per Formula SAE rules

• 4-Wheel Pushrod/Pullrod Double A-Arm Independent Suspension

• New Powertrain components (Differential, Axles, Transmission, etc.)

• Carbon Fibre Aero Kit and Body (Molds and Materials)
