Digital signatures are used to authenticate the contentsof electronic documents in the same way as a signature

is used to authenticate a document i.e.

Signatures

CoSign uses Public Key Infrastructure(PKI) for generatingdigital signatures. In PKI (asymmetric cryptography) each user

has a key pair, a private key and a public key. As the name

suggest the private key is solely kept by the signer while his

public key is available to all, whosoever want to validate his

signature. The owner of the private key digitally signs electronicinformation, while the holders of the corresponding public key

use it to verify the authenticity of the signature. A cryptographic

function known as hashing is used for both creating and

validating a digital signature.

The hast function-an algorithm uniquely creates a fingerprintwhich is appended to the message which is being sent to the

recipient. In case if any changes are made to the message it will

reflected as corrupted digital signature.

It also authenticates the user be a Certification Authority (CA).
