    WHAT IS SOLAR?

SOLAR PV 101 Presentation by Richard Wilton

Richard Teaches at SAIT a 40 hr course on Solar Installation and also has his own business, Momentum Solar Richard Wilton Presentation:

    o http://poweringalberta.com/publications/ Some Notes:

    - See presentation links and attachment for more information on How to understand Kilowatts etc.. o Read your current power bill to understand KWH etc.. & when it comes to Kilowatts, there are different rates for Commercial and Residential and Commercial get a rebate

kilowatt-hour (kWh) The kilowatt-hour (symbolized kWh) is a unit of energy equivalent to one kilowatt (1 kW) of power expended for one hour (1 h) of time. The kilowatt-hour is not a standard unit in any formal system, but it is commonly used in electrical applications.

o An energy expenditure of 1 kWh represents 3,600,000 joules (3.600 x 106 J). To obtain joules when kilowatt-hours are known, multiply by 3.600 x 106. To obtain kilowatt-hours when joules are known, multiply by 2.778 x 10-7. 3.6 Million Joules (unit) = 1 KWH

    - Economics now support being of the grid

o As prices to install Solar Energy costs have dropped substantially Labor costs more than materials Housing Insurance: need to account for replacement cost on Panels & materials

o Lightening Damage: Richard Wilton saw with lightening, he has seen inverter damaged & not Solar panels - Panels made of Silicone and currently most efficient technology

o Last 30-40 yrs whereas shingles only have 20 yrs or less life expectancy Option with tin roofs, they can clamp the Solar panels on the roof.

o Not recyclable but their use does cut down on coal use, human endangerment of mining for coal, & saves environment more until a technology is produced to recycle, reuse, reduce panels In 4 yrs, Solar will pay for itself & more with less use of fossil fuels

o 12% efficiency of sunlight but efficiency increases in colder weather o 60 Cell is 250 Watts each = Average Home Case o Ie. Average Home: 8 Panels = $10,000 Installed

    - Power Regulations: Require (mandatory) all Energy/Power Companies (ie. Atco etc..) to supply FREE of charge By-Directional Meter on all houses o By-Directional Meters allow for both Solar Power and Coal Power

    - go outside & clears panels & can use a tool to remove snow - Alberta is one of best locations for Solar in the world, more efficiency of panel output the colder weather & Germany has way less sunshine & less land mass & they are leading in Solar Energy...so you can see Canada - Alberta needs to get up to date

LANDMARK GROUP HOMES: Presentation by Kyle http://www.landmarkgroup.ca

    - home builder that installs solar panels too and works with the home owner - Moto: Saving the World One Solar Panel At A Time - Stronger Roofs: A stronger roof lasts much longer and can handle snow much better, not to mention it's ready to receive solar panels should you decide to make your own renewable power. Ask your builder what kind of lumber is used in their beams and trusses. A roof will be much stronger if it's made with engineered lumber, and by a team working in an optimal environment for them to do their best work. In Edmonton, a Landmark Home's roof is 10,440 lbs stronger than any other industry standard new home. In Edmonton, a Landmark Home's strength is unmatched. - Currently 50% of global power comes from coal mining - Solar 23,000TWY all our energy can come from the sun - 160 Billion KWH per year of global power used

o through Solar Energy use we can save from using fossil fuels & environmentally economical o Banff is going Solar

Energy Conservation At the end of the day it's also about energy efficiency & energy savings like shutting lights, use LED lights, power off computers, only use power when needed - saves us from using less coal. People need to practice Energy Conservation everyday

http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/energy-conservation Energy Savings: apply for funding to retrofit all lighting to LED lighting, can cut energy costs significantly

Other Notes: Current energy rates regular power:

    Current AB: 13 cents/KWH Chicago Rates: 26 cents/KWH BC Rates: 10 cents/KWH

Savings when using Solar Energy 0 cents/KWH

Options: If stay on Power Grid, can get rebates from Power Company (they buy energy you dont use)
