Board Repor t

Hi Community

I t ’ s that t ime aga in for an update and some of the th ings that board have been

Directors a ttended the VACCHO members meet ing at Creswick.

Koor i Fami ly Pol ice Protocols Launch: Congratu lat ions to everyone involved .

Chairman spoke at l aunch of the Koori Pol ice Fami ly Violence Protocols Aunty H

Housing update : P lans for the new bui lds are progress ing . The p lans current ly s i t

Nat iona l Reconci l ia t ion Week (NRW): There were lots of d i f ferent organi sat ions

doing morning teas and such throughout NRW. I hope that a l l non -Indigenous

people who attended the var ious events got to l i s ten and share stor ies wi th the

communi ty that at tended and have a l i t t le more understand ing of the ATSI com-

munity and what s ign i f icant mi lestone dates l ike the 67 referendum mean to Ab-

or ig ina l people .

I do f ind i t very d i sappoint ing that not many community members get behind

theses events . There has been a s ign i f icant amount of work being done by Abo-

r ig ina l organisat ions , leaders and mainstream organisat ions with in Horsham and

the surrounding areas to help address the var ious i ssues that our community

face . We now have Reconci l ia t ion p lans with companies l ike Sk i l l invest and p lans

r ig ina l Advisory committee as we l l . Th is i s a pretty s ign i f icant in i t se l f a s i t took

a few of us a long t ime to get a chance to meet and di scuss the Abor ig ina l com-

there a heaps of p lans to involve community through partnership wi th Bareng i

Gadj in Land Counci l , WCMA, GWM Water , and Parks Vic to name a few. As I

sa id a lot of very good th ings are being done but we need communi ty to get be-

hind them and support them.

I be l ieve there has been some misconcept ions about community members hav ing

Deadly Dan Comes to the Wimmera!

Local Indigenous kids from Horsham Primary Schools bumped shoulders with Indigenous

Superhero – Deadly Dan, on Monday evening. Deadly Dan, the smokefree man, travels Aus-

tralia to rid local communities of the harmful effects of smoking and educate children on

the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Goolum Goolum have partnered with VAHS (Victorian Aboriginal Health Service) to devel-

op an online comic book centred on Deadly Dan visiting the Wimmera River and empower-

ing children to live a healthier lifestyle. Susan Sheridan from VAHS Healthy Lifestyle team

said “Deadly Dan is a familiar site in the streets of Melbourne but we wanted him to visit

regional Victoria as well and spread the word on the harms of smoking”.

Dean O’loughlin, Goolum Goolum’s Health & Wellbeing Manager said he was very excited

to have Deadly Dan in town. “We have spent the whole day taking shots and setting scenes

for the forthcoming online comic book. Deadly Dan works very well in Melbourne as an ear-

ly intervention to engage kids in anti-smoking campaigns. Goolum will be launching its own

‘Smokefree’ character this year as part of NAIDOC celebrations in July”.

Goolum Goolum are developing an online interactive IT platform to engage community in

Goolum Healthy Lifestyle programs and connect with services. The online comic, ‘Deadly

Dan visits the Wimmera River’, will be just one of the highlights. “We had amazing success

with our ‘Take the pledge’ campaign in 2016 and we want to build on that this year” Dean

said.

Dean said that Goolum Goolum will continue to work with VAHS on upcoming projects if

they can. “It’s a fantastic partnership. VAHS are very good at promoting better health out-

comes”. “We are hoping Deadly Dan may be able to return in NAIDOC week to introduce

a new local character to assist us to spread the word for a healthier lifestyle for Indigenous

families”.

This year we saw multiple agencies get together to celebrate National Reconciliation Week. 2017 marked two significant mile-stones in Australia’s black history—50 years since the Referen-dum and 25 years since the Mabo decision.

Events were held throughout the week which included smoking ceremonies, dance and Welcome to Country at many events. Thank you to Wimmera PCP for coordinating the calendar for SkillInvest, FedUni, GWM Water, Horsham Rural City Council, Wimmera CMA, DHHS, WimmeraUniting Care, Horsham College and the Department of Education, Horsham Primary School, Cen-tre for Participation and of course Goolum Goolum!

Next stop now is NAIDOC week . A meeting for community members has been scheduled for Thursday 15 June in the Aunty Irene room from 10am. Transport will be available and we are looking for leaders to drive the open-ing for the week as well as the caba-ret. Goolum will lead these 2 events this year. P o w e r ed b y

Some of you may know or have heard that HACC has now transferred to the Common-

wealth government. This means it is no longer funded by the state and it is now funded

by the federal government. Some of the things that we have been working on include

changing documents, the way report, how we refer and policies. As such a lot of the

changes haven't affected direct service delivery.

Some things you need to know if you were a HACC client before July 1st 2016:

State funded HACC transitioned to commonwealth funded CHSP

Anyone over 50 who was a HACC client, before July 1st 2016, is now a CHSP client

Anyone under 50 who was a HACC client, before July 1st 2016, is now a VIC HACC

client

VIC HACC provide very little funding to Goolum, which means you may receive

some service but once the funding is gone you'll need to be referred to get the ser-

vice you need from another provider

New referral process is done through My Aged Care. You can do self-referral or

have someone do it for you e.g. Friend, family, health worker or doctor

Goolum no longer does the assessments, these are done by local council reps or

living at home assessment workers (LAHA) e.g. If you live in Horsham LAHA work-

ers are based at Wimmera Base Hospital and HRCC.

Currently we are still funded for property maintenance, domestic assistance or home

help, allied health and planned activity groups through CHSP and VIC HACC.

I f you would l ike more in format ion on the CHSP please contact John Gorton on 5381 6333.

forget you can always ring to find out if you are due to have your check done

as well.

The health check is done every 9 months as per Medicare policy and you will receive a $25.00 Coles gift voucher on completion of appointment.

Aboriginal Health workers follow up care you require as a result of your

health check. Upon completion of any of these follow up visits you will re-

ceive a $10 voucher- there are a total of 5 follow up visits per year and they

can be done at the clinic or in your home. These follow up visits usually are

only 20 mins long and Health workers will contact you to arrange these vis-

its.

Just a reminder also for everyone to please call and let us know if you can-

not attend any of your appointments as we often have someone on the

waiting list who can fill this time if you are unable to attend. It is also appre-

ciated if people are on time for doctor’s appointments as if not, others have

to wait.

Health staff transport clients to and from health appointments (only for those who are unable to arrange any other transport) so if you do need transport to other appointments please call Medical Reception on 5381-6330.
