PRIORITY PURCHASEt's no secret that our food purchases have a direct impact on our health, but did you know that your choices may also have a far-reaching effect?

Many consumers pay attention to the origins of their food, preferring to choose home-grown products. This type of conscious purchasing has a direct and positive impact on Canadian farmers, beekeepers, and other food-related industries.

Take honey, for example. Recently, many brands have started to blend a foreign supply with a minimum percent-age of Canadian honey. As a result, less honey is required domestically and increasingly, more of it is imported into Canada. That's bad news for local beekeepers who depend on the demand for their product, as well as for the farmers that rely on bees for crop pollination.

But not all Canadian packers are giving in to the blended trend. Guy Chartier, CEO of Bee Maid Honey, notes that this producer-owned co-op has been a part of the Canadian food landscape for over 60 years.

IOur beekeeper owners take great pride in their

ownership, and take extreme care to provide

the best quality honey,” explains Guy Chartier.

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup minced Onion

• 1 Clove Garlic, minced

• 1 tbsp Oil

• 1 can (8 oz.) Tomato Sauce

• 1/2 cup BeeMaid Honey

• 2 tbsp Vinegar

• 2 tbsp minced Parsley

• 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce

• 1/4 tsp Black Pepper

• Pinch Cayenne Pepper

DIRECTIONS

Sauté onion and garlic in oil until softened. Add remaining ingredients and bring mixture to boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.

“We source it all from our owners, and this structure ensures that our honey is of consistent quality year after year, bottle after bottle.”

Canadian honey standards are among the highest in the world, and the country's beekeepers work hard to meet and exceed those standards, Chartier points out. “So not only do companies like Bee Maid Honey support the success of our beekeepers and farmers, but you know that what you're eating meets strict health and safety standards.”

Be sure to read the labels on products the next time you're in a grocery store. It may be the best way for you to support local beekeepers and agriculture - and as barbecue season arrives, do try this delicious recipe featuring Canadian honey:

OTHER THE WORTH OF A HOME can be found in details that

truly define uniqueness- as simple as a centuries old

fireplace that retains the historic permanence of a time

past, or as grand as a rooftop promenade atop a landscape

of city lights. So, to us, it’s not about the size of the

property, the number of bedrooms, or even the price,

but more about the distinct character that makes a

home worthy of being called exceptional.

This is our world.

Because the worth of a home is defined in its details.

TODAY, enlightened travellers often say they want to go on vacation, but sense that the total experience should not be all about them. Reaching out to the world is also about generating positive results for the greater good.

This is exactly what prompted three adventurous women to travel to Peru on an off the beaten track expedition to Machu Picchu. They went with the help of Charity Challenge, a tour operator dedicated to benefiting charities, as well as giving help to the local communities where their travellers go. The tour operator has a unique and carefully planned program for trips to nearly 12 countries. You can trek, cycle, climb, or ski throughout the world with the organization, while raising vital funds for a charity you love.

“We all had to sign a paper agreeing not to use any environmentally damaging products etc. They also hire local people for the trek from the cooks to the guides. Some of the money they get from the participants is donated to needy causes. Our Guide and his people were fantastic on the trek and in Cusco, they helped us whenever we needed things like hotel advice and changing money.”

You too can go on many adventures that include raising money for a charity and giving back to the local communities you visit. For example, the leading human rights organization, Amnesty International, is just one of many charities that benefit from these exciting tours. It was the BEST thing I did in a long time,”says GERHILD NEUGEBAUER

from British Columbia.

“First of all it was just so well organized and the participants all had the same goal; making people aware of the charity of their choice and its purpose … Some of my friends offered to sponsor me without me having to ask for a donation because they wanted to be part of the adventure.” Neugebauer also pointed out that Charity Challenge is environmentally conscious.
