The JUNIFOL Range

JUNIFOL HDPE is a durable, geosynthetic barrier made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). It is produced from a specially formulated, proprietary virgin polyethylene resin designed specifically for geomembrane applications, and offers robust, durable performance. JUNIFOL HDPE is manufactured in two basic roll widths - 5.1m and 8.0m, and is available in thicknesses ranging from 0.6mm - 3.0mm.

JUNIFOL LLDPE is a geosynthetic barrier made of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), offering enhanced flexibility and elongation, and improved installation characteristics. It is manufactured in two basic roll widths - 5.1m and 8.0m, and is available in thicknesses ranging from 0.75mm - 2.0mm.

JUNIFOL membranes are available with three types of surface finish - both sides smooth, one side smooth/one side sanded, or two sides sanded. In addition, the product can be manufactured as a mono-layer membrane, or alternatively as a co-extruded multi-layer sheet. The standard colour for JUNIFOL membranes is black, although various other colours can be produced upon request.

Quality & Performance

JUNIFOL membranes have outstanding chemical resistance, mechanical properties, environmental stress crack resistance, dimensional stability and thermal ageing characteristics. They also have excellent resistance to UV radiation and in some cases can be used for exposed applications.

In order to achieve a consistently high level of quality and reliability, JUTA implements a rigorous quality assurance programme across the entire manufacturing processes of its products. This begins with strict raw material quality control, and continues throughout the course of manufacturing, where every roll is thoroughly monitored and checked to eliminate mechanical defects and ensure a consistent thickness across the whole width of the roll. The last stage of quality control covers finished products. Each product is tested in accordance with specific characteristics and parameters relevant to its performance requirements.

Installation

JUNIFOL membranes can be installed using a variety of seaming techniques, including hot wedge, combi-wedge and hot gas welding processes. For details, openings, spots with complicated access, repair jobs, patches and shorter seams, an extrusion-welding method is typically implemented using a welding rod.

Formed joints are testable by destructive and non-destructive techniques to ensure that a 100% seal has been achieved. It is also recommended that a geotextile protection layer is used to prevent puncture of the membrane from any unforeseen sharp objects.

The Highest Accreditations

The manufacturing plants producing JUNIFOL membranes have been certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 a OHSAS 18001. These factories are regularly audited by accredited external institutes to ensure that the highest standards are adhered to.

Furthermore, JUNIFOL membranes have been manufactured in accordance with numerous national quality management systems, including BAM, ÖNORM S 2073, ASQUAL, KIWA, BECETEL and DIBt. The product’s characteristics also fulfil the requirements of GRI-GM13 and GRI-GM17 quality standards.

GAS BARRIERSJUTA GP1 & GP2

As demand for housing continues to increase, so does the pressure to develop on brownfield and other potentially dangerous land. Any buildings constructed on or near gas contaminated land face a genuine risk of hazardous gases penetrating up through the floor.

If not allowed to escape, these gases can build-up and concentrate to either asphyxiating or even explosive levels, causing a significant health and safety risk. The 1991 Building Regulation C2 requires that the occupants of buildings should be protected from the effects of gaseous contamination in the ground. Importantly, the choice of membrane should not only be down to its gas permeability, it should also be selected according to its ability to withstand the construction process.

JUTA’s GP1 and GP2 membranes comply with all of the latest guidance on the use of gas resistant membranes. They are BBA Certified for use in a range of situations,

Product Characteristics

JUTA GP1 & GP2 are high quality gas barriers manufactured from low density reinforced polyethylene (LDPE). They are ideal for use on sites with ground contamination from radon, carbon dioxide and methane gases. In addition, JUTA GP1 incorporates an aluminium foil core, offering protection against hydrocarbon vapours where it is separated from the ground e.g. above a block and beam floor.

Both membranes are printed with their logo, along with cautionary advice that ‘all non-essential personnel should keep off ’.

These high performance membranes are manufactured by using a multi-layer extrusion/coating process, and incorporate a tough polypropylene reinforcement grid. The membranes are extremely flexible for ease of installation and are robust enough to cope with site conditions. JUTA GP1 & GP2 will also protect against damp and therefore will act as a DPM and satisfy Approved Document C.

JUTA’s gas membranes are manufactured in accordance with a strict quality assurance programme. Its factories are regularly audited by accredited external institutes and have been certified according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

UsageJuta GP 1 can be used on any site where carbon dioxide, methane, radon, hydrocarbon or VOC vapours are present (subject to slab conditions) up to and including CIRIA 665 Situation 6. Juta GP 2 can be used on any site where low levels of carbon dioxide, methane and radon are present up to and including CIRIA 665 Situation 2. Both membranes are sufficiently resistant to the ingress of harmful gases into a building, although on more heavily contaminated sites a passive or active venting system may be required to dilute the gases down to acceptable levels. Specific design advice can be provided by JUTA.

InstallationJUTA GP1 & GP2 systems should be installed in accordance with the recommendations of the Building Research Establishment, CIRIA and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. They should also be laid strictly in adherence with JUTA’s guidelines, full details of which can be found on the dedicated product data sheets.

GP1 & GP2 membranes should be installed on a sand blinding layer, geotextile protection fleece or smooth concrete float finish. In order to provide a continuous barrier across the cavity, the membrane should be taken through the blockwork and incorporated below the damp proof course cavity tray in the outer leaf.

Jointing & SealingJUTA GP1 & GP2 can be tape jointed or heat welded. JUTA recommends that any heat welding is carried out by a Construction Skills NVQ Level 2 qualified installer (or equivalent). The membranes should be overlapped by at least 100mm and care should be taken to ensure a seal between the joint. If taping

joints, use JUTA Butyl Tape, and a 40mm silicone roller should be used to remove any trapped air. JUTA Pre-formed Details or JUTA Self Adhesive Gas Membrane must be used for sealing service entry pipes.

VentingJUTA gas membranes can be used on sites where passive or active ventilation is necessary. JUTA GP Void Vent should be used in conjunction with the relative vent connectors where required.
