Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Today we welcome the players, management, official and supporters of Fort William to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League match. Firstly I have to congratulate everyone at Fort William for their fantastic result last week down at Preston Athletic. It was their first ever Scottish Cup victory so I am sure the bus journey home was less than quiet! Last weekend we had a decent result ourselves with the 3-2 victory over Dalbeattie Star. It was nerve-racking in the second half after they scored twice in as many minutes early in the second half but we got through in the end. The draw on Thursday wasn’t overly kind with a trip to Turriff United in the 2nd Round. It is always good to avoid the SHFL teams but we can’t complain too much. At least we know that for the same reason Turriff United won’t be too happy with the draw either. The main thing is that we are in the competition and we know the opposition well so no need for a spying mission. Especially as we are there on Wednesday. On an unhappier note it was sad to learn of the passing of Graeme Hadden who died last week. He was affectionately known in the front of the stand as the

Happy Haddock and was never short of a word or even a piece of advice. Graeme was an avid Broch fan and very rarely missed a game when he was at home from the sea. He will certainly be missed around the grounds of the Highland League. We have a busy week coming up with the midweek match at Turriff United on Wednesday and then the Aberdeenshire Cup Final on the Saturday. Firstly we will need to concentrate on the match today and fingers crossed the points remain in the Broch come the full time whistle. Come awa the Broch Finlay

Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Last week's game against Dalbeattie Star in the Scottish Cup must have been one where the emotions were a bit like a roller coaster. How did you see things and do you think there was a bit of complacency in the second half? We played well in the first half and deservedly went in front. 3-0 was a fair result at half time as I felt we were in total control. Marc Lawrence got himself a couple of goals again and is starting to find his feet in this league. Second half for whatever reason we didn't turn up. We stopped battling and pressing them and allowed them back in to the game. We should have been able to press on and get a couple more goals instead of holding on like we did. But the cup is all about the result and progressing in to the next round which we have so we now have Turriff United away in round 2 which will be a very tough tie. Moving onto to today's game Fort William will be on a high after their excellent victory in the Scottish Cup against Preston Athletic. What danger will Ally Ewen's side pose? Fort William have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years and credit to them. They have turned themselves in to a good side who are difficult to beat. They managed to score 3 goals against Brora the other week and I don't think many teams can say that. Their main threat is the boy McLeod who is bang on form and scoring plenty goals. We will have to be in our toes with him around. Like every other game we must be at our best to win

Looking a little ahead you have a very busy schedule coming up with midweek League matches against Turriff United and Huntly either side of the Aberdeenshire Cup Final against Inverurie Loco Works. How much will that stretch your young squad? With such a hectic period there is little doubt that we pick up the odd bump and bruise here and there. We will just have to manage each player individually and make sure everyone is treated where need be. I have a good squad where players who haven't had much of a chance will more than likely be involved at some point over the next 4 games that said you would rather play than train so we will prepare for each game carefully and try and manage the players so we have everyone in good shape All the best, Mark.

Today’s visiTors – Fort William fc Full Name: Fort William FC Nickname: The Fort Founded: 1974 Ground: Claggan Park, Fort William Club Colours: Home Kit – Amber Shirts, Black Shorts & Amber Socks. Capacity: 1,800 (seated 140) Chairman: Ronnie MacLean Manager: Ally Ewen League: Scottish Highland Football League A Brief History Fort William Football Club was established in 1974 and gained entry to the Scottish Highland League for the 1985/86 season. Fort William F. C. is the only team in the Scottish Highland League from the West Highlands of Scotland. Fort William F.C. draws its players from Lochaber, Skye, Oban, Inverness and Speyside with matches and training taking place at Claggan Park, Fort William. Claggan Park, which is leased from Highland Council, has two enclosed stands accommodating up to 140 spectators, and is regarded by many as one of the most scenic grounds of all clubs in the Highland League. Our Social Club is situated adjacent to Claggan Park and is open to members and their guests on match days. I first became involved with the Club in May 2012 and was elected Chairperson at the AGM in May 2013. At the AGM in May 2013 some prominent local business people also joined the Club Committee, and they, along with myself and Mike Maceachen, the team coach, have now become Directors of the new Fort William Football Club C.I.C. As well as their considerable business acumen and contacts, these new Directors have transformed the corporate management of the club – and invested some of their own money – so that the Club is now on a better financial footing and starting to be able to bring in new playing staff to bolster the squad. In addition to the Board of Directors there is a hard working Management Committee who run the day to day administration of the club. The effects of the transformation will not happen overnight, but we would love to see more supporters come to our matches to see what we have already done and where we hope to take the Club. The players really need your support and encouragement to help them achieve better results. Having a team in the Scottish Highland League is something that everyone in Fort William and Lochaber should be really proud of. We look forward to welcoming you to Claggan Park. Ronnie Maclean, Fort William Football Club Chairperson

FFc strips welcomed in uganda

Fraserburgh FC’s kit has found its way to Uganda thanks to the Assembly of God in Fraserburgh

“We are delighted that our old playing kit has gone to good use and it is quite humbling to think of something that we have basically thrown away has given so much pleasure to someone else.” Derek Watt of the AOG said, “In 2009 the first team of 10 of us visited Kampala Uganda Africa after listening to the Watoto children's choir singing at AOG central Fraserburgh. We felt called to build a home for the Orphaned and abandoned children that Watoto were looking after. This was the start of what has now been 5 trips to Uganda where a house, classroom, teachers Accommodation block, children's church and the latest Worship Academy have been built or funded. “Excellence" is imprinted upon everything Watoto does and during a visit to their Sustainability Farm we learned they had a Football team. Now upon meeting the team we discovered they had no kit and the football they were using was just a joke. Deciding to help out we got a collection together and bought Uganda football tops from the local market to give them a sense of excellence and team spirit we also gave them some Footballs. But during preparing for this 2015 trip Andrew was gifted the FFC kits and he knew exactly where to distribute these at. We had the great pleasure of providing the Watoto Farm team with a complete kit they now had new tops, shorts and socks something they never had. It’s something we take for granted we play the game discard the kits and replace them when we need to but to these guys you would think we had given them the world. Football is loved all over the world and to be able to let these guys look like a team and have the footballs to train like a team was a great thing to be able to do. We cannot Thank FFC enough for the kit that brought such smiles to guys that I suppose dream like we all did of being the next Ronaldo or Messi. At least with the new kits they are a step closer.

Saturday 19th September 2015 Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Buckie Thistle 4-3 Huntly Buckie Thistle came from behind on to defeat Huntly in a seven-goal thriller, thanks mainly to a hat-trick from Kevin Fraser. Fraser put Buckie ahead with the opening goal in the 19th minute and 10 minutes later the Jags striker grabbed his second of the afternoon with a deflected shot. Iain Cruickshank pulled one back for the visitors shortly afterwards and just before the break he struck again to level things up at half-time. The Huntly comeback continued seven minutes into the second half, striker Dean Donaldson firing home to put them ahead for the first time in the match. Five minutes later it was all square once again when Shaun Carroll slotted home from the penalty spot. More drama was yet to come and Chris Hegarty saw his penalty saved by Fraser Hobday in the 84th minute, only for Fraser to complete his hat-trick in injury time and snatch victory for the home side. Formartine United 1-0 Fraserburgh A late winner from substitute Cammy Keith secured a vital three points for title-challenging Formartine, as boss Kris Hunter put one over his former charges Fraserburgh. A first half of few chances saw Neil Gauld volley just wide early on and Graeme Rodger’s header well saved by Paul Leask. Craig McKeown produced another excellent stop from Leask in the 54th minute with a superb side-foot effort. Broch missed the best chance of the match in the 66th minute, Steven Davidson somehow managing to fire straight at Andy Reid from only two yards out. Formartine won it three minutes from time when Rodger put substitute Keith through on goal and he slotted past Leask despite the best efforts of Russell McBride on the line. Fort William 3-5 Brora Rangers A hat-trick from Paul Brindle inspired Brora to victory at Claggan Park, in an eight-goal thriller. Brora started well and Brindle fired home the opener in the eighth minute after a long ball was flicked on by Steven Mackay. A cross from Zander Sutherland was headed back across goal by Mackay and Brindle headed home at the far post for his and Brora’s second on 22 minutes. The visitors went three up three minutes from the break, when an unmarked Mackay headed home from eight yards. Fort fought their way back into the match with two excellent strikes from John McLeod. A great ball in from Danny Macintosh picked out McLeod and he sent a superb header from 15 yards looping over Malin in the 50th minute. Shortly afterwards, McLeod gathered the ball 40 yards out, ran forward and sent a 25-yarad screamer beyond Malin. Ten minutes later a cross from Brindle evaded everyone and went straight into the far corner to restore Brora’s two-goal lead. Sutherland’s corner was then headed in by Grant Munro for number five. McLeod wasn’t done yet and he crashed a drive home from 18 yards in the 90th minute to complete his own treble and there was still time for him to see his penalty saved by Malin in injury-time.

Lossiemouth 0-2 Forres Mechanics Forres scored a comfortable win over Lossiemouth at Grant Park, with a goal in each half from striker Liam Baxter. The visitors went ahead in the seventh minute with their first chance of the game. A poor headed clearance fell to Liam Baxter and he smashed the ball low into the net. Ryan Green missed a good chance to level when he dragged his shot wide after good work from Tony Ross and Joao Rodrigues in the 25th minute. Forres keeper Stuart Knight saved well from Shawn Scott before the break and it remained 1-0 to the visitors at half-time. Lee Fraser almost found his own net with a mistimed header that went just past the post. Forres sealed the win when McGovern played Baxter through and he chipped Darren McConnachie for his and the visitors' second goal. Turriff United 6-1 Keith Nick Gray’s hat-trick helped Turriff earn a thumping win over Keith. United keeper Kevin Main saved a penalty from Kris Duncan early on and Gray opened the scoring just before the break, having latched on to a pass from Aaron McKenna. Cammy Bowden powered in a header on the hour mark, then Gray completed his hat-trick with two goals in the space of nine minutes. Allen MacKenzie got on the end of a cross from Andrew MacAskill to score Turriff’s fifth goal of the game and although Matthew McDonald hit a consolation for Keith, MacKenzie had the final say with a blistering strike. Rothes 1-3 Strathspey Thistle Josh Peters hit a double as Strathspey won at Rothes. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Peters cut inside from the right-hand side and his shot flew through the legs of Matthew Mackie. Strathspey doubled their lead early in the second half after Rothes only managed to clear a corner to the edge of the box and Jordan Wardrope fired in a low drive. The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Mateusz Bobrowski was sent off following his second caution and shortly afterwards, Peters rounded Mackie to score. Liam Paterson pulled a goal back late on for Rothes with a neat finish following a corner. Nairn County 4-3 Clachnacuddin A hat-trick from talisman Conor Gethins gave Nairn a win over Clach at Station Park. The opening goal came in the 24th minute when Gregg Main hit the crossbar and Gethins was on hand head home. It was 2-0 just three minutes later, Robbie Duncanson finding Alan Pollock and he placed his shot in the bottom right-hand corner. Clach pulled one back when Michael Morrison headed past his own goalkeeper and soon afterwards they levelled through Blair Lawrie's superb chip. The visitors completed the turnaround in the 63rd minute, substitute Colin Maclean slotting the ball home from the penalty spot to put them in front. Nairn levelled again from another penalty, Gethins blasting home the equaliser eight minutes from time and he completed his hat-trick from the spot after Calum Macdonald's hand ball to snatch all three points for the Wee County.

Wick Academy 0-1 Cove Rangers Cove maintained their 100% record in the Highland League by edging out Wick. The hosts threatened in the 25th minute when Steven Anderson Harrison’s shot was well saved by Stuart McKenzie. Connor Scully then came close to scoring for Cove, only to see his effort cleared off the Wick goal-line by Grant Steven. The only goal of the game arrived in the 70th minute when Scully latched on to a throw-in from Harry Milne to score. William Hill Scottish Cup First Round Replay Whitehill Welfare v Wick Academy Wick make the long trip to Midlothian after the Lowland League side grabbed an injury time equaliser at Harmsworth Park last weekend. The visitors would face another cup tie against Nairn County in the Second Round if they can win the replay at Ferguson Park. Prediction: Away Win Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League Brora Rangers v Turriff United Brora host Turriff at Dudgeon Pak in a top of the table clash, with only one point and one place separating the two sides in the league table. Brora have a full squad to choose from, while Turriff travel without Stuart Cumming, James Chalmers, Chris Herd and Kenny Mair. Prediction: Score Draw Clach v Formartine United Clach take on table-toppers Formartine at Grant Street, full of confidence after their crushing win at Deveronvale in the cup. They will be missing Jamie Doran who has returned to Ireland, while Calum Macdonald, Martin Callum and Ian Penwright are all unavailable. Gordon Morrison and Colin Maclean return to the squad. Formartine could hand a debut to new signing Jamie Masson, the former Dons midfielder joining the club this week on a short-term deal. Prediction: Score Draw Cove Rangers v Nairn County Cove have a 100 percent record in the league to protect against Nairn at North Lodge Park. Daniel Park and Roy McBain are back in the squad, but Dean Lawrie is unavailable. Nairn recorded an excellent cup win over Selkirk last week and will hope to continue that form tomorrow. Gregg Main and Calum Antell are out through suspension for this one. Forres Mechanics v Rothes Home side Forres have Duncan Jones and Aaron Mclellan unavailable for the visit of Rothes. Scott Moore and Stuart Soane return to the squad and Chris Blackett could be involved after joining on loan from Caley Thistle. Simon Allan will have a late fitness test. Rothes will be without Mateusz Brobowski through suspension in their first outing since the resignation of Co-Managers Paul Lamberton and Willie Duncan. Committee members Russell Anderson and Derek Thomson take charge for the trip to Mosset Park. Prediction: Home Win Inverurie Loco Works v Lossiemouth Locos are in fine form, scoring nine goals in away wins at Keith and Deveronvale in their last two outings. Mark Souter is suspended for the home clash with Lossiemouth. The Coasters are without Tony Ross, Shawn Scott and Ryan Green through injury, while Willie Mathers and Kevin Duguid are offshore. Prediction: Home Win Keith v Huntly Keith have a doubt over Greg Smith for the visit of local rivals Huntly, as they look to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Locos in the cup. Huntly’s Murray McCulloch is also doubtful after taking a knock on Wednesday, while Neale Davidson and Thomas Johnstone remain out. John Urquhart returns to the squad after being on holiday. Prediction: Away Win Strathspey Thistle v Buckie Thistle Jordan Wardrope is Strathspey’s only absentee as they look to bounce back to form at home to Buckie. Buckie have won 8 of their last 9 matches and still have Andy Burr, Andy Low and Kai Ross out injured. Sean Carroll comes back into the squad. Prediction: Away Win

Fraserburgh FC Supporters Club News We welcome everyone involved with Fort William to the Bellslea for today’s Highland League match. All at the supporters club were saddened by the sudden death of Graeme Hadden last week. Graeme was a regular both home and away with the Broch when he was at home from sea and will be greatly missed. We would like to express our condolences to his family and friends. He may be gone now but the “Happy Haddock” will never to be forgotten. Fort will be full of confidence after their fine 3 – 2 win away from home to Preston Athletic last week in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup. Fort William sit in 17th place in the league with 6 points from 10 matches played. In the corresponding fixture from last season the Broch won the game by three goals to nil, Scott Barbour grabbed 2 goals and William West the other. Last Saturday we won at home in a nail biting finish to Dalbeattie Star in the 1st round of the Scottish Cup. After scoring 3 unanswered goals in the 1st half of the game we looked as though we were on easy street, but the Star scored two early goals in the second half and we were unable to convert any of our chances. Let’s hope that both Fort and ourselves have a favourable draw in the 2nd round of the competition. We will be running a supporters bus to the Turriff game this Wednesday 7th of October which will leave from the Elizabethan Bar at 6:45pm. Bus prices are £8 for adults and £5 for others. We will also be running a supporters bus to the Aberdeenshire Cup Final on Saturday the10th October which will leave from the Elizabethan Bar at 12:30pm. Entry to the bus will be by ticket only and they will be on sale at today’s game, bus prices are £10 for adults and £5 for others. We hope to attract new members to the supporters club as we have kept our membership and bus prices at the same cost as last year. Non members are also very welcome to travel to games but they will have to pay an extra £2. The hospitality raffle has been selling well and it will be drawn towards the end of the year. Tickets are on sale costing £2 a ticket with two winners enjoying some refreshments at a home game of their choice. Our bus info page will tell you the cost and times of bus travel, we leave for home right after the final whistle. The back pages showed there was still much uncertainty at the start of the 1963/64 season as to whether or not the Broch would continue. The Herald wrote “What’s a Town without a Team?” Just round the corner there came a saviour. Mr Peter Cameron, an Aberdeen businessman, was ready to back the Broch. Suddenly things didn’t look so bad. A couple of big names arrived, Tommy Ring (ex Clyde), Jimmy Milne (signed from Forfar and was with Hearts for a while) and Johnny Allen ex Dunfermline and Aberdeen. Has the dark clouds lifted enough for the Broch to turn the corner? Another team was elected to the Highland League, Brora Rangers from the far north of Scotland. With the Bellslea getting a makeover, we waited in anticipation for the start of the season. A 6-1 win in a friendly v Banks O’ Dee was a good start. The Broch team that day was: Stephen, Russell, MacLean, Brown, Milne, Smith, Allen, McDonald, Ingram, Christie, Ring. This whetted the fans appetite and the following Wednesday the Broch put 9 past the Toolies with Allen scoring 4, Ring (2), Summers (2) and Brown. On Saturday August 10th we played at home to Huntly in the League Cup. The queue to get into the Bellslea stretched along to the corner of the street, something that hadn’t been seen for a long time. The game started in sensational style. Young of Huntly hit the byline and crossed to Christie who flashed the ball past Thom to put Huntly 1-0 ahead in just 30 seconds. A Ring free-kick resulted in the Broch’s Christie heading home to make it 1-1. Allen made it 2-1 for the Broch on 27 minutes but Byers equalised for Huntly on the stroke of half time. There was no more scoring and the game ended 2-2. The attendance was estimated at nearly 2,000 proving that if there was a competitive team the crowds would come out. A 4-0 defeat at Peterhead followed with Billy Weir hitting a hat-trick. The next outing was a 3-1 home win against the Vale with Ewen grabbing a hat-trick. The reverse fixture saw the Broch win 3-2 at Banff with new signing George Kelly netting twice and James Ingram also on the scoresheet. The group finished though with a 5-0 drubbing at Huntly quickly followed by a 4-1 home defeat to local rivals Peterhead saw the Broch eliminated from the competition and Allen’s goals was just a consolation. It was back to League business. I though that the days of getting a tanking were past but the scoreline from Clach came through saying the Broch had lost 8-2!! Had the bubble burst? With a home tie the following week against Peterhead in the 1st Round of the Qualifying Cup it was a must win game to kick start the season. The match was played on 7th September and Peterhead took the game to the Broch and were 3-0 up after half an hour. The Broch looked dead and buried but Allen reduced the leeway before half time to give the home side hope. Kelly made it 3-2 on 48 minutes and they Broch were awarded a penalty on 73 minutes from which Meldrum gave Wood no chance. The Broch’s tails were up now and it was no surprise when Beattie gave the home side the lead on 80 minutes. It stayed that way and the Bellslea erupted with strains of come awa the Burgh. It had been a long time since the fans had invaded the pitch at the Bellslea. The next round saw a visit to Rothes and Kelly gave the visitors the lead on 31 minutes with Allen tapping into an empty net on 70 minutes to make it 2-0. Despite a late consolation the Broch had qualified for the quarter finals where they were drawn away to Brora.

Appearances: 59; Goals: 10 Peter Alexander Bruce, Forward, Age 25: P-A signed for the Broch on a permanent basis from Peterhead FC at the start of 2013/14 season having had several loan spells with the club. He is a tricky player, with two good feet and plenty of pace. He has a great shot on him and has found the net 38 times including the winner in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final last season. Appearances: 96; Goals: 38 Steven Davidson, Forward, Age 20: Steven actually made his debut against Nairn four seasons ago scoring in that game. He was farmed out to the Juniors to continue his development. Scored eight times last season from 27 appearances, he is good in the air and has a great shot on him as he has demonstrated notching several important goals. Appearances: 63; Goals: 12 Aidan Combe, Forward, Age 18: Joined the club last summer having previously played for Keith at under 17 level. It was during a match against the Broch where he came to the Broch’s attention with his attacking wing play and pace causing all sorts of problems for the Bellslea side. Scored his first goal for the club at Keith last April. Appearances: 26; Goals: 1 Jordi Walker, Forward, Age 18: Jordi made his debut as a substitute in the match against Deveronvale at Bellslea Park last season. He has earned this on the back of some impressive performances in the Aberdeenshire League and will look to push for a more regular first team slot. Appearances: 9; Goals: 0 Mark Cowie, Manager, Age 30: Mark took over as manager of the Broch when Kris Hunter decided to move to pastures new in April. His experience and calmness from his playing days will be of great assistance to the younger members of the playing squad. He is sure to bring fresh ideas to the team whilst staying true to the club’s philosophy of bringing through young talent. Appearances: 242; Goals: 25 Mark is ably assisted by James Duthie who has a wealth of experience at Highland League level, Alex Mair who has been on the Broch’s coaching staff for several years now and new faces Steve Doak goalkeeping coach, Brent Bruce fitness coach, Ross Cardno club physio and Leanne Reid assistant physio. There are also two community coaches Shelley Sutherland & Graeme Noble who play a tremendous role with the young age groups.

Dalbeattie Star match report

William Hill Scottish Cup 1st Round Saturday 26th September 2015 Fraserburgh v Dalbeattie Star, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh Fraserburgh forced the first chance of the game when the ball broke to John Chalmers after Willie West’s shot was blocked but the young midfielders effort went well over the bar. Dalbeattie then created a chance when Greig Thorburn’s cross was headed over by Craig Fergusson. Tommy Muir then got clear of the Broch defence and found Lewis Sloan who crossed into the box for Justin Nicholl but he headed wide from a good position. On 10 minutes Ryan Cowie received a pass from his brother Dean and hammered in a shot from distance which went just wide. A dangerous cross into the middle by Graham Johnston went a begging as Willie West just failed to get on the end of the ball. The Broch took the lead on 19 minutes when Richard Maxwell handled a cross from Ryan Cowie in his box and Graham Johnston stepped up to hammer the ball into the bottom right corner past Darren Martin. A few minutes later a long free kick by Ryan Christie found West in the box but his header was saved by Martin. The Broch doubled their lead after 34 minutes after a period of pressure. Johnston’s effort was parried before Ryan Cowie saw his follow up blocked and Grant Noble then had his shot tipped over the bar for a corner. The kick to the back post by Ryan Cowie was headed home by Marc Lawrence for his second goal since joining on loan from Peterhead. The lead was increased to 3-0 on 37 minutes although it could have been so different after a stramash in the Broch penalty area somehow saw the ball ricochet off the bar to safety. The clearance fell to Grant Noble who fed Johnston and his cut back to the edge of the box found Lawrence who swept home his second of the match. The visitors must have felt hard done by after giving so much to get back into the game and they had one final chance in the first half when a mistake in the Broch defence saw James McHarrie set up Tommy Muir but his effort went side of the post. Half Time: Fraserburgh 3 Dalbeattie 0

The second half started with the Dalbeattie trying to get back into the game and James McHarrie crossed from the left into the six yard box to Tommy Muir but he couldn’t hit the target. A minute later the ball broke for Craig Neill but his shot cracked against the post and went wide of the goal. Star were doing all the pressing and another good chance passed by when a free kick by Justin Nicholl was cleared to James McHarrie but he shot wide. The Broch’s attacks were becoming sporadic but a good move between Ryan Cowie and Willie West released Graham Johnston on the left and he cut inside his marker and curled a shot just wide of the post. A minute later the Broch had another chance when Scott Cowe’s long clearance fell to West but the Dalbeattie keeper blocked. On 60 minutes Dalbeattie got back into the game when Noble gave away a free kick on the edge of the box and Lewis Sloan curled home a beauty from 20 yards. Three minutes later it was 3-2 when a ball down the right wing found James McHarrie who shot at Cowe and despite initially saving the effort the ball squirmed away from him and into the net. Dalbeattie were searching for an equaliser and Cowe had to be sharp to save from Justin Nicholl with McHarrie failing to capitalize from the rebound. Marc Dickson then crashed a shot off the woodwork at the other end before Cowe saved well from Thorburn. Full Time: Fraserburgh 3 Dalbeattie Star 2 Fraserburgh: Scott Cowe, Stuart Taylor, Russell McBride, Ryan Cowie, Ryan Christie, Dean Cowie, John Chalmers, Willie West, Marc Lawrence (Courtney Cooper 66), Graham Johnston, Grant Noble (Marc Dickson 66). What a journey this would be at that time the bus would leave at 6am!! There was no Kessock Bridge in those days, just straight up the Struie and keep going. It was worse if you were up there in early December as no floodlights meant a 2 0’clock kick off!! The match was played on 5th October and the Broch took the lead from John Kane’s strike on 30 minutes and he added a second, Doshie Noble who had sustained an injury but kept playing got a third and John Allan added a fourth for the Broch. McRae scored a consolation for Brora late on but the Broch had triumphed 4-1 which meant a place in the Scottish Cup with the dream of a tie against Rangers or Hibs to come. It was back down to earth the following Saturday though as the Burgh lost 4-1 at home to Caley. The team knew they would have to buck up their ideas in the semi final which would be at home to Forres mechanics on Saturday 19th October. The game was also to be televised although in those days it was black and white. Forres’ strip was all white with a yellow and chocolate hoop on the shirts. The teams were: Broch Curran, Russell, Carroll, Brown, Milne, Smith, Davidson, Fowler, Allan, Kane, Meldrum. Forres: McDonald, Cochill, Noble, McIvor, Nisbet, Main, Shaw, Beveridge, Cormie, Roy, Dingwall. Referee – Mr J P Barclay (Kirkcaldy). Forres won the toss and elected to kick into a stiff breeze. The Broch kicked too many long balls which the wind simply caught and went out for goal kicks. Tragedy struck the Broch after 7 minutes when a Russell pass back slipped past Curran’s reach and rolled into the net to make it 1-0 to Forres. On 18 minutes Dingwall doubled Forres’ lead but Allan pulled one back on 26 minutes and Meldrum hit the net to make it 2-2 at half time. Roy put Forres 3-2 up on the hour mark but Allan restored parity on 70 minutes for the Broch. Shaw scored on 73 minutes for Forres to settle the tie with the final score in a pulsating game Broch 3 Forres Mechanics 4. The Can Cans went on to lift the trophy by beating Buckie Thistle 8-4 over two legs. A season ticket at the Bellslea at that time cost £2.5/-. You’re lucky if you get a pint these days for that money. The amateur league was also in full swing. Sandhaven topped the league with Pittulie, Toolies, Lads Club, Inver St Cairn chasing, with a new up and coming side, while St Modans were making heavy weather of it. One score was Pittulie 10 St Modans 3 with a young George Malley scoring. There weren’t many young teams willing to have a go in the amateur league but St Modans developed into a household name in the local game. A string of their players progressed to play for the Broch – George Malley, Nigel Hunter, Davie Anderson, Robbie McDonald to name but a few. Back to league business and after a 3-2 win over Buckie Thistle with Kane grabbing a couple and Brown also scoring the Broch got ready for the visit of new boys Brora to the Bellslea on 2nd November. The pace of the game was too much for Brora. Broch went 1-0 up after 21 minutes, Allan added his second on 30 minutes to put the Broch 2-0 up and Kane made it 3-0 after 38 minutes. Ingram completed the first half scoring with a goal 5 minutes before the break. The Broch eased off during the second half and Reid pulled a goal back for the visitors to make the final score Broch 4 Brora 1. The Scottish Cup draw was made and the Broch were drawn away to Jock Stein’s Dunfermline Athletic side what a tie!!

The following week Broch fans were greeted with the headline “Broch sign ex Celtic star Fernie”. He lined up against Keith on Saturday 7th December and despite putting through his own goal Allan scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 win for the Black and Whites. Fernie only stayed on for a couple of games as he was looking for a managerial job. The Following week it was the return fixture at Keith. The Broch won 1-0 thanks to a goal from George Noble. The Broch lost their next 4 games though including a 6-1 reverse at home to Nairn before the Scottish Cup tie loomed at East End Park. On Saturday 25th January 1964 the Broch set off for Dunfermline. The teams were – Dunfermline: Herriott, W. Callaghan, Lunn, Smith, McLean, Miller, Wilson, Peebles, Dickson, Kerry, T. Callaghan. Broch: Curran, McCann, Forrest, Bruce, Milne, Carroll, Davidson, Kane, Allan, Fowler, Ewan. As everyone suspected the Broch were on a hiding to nothing. The final score was 7-0, with Dickson (5), Kerry and Peebles scoring. Brian McCann was a shock choice at right back as he had been out injured for a few weeks. Since both teams played in black and white a change of strip was required. As the Broch didn’t have a second kit they played in the Toolies kit, white shirts with a blue collar and blue shorts. After the game it was decided that the club would adopt an all local policy (seems familiar) with eleven players being put up for sale including Tommy Ring and George Kelly. The next game was a home to Keith in the Aberdeenshire Cup. This saw a 3-2 win for the Broch with Allan scoring twice and Ewen netting as well. A home tie against Deveronvale followed in the semi finals. With six home grown players in the team there seemed to be a bit more fight. On 25 minutes the Vale took the lead when Curran kicked a clearance against McDonald and the ball rebounded into the net. Allan salvaged the tie for the Broch though with a penalty. The replay started in sensational fashion with Vale taking the lead after 30 seconds. Forsyth equalised after 16 minutes and Eddie Noble scored a tremendous solo goal going on a mazy run and beating three defenders before crashing the ball into the net to put the Broch in the final. Allan scored another hat-trick in the 4-1 win against Rothes to set things up nicely for the re-arranged game against Peterhead. However the weather took its toll with lashing rain and high winds and a half time score of 0-0 saw the game abandoned at that point. The local lads were doing the club proud but after a 3-3 with Lossiemouth four away defeats on the trot against Brora (0-4), Forres (0-3), Inverness Thistle (2-5) and the Lossiemouth (2-7) the team were brought back down to earth. The final home game of the season saw a 3-1 win over Ross County with two goals from Allan and a piledriver from Noble. As for the Aberdeenshire Cup Final that was a long story but to keep things short Buckie Thistle scratched and the cup was awarded to the Broch without kicking a ball. So another season had come and gone. The club had made it through a bit of a struggle at times with survival still not guaranteed. The Broch finished in 13th place or fourth bottom if you prefer however the Mogganers were 14th so that was something to cheer us up.
