Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. He was born on 15 October 1931 in

Rameshwaram,Madras Presidency,British India(now Tamil Nadu,India) usually referred to as Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.

As an aaerospace engineer

Kalam was invited byRaja Ramana to witness the country’s first nuclear test SMILIMG BUDDHA as the representative of TBRL.

As chief executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme,he also played a major part in developing many missiles of India including agni and prithvi.

He was the Chief Scientific Advisor to Prime Minster and Secretary,Department of Defence Research And Development.from july 1992 to december 1999.

*Pokhran II nuclear tests were conducted during this period ,and have been associated with Kalam aithough he was not directly involved with the nuclear programme at the time.

As a President

Kalam’s belief in the power of technology to resolve society’s problems and his views of these problems as a result of inefficient distribution of resources as a result of inefficint distribution of resources is modernistic.

He also sees science and technology as ideology free areas and emphasizes the cultivation of scientific temper and enterpreneurial drive.

In this ,he finds a lot of support among India’s newbusiness leaders like the founders of Infosys and Wipro,who began their careers as technology professionals much in the same way Kalam did.

His book “India 2020” strongly advocates an action plan to develop India into a knowledge superpower and to a developed nation by the year 2020.

Kalam is credited with the view that India ought to take a more assertive stance in international relations.

He regards his work on India’s nuclear weapons program as a way to assert India’s place as a future superpower.

PROJECTS

The 5 projects were scheduled to be completed in a time frame of only 10 years and consisted of :

(1)Nag-an anti-tank guided missile. (2)Prithvi -a surface –to –surface battlefield

missile. (3)Akash -a swift , medium-range surface-to-

air missile with a shorter range. (4)Trishul -a quick-reaction surface-to –air

missile with a shorter range. Agni-an intermediate range ballistic missie,the

mightiest.

THE DAY BEGINS:

Kalam begins his day by reading from the Bhagwad Gita.

Kalam is leading a remarkable ascetic life.

He works for about 18 hours each day.

He plays the “Rudra veena”. Took leave just twice,when his

parents died. He is a self-confessed ‘Ram Bhakt’.
