THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF SENTENCES

• Simple

• Sami speaks French.

• Compound

• Sami speaks French, but I speak Arabic.

• When Sami speaks French, I don’t understand him.

ERRORS WHEN MAKING COMPOUND SENTENCES

• Run on: (No comma + No coordinating Conjunction)

• The weather is hot we drink much water.

• Comma splice: (There is a comma + No coordinating Conjunction)

• The weather is hot, we drink much water

• Correct:

• The weather is hot, so we drink much water.

R E M E M B E R!

• Coordinating conjunctions are:• for – and – neither – but – or – yet – so • They come after the first simple

sentence, and a comma precedes them.

ERRORS OF COMPLEX SENTENCES

• Fragmet:

• A sentence that is composed of independent clause only:

• While we were playing.

• Correct:

• While we were playing, my friend came.

SINCE CAN PLAY TWO ROLES

• Since can be a time subordinator as in:

• Since I came from Kharj, my phone has been ringing.

• It also acts as a reason subordinator as in:

• Since it was too late, we slept.

DON’T FORGET

• If an independent clause comes first, you must put a comma.

• Since a comma is important, don’t forget it.
