Message Stick: Tnorala

Sunday, 19 July 2009

An emotive film by Warwick Thornton, director of Samson and Delilah and winner of this year’s Camera d’Or in Cannes.

Tnorala, in Central Australia, is a breathtaking land formation that rises above the windswept plains fringing the edge of the Western MacDonnell Ranges.

“Ladies were dancing up in the Milky Way, and the baby fell down from a coolamon, fell down there, and created that meteorite crater.”

According to the stories handed down to senior storyteller, Mavis Malbunka, the distinctive crater-shaped landmark was formed during the Dreamtime, when a baby fell to earth from its resting place among the stars.

Tnorala continues to be a place of unique and sacred importance to the Western Arrente people, who actively protect its beauty and integrity.

Beautifully filmed with time-lapse shots of the night sky, dawn and dusk and overlaid with a traditional song about the falling of the child and the creation of the place, Gosse’s Bluff, this is a poetic film from an acclaimed filmmaker.

Message Stick: Tnorala will be repeated on ABC2 – Monday, July 20 at 5:00pm

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced by CAAMA Productions. Director/Camera: Warwick Thornton.

Nature's Great Events: The Great Feast

Sunday, 19 July 2009 Final

The arrival of the summer sun along the coastal waters of Alaska and British Columbia triggers an explosion of plant life greater in scale than the Amazon rainforest. The massive amount of plant life draws in huge amounts of wildlife to feast – including billions of herring and jellyfish, and sea lions and humpback whales that migrate all the way from Hawaii.

Remarkably, the basis of all this life is something so small that it’s hardly visible to the naked eye. The sun sparks the growth of phytoplankton – the microscopic floating plants that are the basis of all life here. In late summer the plankton bloom is at its height and vast shoals of herring gather to feed, attracting a number of other animals.

Murres, small diving birds, round up the herring into balls. They dart up from below to pick off the fish, while gulls dive down from above. Pacific white-sided dolphins and sea lions also join the feast. After six months of little food, and thousands of miles travelling, the mightiest predator of all – humpback whales arrive. They not only take advantage of the balls of herring – a ready-made meal - but have also devised their own unique way of hunting in groups, by surrounding the herring with bubbles, in order to take the largest mouthful possible.

The Last Enemy

Sunday, 19 July 2009 New Series

Benedict Cumberbatch stars in The Last Enemy, a thriller about a man whose search for the truth about his brother’s death catapults him into an international conspiracy – and a passionate love affair.

The Last Enemy takes an arresting and compelling look at how technology could transform Britain into a surveillance society – threatening human relationships and destroying trust.

When the reclusive Stephen Ezard (Benedict Cumberbatch) returns to London for the funeral of his brother Michael (Max Beesley), an aid worker killed by a landmine, he feels like a stranger in his own country.

Britain has been transformed into a security state after a major terrorist attack, ID cards are strictly enforced and citizens’ every movement is watched so the government can catch the terrorists before they strike again.

After four years abroad, Stephen is confused and vulnerable and doesn’t know who he can trust.

A pawn in a mysterious conspiracy, he discovers to his cost just how far the country will go to protect its people. But, even as time is running out, Stephen becomes determined to find out what really happened to Michael... even at the risk of losing his own identity.

The Last Enemy is a thriller set in the future; a future that might just be a lot closer than you think.

Also starring Robert Carlyle as David Russell, David Harewood as Patrick Nye, Eva Birthistle as Eleanor Brooke, Anamaria Marinca as Yasim Anwar and Geraldine James as Barbara Turney.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A Box TV Production for the BBC and WGBH/Boston. Producer: Gub Neal; Director: Iain B MacDonald; Writer: Peter Berry.

Talking Heads

Monday, 20 July 2009

Richard Roxburgh is a surprisingly candid guest on this week’s Talking Heads. He’s known for pushing himself hard as an actor and director, for his control and perfectionism. He’s even been called a Rottweiler for the extent to which he sinks his teeth into a role.

“I want to be afforded some creative satisfaction at the end of these experiences, otherwise there’s just no point in doing it, even if you get paid a lot of money.”

Roxburgh tells Peter Thompson that his favourite roles were as Roger Rogerson in the ABC-TV drama Blue Murder, and the buck-toothed Duke in Moulin Rouge. He says he doesn’t have a problem with playing villains, except that the Hollywood variety is often so badly written. Indeed, Hollywood itself seems to leave him cold. “I can remember in LA being at a urinal and a guy turning to me while I was peeing and saying, ‘Hey dude! You’re the dude from MI-2! Dude!’ and bringing his mates in. It freaks me out.”

He meditates on the problem of making a meaningful life, and confesses with some surprise that being comfortably married has been a release from the meaninglessness of life as a ‘man about town’. Although he found directing his 2007 film Romulus, My Father to be extremely draining, it afforded him the opportunity to comment on the significance of relationships.

“I think one of the most important things that you can describe is the matter of life being extremely difficult, awful, sometimes an unremittingly tragic event, but that there is hope and that the hope is only to be found in love.”

Look out for Roxburgh in series two of East of Everything starting this Saturday on ABC1 at 7.30pm.

Talking Heads will be repeated on ABC2 - Tuesday, July 21 at 5:00pm

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced by ABC TV. Executive Producer: Margot Phillipson; Series Producer: Daniel Cooper.

Spooks

Monday, 20 July 2009

An emergency Middle Eastern peace summit is being held in London, after a recent Israeli attack on Gaza. The team is responsible for the security of the event, which will attract VIPs from all over the world, including the United Nations Chief Negotiator. Amidst the preparations, an internet filter on Malcolm’s computer reveals that a key part of an assassin’s toolkit is being sold on-line. Ros is concerned, especially with all the VIPs in town for the summit, and orders Lucas to collect the piece of kit. Lucas discovers the vendor is a teenager, Dean Mitchell, who lives on a council estate with his mother and is about to be kidnapped by an armed snatch squad. Lucas rescues mother and son just in time and hides them in an MI5 safe house, but he must find out who else is in pursuit of Dean. Who else knows about - and wants - this weapon? Back on the Grid, it dawns on the team that this is an inside job, and it has to be MI6 who is after the boy. It seems Dean accidentally stumbled upon MI6 black op to assassinate the UN Chief, and MI6 want to keep him quiet.

Meanwhile, Harry sits in private torment, pondering the prospect that his friend, Bernard Qualtrough, is a traitor. Unexpectedly, he receives a message from Asset K, a Russian sleeper agent he recruited 20 years ago, saying she needs to make contact urgently. Harry believes that she might have proof that Qualtrough is the mole, so with Connie’s name cleared, Harry entrusts Connie to make the meet whilst he acts as a decoy. But Harry is alarmed to find that, when he opens Asset K’s file, the evidence marks him as the mole. Is Harry really a Russian double agent, or has he been set up?

Andrew Ainslie is a dairy farmer, his wife Meryl is an artist who runs a gallery on their farm in Wiltshire. The farmhouse they live in has, over time, been cut off from their land by an expanding village, making it more time consuming for Andrew to look after his 200 dairy cows and farm. So Andrew and Meryl decide to build a new house in the heart of the farm.

The house they build is far from traditional. It is constructed from engineered timber and has a barrel-shaped zinc roof, reminiscent of a Dutch barn. Inside functionality is mixed with high finish craftsmanship by local tradesmen.

Meryl, keen to make her mark on the building, commissions local artisans to create a set of farm gates, a custom-made kitchen and a bespoke, handmade staircase, which is transported to Andrew and Meryl’s property on the back of Andrew’s tractor.

Meryl and Andrew want a lot from this house. It has to look like a barn, function as a farmhouse and an art gallery, and do justice to the surrounding landscape.

Artscape: Brian Eno In Conversation

Tuesday, 21 July 2009

Recently in Australia as curator of the Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House is none other than the man internationally acclaimed as the father of ambient music – Brian Eno.

From his beginnings as keyboard player with 70s glam rock band Roxy Music, Eno’s prolific career has seen him collaborate with the likes of David Bowie, John Cale and David Byrne as well as produce albums for bands including U2, Talking Heads and Coldplay. Further pushing his creative boundaries, Eno has more recently experimented with soundscapes combined with visual art and light projections in expressions of installation art.

Honouring his 30-odd years of creative achievements, Artscape’s Brian Eno In Conversation features an illuminating Q&A interview between Eno and ABC arts presenter Andrew Frost. Discussing Eno’s artistic inspirations, ideas and views on contemporary art, the program profiles an artist who continues to be at the forefront of not just music - but also art and technology.

With a Luminous Festival line-up that includes cutting edge music, performance and installation artists from around the world, Eno’s vision presents a curatorial savvy that is indicative of his entire career - the unique ability to gather together and collaborate with a diverse and exciting group of artists who are at the cutting edge of new creative territories.

At the heart of the festival is an exclusive new work by Eno himself entitled 77 Million Paintings. Featuring an ever-changing installation of images and sound projected on to the sails of the Sydney Opera House, the work is an amazing free form explosion of art, colour and digital technology. “It’s a new fusion between music and visual art,” explains Eno.

World's Greenest Homes

Thursday, 23 July 2009 New Series

Architect and designer Emmanuel Belliveau presents this 13-part series that takes us on a whirlwind global tour of beautiful homes that are also eco-friendly. From structures of glass and steel, to a house made from old freeway scraps, these individual, one-of-a-kind homes feature high-tech green credentials and an array of building innovations. Without sacrificing comfort or design to be eco-friendly, these houses are visually stunning and inspiring, and each of the buildings featured in this series is a testament to ingenuity and conservation.

In this episode Emmanuel visits a California beach house that’s cashing in on the ocean breezes and has become quite the television star; a green oasis in sunbaked Greece with some really smart design aspects; an enormous solar-powered house in Colorado, and in Boston, a fabulous home built out of tons of highway scraps.

With four separate living areas connected by walkways, architect David Hurtz’s beach house in Venice Beach, California, features an ingenious family-friendly layout designed to make the most of the ocean breezes. And is so unique it was chosen to co-star with David Duchovny in the series Californication.

Nestled in the hills just outside Athens, a couple’s Grecian home combines contemporary design with natural and eco-friendly features that are as old as the surrounding hills.

Garnering 85 percent of its energy from solar panels, Daniel and Isa Shaw’s sprawling home outside Aspen, Colorado, features a small carbon footprint, and is designed for relaxed family living.

Civil engineers Paul and Cristina Pedini built their huge house from the remains of an old interstate freeway. The home features 13 slabs of recycled concrete, 30 steel support beams, and a gold-flecked countertop quarried from Italy’s Mount Vesuvius.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A Cineflix and Nextfilm co-production. In association with Canwest, Planet Green and Canal vie.

Whatever! The Science Of Teens

Thursday, 23 July 2009 New Series

Teenagers are in limbo. Neither adults nor children, they are caught up in a confusing world of change.

Using entertaining segments and accessible language Whatever! The Science Of Teens taps into the most up-to-date scientific investigations of the teen brain, and the latest research into family and society, to reveal that much ‘aberrant’ teenage behaviour is really quite normal.

Hosted by award-winning journalist and broadcaster Steve Cannane, each episode focuses on one of five main themes: risk, binge drinking, sex, moodiness and sleep.

The science is brought to life by actual teenagers who serve as ‘lab rats’ in a battery of tests designed to unravel the mysteries of teenage behaviour over the course of the series, observational documentary of the teens in their natural habitat and analysis from teen experts.

In this first episode, Steve examines risk. Everyone likes a thrill but teens take it to the next level. The more dangerous a dare, the more crazy a stunt, teens just can't get enough of risk-taking.

Scientists are now realising that risk-taking is actually a crucial phase of adolescence. By taking risks we force our brains to make decisions which allow our brains to grow.

Until recently it was thought that the brain was fully developed by the time a child reached their teen years. We now know that the adult brain isn't fully formed until well into a person’s twenties.

This period of brain growth is central to carving out the future individual adult. But it also means that certain regions of the brain are still under construction. The brain’s ‘brakes’ don’t yet work, which lead teens to making some poor decisions.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Produced by Essential Media & Entertainment. Executive Producer: Chris Hilton; Producer: Ian Collie. ‘Risk’ is directed by Leo Faber.

Surveillance

Thursday, 23 July 2009

Surveillance is everywhere. We’re all being watched… on streets… in suburbs… at airports… at shopping malls… even in our own homes by technologies that make the invisible… visible.

Surveillance goes behind the security doors and discovers the secret, often disturbing world of surveillance.

From London to Las Vegas, from Washington to Rotterdam, the program examines this new surveillance society and explains how cutting edge technologies are being developed to identify, monitor, and track both people and things. Electronic trails can reveal who we are and where we’ve been. Mechanical eyes loom from every corner.

It’s a world where each technological device seems to bring advantages – to make people safer or their lives more convenient. But at the same time, as more and more of what people do is tracked and monitored, they are changing lives.

Future i.d. chips are being coupled with GPS tracking technology to locate anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Thousands of criminals in the US are monitored by GPS and these devices are only getting smaller. It seems only a matter of time before every criminal – perhaps every citizen – has an i.d. chip.

Once the stuff of science fiction these surveillance technologies are becoming reality and the more amazing they get the more controversies they create.

In the name of security, societies around the world are struggling to redraw the line between surveillance and privacy.

Trial And Retribution: The Box

Friday, 24 July 2009 Final

Two women suddenly vanishing into thin air, both married to the same man, is a catalyst for DCS Mike Walker to investigate further – despite being on leave.

While back in his home town of Glasgow visiting his senile mother (Shelia Donald), Walker is approached by an old friend, Bill Hennessy (Robert Willox).

Hennessy’s sister, Margaret (Rebecca How), has been missing, presumed dead, for more than eight years. He’s always suspected her husband Kevin Reid (Jamie Sives) and his reservations are seemingly confirmed when Reid’s second wife, Anna (Victoria Gay) also goes missing without a trace.

DI Jack Mullins (David O’Hara) originally worked on Margaret’s case and his antagonism at DCS Walker (David Hayman) encroaching on his territory is palpable but he consents to Walker examining the files.

Walker orders a records search for unidentified bodies and a box discovered buried in woodland contains an unidentified body of a woman. DNA confirms it’s Margaret Reid but the cause of death is hard to determine. In order to fit inside the box her legs had been amputated at the knee and placed on top of the body.

DI Moyra Lynch (Kerry Fox) who’s been investigating the disappearance of Reid’s second wife, Anna, also joins the team. She uncovers a computer journal kept by Anna in the months before her disappearance.

The entries seem to implicate Kevin Reid’s brother, Ronnie (Michael Nardone). Walker contacts the Glasgow incident room and DI Mullins finds Ronnie at a local stock car race where he arrests Ronnie for the murder of Margaret Reid and the suspicion of kidnapping Anna Reid.

But there is a dark bond between the brothers and Walker needs to uncover their macabre tryst before they take it to the grave.

East Of Everything: Weather Man

Saturday, 25 July 2009 New Series

Be careful what you wish for… Art Watkins (Richard Roxburgh) wakes up one morning, five months on since he and his brother Vance (Tom Long) re-opened their parents’ 70s backpacker hostel - the Far Out East - lying next to Eve (Susie Porter) in a lovers’ embrace, and counts his blessings. The brothers are getting on well, and business is finally starting to pick up.

His steady presence - along with his brother’s practical skills - has ensured the Far Out East is surviving, if not thriving. His relationship with his teenage son, Josh (Craig Stott), has continued to develop, and finally his long-awaited memoir, Gross National Happiness, is set to be launched at this year’s Writers’ Festival… what more could he hope for? Indeed everything is… PERFECT.

From the moment that word escapes from his lips, though, fate sets about delivering a series of obstacles to test Art’s newfound fulfilment. Thunder claps and tempests brew as Art and Vance’s fair-weather father – Gerry Watkins (Nick Tate) makes his way into town, shaking everything in his wake.

Vance, still heart-weary over the loss of ex-girlfriend Melanie (Gia Carides), invests all of his energies into keeping the Far Out East running. Meanwhile Melanie has renounced her worldly life in favour of an austere atonement - all in the interests of winning back Vance’s heart - or at least his body.

Eve has had enough of her living arrangements with Art; tired of overnight bags and backpackers. She’s also exhausted with her job in council; and when her Conservation Act submission for the caravan park is overlooked for a potential sale, Eve’s left feeling stagnated. The situation is exacerbated when Art sidesteps her invitation to move in with her…So when Carter Smith (Craig Hall) walks into the Writers’ Festival and into Eve’s life, she’s more than a little tempted by his light green ideologies.

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the brightest breakthroughs in technology, innovation and invention from every corner of Australia. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: agricultural scientist, Chris Russell, materials engineer, Veena Sahajwalla, and futurist and author, Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the program:

MOBILARM – by inventor Lindsay Lyon from WA. ‘Man overboard!’ may be a popular line in television and movies, but in the real world these incidents are still the single largest cause of marine fatalities. According to the National Marine Safety Committee there were 60 man overboard accidents involving injury in 2008, with 10 of those resulting in fatalities. When someone falls overboard, they rely on personal locator beacons to be found and rescued. When these devices are set off, they send a signal to a satellite which finds their GPS co-ordinates, then sends this information on with a distress signal to shore. Back on land, the relevant authority must phone to check with the owner of the beacon which ship they have come off. Then they phone whoever they can find in the area to organise a rescue. This process can take up to six phone calls, while in the meantime the closest ship is sailing further and further away, unaware that someone is struggling in the water in need of rescue.

Lindsay Lyon began his career installing marine electronics in Perth, working for his father, and now has over 25 years experience in the marine and technology industries. Recognising the limitations of current personal locator beacons, Lindsay saw an opportunity to greatly increase the chances of a man overboard being rescued. The Mobilarm utilises existing VHF marine radio infrastructure to transmit a distress signal and real-time coordinates of the person in trouble. Within seconds of the person entering the water, the emergency message is automatically broadcast to all vessels within range. By localising the ‘mayday’ signal, Mobilarm alerts people in the best position to carry out a rescue, vastly improving the chances of a man overboard being found in time.

FOLD OUT BUS RAIL – by inventors Regina Wright and Bernie Ausburn from NSW. Climbing in and out of a bus can be very difficult for disabled and elderly people. The rails are always inside the bus, making the final step quite dangerous, especially for the elderly. The Fold Out Bus Rail neatly folds away when the bus door is closed, then easily extends out beyond the steps of the bus, helping people to make that final step onto the footpath.

EATI – by inventor Michael Kennedy from QLD. Spray paint contains a potent mix of chemicals, and if you spend all day spray painting in a factory it can be a dangerous job. EATI is an improved filtering method that retrofits onto existing exhaust ducting. The invention separates paint particles from the gas so that the gas filters can operate effectively, greatly enhancing air quality and safety.

The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 – Friday, July 24 at 4:30pm
