    Build up the sides and back of the firechamber, 3 hollow blocks high for sub-floorand 2 hollow blocks and concrete block onflat for finished floor. Use the supplied soapbars to bring the concrete blocks level withat the hollow blocks.

    4 Position the one piece lintel on top of thepedestals.

    5 Fill out the side of the lintel with a specialsized concrete block and a soap bar.

    6

    Bend and place the insulation into thechimney block. Care should be taken toinsure the slots in the mineral wool arecompressed inwards.

    Clean the end of the flue pipe with asponge. Apply the ceramic hightemperature sealant to the bottom rebate.

    21 Place the flue pipe into the chimneyblock. Make sure the socket rebateis uppermost.

    3

    Use the mortar shield provided when

    applying mortar to the chimney block. The

    mortar shield will give a constant mortar bed

    and prevent mortar falling into the flue liner.

    Construct the foundation in the traditional manner.Mark the fireplace location (1640mm) and lay a damp

    proof course on the base. For sub-floor, place 2hollow blocks at each end. Place the special sizedconcrete block beside the hollow blocks and at theback on a bed of mortar. This forms the fire chamber.

    1 For finished floor place 2 special sizedconcrete blocks on the flat and continue

    to build as in 1.

    2 For timber frame construction keep 40mmaway from the stud.

    Excess ceramic sealant should beremoved with a sponge.

    Put a ring of the high temperature sealantaround the flue aperture in the lintel.

    7 The first chimney block is now set on abed of mortar on top of the lintel. Theinsulation and Ceramic liner are insertedin the standard way.

    8 The chimney breast is formed either sideof the chimney block by using thehollow blocks.

    The chimney blocks and hollow blocksshould be tied every meter to a structuralwall with the supplied masonry/steelframe tie.

    Continue to build the chimney breast withchimney blocks and hollow blocks,

    inserting the flue liners and insulation untilthe top of the chimney breast is reached.

    Continue to build the chimney as a single blockto the stack. S pecia l plas tic conne ctors areinserted in all 4 corners of the chimney block toprovide stability against wind loading. Theseshould be used from a point 1 meter below thelast point of lateral support.

    Place 6 concrete blocks over the blocks atthe top of the chimney breast.

    14Where the chimney passes through floor

    or ceiling joists, these need to be trimmed

    out leaving a gap of 40mm for timber and30mm for concrete. This gap is then filledwith non-combustible material..

    Standard timber frame ties should be usedin timber frame construction.

    11 Put the supplied expanded metal betweenthe blocks to prevent cracking.

    Continue to use the plastic connectors inall 4 corners of the block when building

    the stack. Locate & secure each block onthe plastic connectors.

    1On the last chimney block, make sure thelast flue liner does not extend above themark on the expansion plate. After cutting

    the last flue liner, put the expansion plateon a bed of mortar on the chimney block.

    2 Place the coping on a bed of mortar on topof the expansion plate.

    3

    Place the chimney pot on the copingensuring the space between the pot andcoping is sealed with mortar or othernon-porous material.

    4Also inside the chimney pot seal the spacebetween the pot and expansion plate withmortar or other non-porous material.

    5Finally apply an exteriorwaterproof render.

    Continue to use the plastic connectors inall 4 corners of the block when building

    the stack. Locate & secure each block onthe plastic connectors.

    1A corbel is required for brick or blockcladding. This gives a stack of 675mm x

    675mm or 3 bricks by 3 bricks.

    2 Continue to build the chimney blockon the corbel.

    Plain Swift Stack

    Brick or Block Rendered Stack

    A chimney tray is recommended for brickclad stacks. Fit the chimney tray over thechimney block and let it rest on the bricksas shown with the apron on the slope side.

    4Continue to build up the outer brick orblock work and inner chimney block.Wall weeps should be put into the brickjoints to ventilate and remove anytrapped moisture.

    5On the last chimney block, make sure thelast flue liner does not extend above themark on the expansion plate. After cutting

    the last flue liner, put the expansion plateon a bed of mortar on the chimney block.

    Once the roof has been covered with thewaterproof membrane start by securing

    the anchoring plates to the roof joists,position an anchoring plate on each sideof the stack.

    1Flash around the chimney and theanchoring plates in the normal fashion.

    2Carefully measure the height of theleading edge of the chimney stack.

    3

    Then measure the height of theupper edge.

    4Mark out the bigger height on one edge of

    the prefabricated stack, measuring from

    the top of the prefabricated stack.

    5 And mark out the smaller height on theopposite edge.

    6

    Now draw the angle of the roof slopeacross the prefabricated stack.

    7Cut the prefabricated stack to the requiredheight. The stack shown here is for a roofslope. A similar procedure should befollowed for a stack at the ridge.

    8Lower the prefabricated stack over thechimney blocks using the sky hooks on thecoping. Once in position the sky hooks canbe removed.

    Secure the prefabricated stack to theanchoring plate at the lower and upperends of the stack.

    10Repeat on the other side.Use 60mm tech fasteners.

    11 Insert the chimney pot into the hole on topof the stack. Fill the gap around the potand on the inside with mortar or othernon-porous material.

    Reinforcement bars should be used insteadof the plastic connectors for chimneystacks over 1.2m high. The bars must start1m below the last point of lateral support.

    1Start by inserting the plastic stoppers into

    the holes on the block before the first onewith bars.

    2Screw the bars together and inset equallengths into the 4 holes. The liquidgrouting mortar should be poured into thereinforcing channels. Keep the reinforcingbars centred.

    3

    Reinforcing

    Build the chimney to the point where thebend is required. The steel locking bandshould be placed around the liner in thechimney block before the bend.

    1Place the first chimney bend block on top ofthe standard chimney block.

    Bend Kit

    Place the two cut hollow blocks next tothe chimney block for support.

    Add the second chimney bend block withthe angled edge face down.

    4Insert the first insulated flue bend.

    5Wrap the locking band round the top of

    the bend.

    The fire chamber should be built in thetraditional manner. The inner and outer

    blocks or bricks are built on a suitablefoundation. The outer brick or block workshould be at least 6.5 brick by 2 brick wide(1460x450mm).

    1The fire opening should be 600mm(24")

    wide by 550mm(22") to the back of the

    cavity. The blockwork piers should be builton their flat side to a height of 750mmfrom finish floor.

    2 Place the lintel marked BACK (smaller) inposition, on a bed of mortar. Apply the

    high temperature sealant on the inner sideof the lintel.

    3

    External

    Place the lintel marked FRONT (larger)beside the back lintel, on a bed of mortar.

    4Seal between the lintels with mortar.

    5Place on the first chimney block so that it is flush with

    the inside of the cavity. The insulation and ceramicliners should be added in the standard way. Placestandard concrete blocks either side of the chimneyblock. Cavity wall ties should be used to tie thechimney to the outside skin.

    6

    Place the straight edge of the thirdchimney bend block on top.

    7 Insert the insulated ceramic return bendinto the bend block.

    8 Position the final bend block angle edgedown to return the kit to the horizontal.

    9

    To complete the kit place the 2 triangularcut blocks and the last half hollow block.This gives a horizontal offset of 200mm.

    A second Bend Kit is available for all otherapplications including the external chimney. Theoffset is achieved in a similar manner. The bendshould be supported in the traditional way.

    Bring the 2 separate chimneys up toroof level.

    1Mortar the chimney blocks and add thecut corbels.

    2Build standard concrete blocks around thechimney blocks.

    3

    Build in the next chimney block with theliner and insulation.

    4Add the chimney tray for brick stacks

    Place the first angle iron across the cavityat the front of the stack.

    5 Start to build the outer skin of the stack.6

    Back to Back Timber Frame

    Place the second angle iron at the back ofthe stack, and in the case of bricks addthe back strip of lead tray.

    7Position the extendible expansion plateacross the 2 chimneys and the cavity. Theexpansion plate comes in 3 sections. Themiddle section has 2 strips of waterproofsealant which when pressed on top of theother 2 sections form a watertight joint.

    8Finish the chimney in the standard wayadding the picture frame coping and thechimney pots.

    Standard concrete blocks are now placed

    on top of the lintels forming the inside wall.

    Continue to build the chimney up to roof

    level in a similar way.

    7The internal dimensions of the chimney remain thesame but the external dimensions are increased tosuit the external wall. The cavity around thechimney block should be maintained. A chimneytray is recommended for brick built chimneys.

    8 For timber frame houses a concrete lintelis required to carry the inside course ofbrick or block work in the roof space.

    Form a chamber in blocks or bricks to suitthe stove.

    1Place the concrete heads on a bedof mortar.

    2 Place the support block on a bed of mortaron the heads.

    Stove

    Secure the metal adaptor to the underside of the support block.

    4

    Insert the insulation.4

    Insert the cooker adapter pipe. Here the 45degree adaptor is shown but the 90 degreeadaptor is also available. The adaptor pipeshould be at the same level as the outputpipe from the cooker.

    5Cut and fit insulation around the sides of

    the adaptor pipe.

    6

    Adjust the adaptor pipe to suit the VE pipefrom the cooker.

    7Build the chimney system in thenormal way.

    Place the chimney block on a supportblock on a bed of mortar.

    The chimney is then built in the standardmanner as a single block.

    Mark out and build a suitable base to thesame level as finished floor.Apply a bed ofmortar to this base. Place and level thebase stone on a bed of mortar.

    1 Place the first precut chimney block onthe mortar. Bend the insulation and insertit into the block, keeping the slots of

    the mineral wool to the inside and cut offflush with the top of the block.

    2 Place the next cut chimney block on abed of mortar. Bend the insulation around

    the inside of the chimney block. Oncefitted, cut the insulation along theventilation channel.

    Bend and place the insulation around the

    inside of the cut block and cut along theventilation channel. Apply hightemperature sealant to the socket end ofjunction pipe and place into block.

    After the chimney blocks have been plastered itis recommended to score the outside plaster ofthe junction pip e. Score an a rea approx 5 mmwide and 5 mm deep to ensure plaster doesnot crack.

    Add a standard block on bed of mortar. Fit

    insert insulation around inspection pipe.

    8 Fit the ventilation grill, inspection door andceramic insert. Continue to build chimney up tocorbel using standard chimney blocks, insulationand ceramic liners.

    Central Heating

    Where the chimney passes through flooror ceiling joists, these need to be trimmedout leaving a gap of 40mm.

    11 The space between the clay junction pipeand the metal appliance pipe should besealed with a ceramic rope or othernon-combustible material.

    Put high temperature sealant around thebottom rebate of the inspection pipe andplace it into the chimney block (socketuppermost).

    5 Place a standard chimney block on a bedof mortar. Bend and insert insulation.Next place the final cut block on a bedof mortar.

    Build the open fire against the party wallup to lintel level.

    1Place the base stone on a bed of mortar at

    the required position on the lintel.

    2 Place the first chimney block on thelintel over the base stone and insert

    the insulation.

    Place the cut block on top of the firstcooker chimney block. The cut side shouldbe facing into the room with the cooker.

    4Insert the cooker adaptor pipe into the cutblock. This can be 45 or 90 degreedepending on the appliance. The height of

    the adaptor pipe should be set to therequired height for the cooker.

    5Continue to build the open fire & thecooker flue. An inspector door can beadded if desired.

    6

    Internal Combination

    The two flues are built up side by side to

    form one chimney stack at roof level.The chimney blocks should be tied eachmeter and plastic connectors used in thenormal way.
