Personal Background Born in Georgia, grew up in South Carolina In Allendale, South Carolina there was no such thing as art

or artist “I think I thought it meant I would be in a situation

different from the one I was in” Went to college, was soon drafted for army and stationed

in Japan After war, returned to college, transferred As a result of moving many different places when he was

young, he now draws and paints images that can be seen in many different ways. Nothing is definite

Key Historical Events Johns was drafted into army during Korean war As a result, he has a strong sense of patriotism The terrorist attack on the world trade center in 2001 also

influenced his patriotism, because he knew what it was like to be in the army

Because he was in war, he encourages people to look at life from different points of view. People who were safe during the war viewed it differently from people fighting in it

Through his art he encourages people to question it, and the basic shapes that he draws such as numbers and targets.
