Trampoline Competition

On 7th February Abbs Cross took Y7, 8 and 9 girls teams to the Havering Borough Trampoline Competition at Hall Mead. Congratulations to Daisy Campbell who came 3rd overall out of all the Yr9 students in her category!

Interform The PE department celebrated their fifth inter-form com-petition in March. After previously hosting football, bad-minton, basketball and netball, the competition now moved to table tennis. 7B and 8B won their respected tournaments, with 7B successfully claiming the title with-out losing a game. On the following day it was the turn for Year 9 and Year 10. A stand out performance by Callum Clark enabled 10S to win the year 10 competition and a doubles partnership of Ethan Holt and Jake Phillips helped 9C win the Year 9 competition.

Y7 Girls’ Football

On Monday 27th February the Y7A and Y7B teams travelled to Bower Park School for the Havering District Competition. They played in various weather conditions – sunshine, rain and hail! We are awaiting confirmation of where we came overall but our individual results are as follows: Abbs Cross 7A team lost 2 – 0 against Bower Park and drew 1-1 against Albany. The Y7B team lost 2-0 against Hall Mead and drew 1-1 with Redden Court. In another friendly fixture against Frances Bardsley, the Y7A lost 5-1 and the Y7B lost 3-2.

Year 7 Netball

On the 22nd March the Yr7A Netball team travelled to Albany School for the Havering Netball Rally. The girls played well in very windy conditions which made netball difficult at times! The team consisted of Lila Kershaw, Megan Hardy, Keturah Treasure, Brooke Sier, Chloe Slade, Leah Hayes, Connie Hatcher and Rume Okuku. The girls were very enthusiastic and worked well as a team. Overall Abbs Cross came 4th out of 6 in our pool. The results are as follows -

Year 9 Netball

On Monday 6th March the Yr9 team competed in their rally. The team consisted of Evie Perry, Charlotte Hind, Daisy Campbell, Taylor Digney, Rebecca Thacker, Erin Lewis, Ciara Byrne and Jessica James. They had a testing run of six games in a row against some tough opponents. The girls worked extremely hard and the team had to adapt due to some injuries mid-way through the tournament. The results were as follows:

I would like to begin by thanking you all for your continued support over the last term. There have been a lot of reasons to be positives about the en-gagement, progress, achievement, attendance and behaviour of students in Year 11. We are now in the final weeks before the summer examinations and Year 11 remain focussed in their lessons and remain committed to interventions before and after school.

On Thursday 9th March Year 10 and 11 students studying ‘An Inspector calls’ for their English Litera-ture GCSE were given the opportunity to see a ver-sion of this performed in London. It was a truly fan-tastic performance and students found the trip very worthwhile. This opportunity has helped to aid their understanding of the play in preparation for their Literature exam. Some students in Year 11 also took the opportunity to visit the London School of Economics where they attended lectures, toured the campus and met undergraduates. Stu-dents commented on the value of experiencing university at this stage in their education because it helped them set goals and understand how im-portant it is to always do your best.

We want to ensure all students reach their full po-tential in their forthcoming examinations and this can’t happen without support at home. Please en-courage your children to revise and take up all the opportunities offered to them.

A big thank you for ensuring your child attends school each day. Attendance is the key to success and every day really does count. It important to keep positive and stay committed. A good work ethic will pay off. If you try your best you will achieve your best. Good luck.

On Friday 24th February a group of Year 11 Students accompanied by Mrs Moore and Mr O’Shea had the opportunity to visit the London School of Economics to get a sense of life as a University Student in London. We had the opportunity to find out information about the application process, accommodation and facilities.

When we arrived at one of the many campus areas we were taken to a lecture room not even 2 minutes walk away yet the freedom of the students was obvious. Students were sitting on their study sofas all working intently on laptops or sharing a coffee in the various eateries visible from the main entrance.

We listened to a presentation about university life, focusing mainly on the London area. The Lecturer, Sarah, explained the importance of A level choices and results using their entry criteria as an example. She the spoke about the benefits of student life in London, which reassured many of us as the prospect of University seems like a daunting experience at our age.

After learning a little more about the university itself we separated into two groups and were taken on a tour of the site, which spread over a 10 minute walk through London, led by two current students. We saw many of the facilities includ-ing, a sports park, the student union campus and the library which contained over 4 million items within a 6 storey high building.

The guided walk added to the overall experience, with the trip being a valuable one for all that went, whether they were interested in the courses on offer or not. The students at Abbs Cross thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Trip to the London School of

Economics On Sunday 12th February 22 students and 3 members of staff gathered at 5am to set off on the adventure of a trip to Russia. Snowy UK weather had prepared the group for the journey and the flight to St Petersburg went quickly with the students having the opportunity to meet Igor, the St Petersburg guide. The weather was a balmy -4 when we checked in to the hotel Park Inn Pulkovskaya situated opposite the memorial to the fighters who died in the siege of Leningrad.

The students had the opportunity to sample Russian cuisine although the restaurant did seem to change from one meal to the next. There was a full programme in St Petersburg which gave everyone the opportunity to understand and get a feel for the former Russian capital city. A city tour gave impressions of the city with photo stops at St Isaacs Cathedral, Nevski Prospekt, the Cruiser Aurora, the river Neva, the Winter Palace and the Eternal Flame. There were visits to the Church on the Spilt Blood, the Winter Palace, the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress and the Piskarevskoye War Cemetery. Igor regaled the group with tales of Peter the Great, the Romanov family and his passion for malachite. One evening was spent watching a folk performance with a rousing rendition of Kalinka. The group went out of the city boundary to see the Summer Palace with the famous amber room.

After three nights we transferred to the railway station for the overnight double decker train to Moscow.

In Moscow the group were met by the patriotic Edward who delighted in telling us that everything in Moscow is the biggest, the best, the most beautiful and other superlatives. A chilly -14 greeted the group in Moscow for the introduction to Red Square and a traditional Russian omelette and pancake breakfast (or shredded cabbage for some). A tiring first day touring the capital city to see the достопримечательности (sights) such as Red Square, the Olympic Stadium, Moscow University, Christ the Saviour Church, the Kremlin and the Arbat culminated with an eventual check in to the vast Hotel Cosmos situated opposite the space memorial to Yuri Gagarin. We travelled out to Sergeev Posad which is the home of the Russian Orthodox Church where snow and the world’s thickest hot chocolate were sampled and students had the experience of seeing the Moscow Underground system with its chandeliers, marble and statues as well as the incredible buskers. One evening was spent in the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games where students played 1980s games accessed with old Soviet kopeck coins. The last morning was spent visiting Mr Putin in the Kremlin before our transfer to the airport for our flight home.

The group made a favourable impression on the Russians with their interests and willingness to communicate in Russian. It is a curiosity for the Russians that British students are actually studying the language and they like to hear this. It was easy to spend time with the students who approached every visit positively and enthusiastically – it was a memorable and enjoyable experience. Eating traditional Russian food, hearing material covered in class in real situations and just speaking authentic Russian is something for all to take away. Theatre Trips

The Crucible, Queens Theatre, Wednesday 22nd February 2017

Year 10 GCSE Drama students attended a creative master class and evening performance of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Cru-cible’, at the Queens Theatre. During the master class the students worked with director Douglas Rintoul covering performance and direction elements and then worked alongside a member of the lighting technical team looking at key design aspects of the production. The Year 10 students were a credit to the school, actively participating in practical tasks with passion and enthusiastically asking questions about the creative process.

The Woman in Black, Fortune Theatre, Thursday 23rd February 2017

A group of Year 10 Drama students attended a workshop and matinee performance of Susan Hill’s ‘The Woman in Black’, at the Fortune Theatre. The workshop, was led by theatre professionals and the students were led onto the actual set to explore and experience what makes the ghostly tale of the most successful West End shows ever. Throughout the workshop students practically explored the plays key themes and discovered how the woman in black

creates tension throughout the performance.

Trip to Russia - Mr Wheatley

Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College is pleased to announce that our school production of ‘Fame’ was a resounding success. The cast impressed audiences in a matinee performance for local primary schools, followed by three spectacular evening performances. Every night both cast and crew earned a standing ovation for the professional standards of work and left the audiences “Dancing on the sidewalk”.

The story of ‘Fame’ focused on the burning ambitions of about 10 students at New York's High School for the Performing Arts. We meet the students when they arrive at the school for their first term and then see snapshots of their lives during their studies, climaxing with their graduation. Along the way, each of them has their own coming-of-age related problems, but together the characters continue to dance and sing on the road to stardom.

The high standard of performance was only possible due

to student’s talent, dedication and desire to “Make

Magic”. The cast, crew and orchestra have attended

rehearsals since September and have challenged

themselves at every opportunity. There will be some

great memories and learning attained from all their

“Hard work”, and no doubt the memories made will go

on to “Live forever”.

School production -

Fame Year 7 Boys’ Football

This is a newly formed team that has valiantly worked hard in all of their fixtures. This was typified in their 4-4 draw against Brittons, after going 4-2 down with 5 minutes to go. The lone striker Isaac Sijuade scored two goals one of them was scored very coolly via a penalty with the last kick of the game. This season has been capped off with many outstand-ing performances seen by Noah Phillips and Harrison Jacobs. The team have unfortunately not qualified for the semi-finals in their first year, however there is a lot of character in this team, who will relish the opportunity of playing 11 a-side football next year. Year 9 Boys’ Football Year 9 have had a very strong year, with over 15 goals scored across 6 games. A 5-1 win against Bower Park being our big-gest victory. The team have narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals, however if there aren’t any injuries to the squad we can expect players such as Georgie Hatcher, Sam Mellows, Andy Crawford, Rekem Ereku and Goalkeeper Rohan Hatton to continue to play big roles in the squad to push for the Havering league Final.

Year 10 Boys’ Football

After a strong national cup run in the first half of the year, Year 10 narrowly lost to Hall Mead and Redden Court before beating Harris Academy 5-2. Jamie Kiddell has been a stand out student over the season, consistently putting in high quali-ty displays in goal. There should also be a special mention to the side that beat Harris Academy 5-2. Abbs Cross dominated the game throughout, Sam Cottee played exceptionally well in defensive, he also opened the scoring and this was followed up by a hatrick from George Barnacle and a goal in his first game for the school this year by Harvey Kelly. Encouraging signs in preparation for their final game of the season away at Coopers Coborn.

Year 11 Boy’s Football Year 11 have competed in the Havering league this season. Performances and results have improved over the season and they are now within reach of the 'play off' semi finals. They started off the season losing to a very good Emerson Park side in a one sided game which demonstrated improve-ments needed to made in all areas. This was followed up by a win at Coopers in a far more rounded performance. More recently though wins at Bower Park and Hall Mead have given the boys an excellent chance of progressing. The final league game away to Royal Liberty will be a real test. If we progress, the semi finals will be after Easter as the boys look to emulate last years' team by winning the League com-petition. Notable performances so far this season include Daniel Miles at centre back alongside Joe Stanley. Curtis Clarke at left back as well as Luke Jacobs in midfield with Luke Sherwood and Hakan Shukri providing a real threat up front. Special mention to Tom Summers who has been excel-lent in goal. The results are as follows: Emerson Park - lost 4 - 1 Coopers Coborn - won 3- 0 Bower Park - won 3 - 2 Hall Mead - won 3 - 1 Harris Chafford - conceded to Abbs Cross
