For the Sidney Crosbys of the world, the road to professional hockey employment is more straight-

forward than a Saskatchewan highway. Then there are the Jason Jaffrays of the hockey gal-

axy – players who lack the blue-chip pedigree, but rise from relative obscurity to establish themselves.

Ask Jaffray, the 28-year-old Abbotsford Heat centre, to trace his journey in pro hockey, and he’ll spin you a whale of a tale.

“My career has kind of jumped all over the place,” noted Jaffray, refl ecting on an eight-year odyssey that has taken him through Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Manitoba, before landing him in Abbotsford.

We’ll begin Jaffray’s tale in his fi nal year of junior hockey with the Western Hockey League’s Kootenay Ice. Jaffray was a key cog on a stacked Kootenay squad, but the Ice shipped him to the Swift Current Broncos at midseason. Jaffray was gutted when the Ice went on to win the Memorial Cup, but before you

bemoan his misfortune, it should be noted that his truncated tenure with Kootenay wasn’t a total loss. It was in Cranbrook that Jaffray ended up meeting his future wife Michelle, who was the daughter of his billet family.

Jaffray was undrafted out of junior hockey, so he signed on with the ECHL’s Roanoke (Virginia) Express in the fall of 2002. With the Express, he had the good fortune of playing on a line with a pair of returning league all-stars, and he earned ECHL rookie of the year honours after racking up 34 goals and 51 assists in 64 games.

Following a couple of seasons with the ECHL’s Wheel-ing Nailers, Jaffray got his fi rst extended look at the AHL level with the Cleveland Barons in 2004-05. Playing on a line with future NHLers Ryane Clowe and Marcel Goc, Jaffray posted 10 goals and six assists in his fi rst 30 games.

But then, Jaffray’s career hit an unexpected road-

block. The Barons forgot to renew his working visa, and in the post-9/11 United States, that meant an immediate one-way ticket back to Canada.

Jaffray was suddenly unemployed, and there was nothing he could do but point his vehicle towards his hometown of Olds, Alta.

But somewhere between Cleveland and Olds, Jaffray’s cell phone rang. Manitoba Moose general manager Craig Heisinger was on the other end of the line. Two Moose forwards had come down with some sort of sickness, and Heisinger wanted to know if Jaffray could be in Hamilton to suit up for a game against the Bulldogs that night.

Problem was, the puck dropped in six hours, and Jaf-fray was about an eight-hour drive away from Hamilton. No matter – Jaffray pulled a U-turn, put the pedal to the metal and made it to the rink just minutes before the start of the game.

Brett Palin isn’t the flashiest player on the Abbots-ford Heat – far from it.

But perhaps that’s part of the reason that the 25-year-old blueliner is the perfect pick to serve as the first captain in Heat franchise history.

After all, the Calgary Flames – the parent club of Ab-botsford’s AHL squad – have long espoused a philoso-phy of blue-collar work ethic and attention to detail. Palin boasts those qualities in spades.

“When you look around the dressing room, he’s a guy who stands for a lot of the right things we believe in,” Heat coach Jim Playfair said, explaining his decision to tap Palin to be team captain. “He’s a solid citizen and a solid player.”

Players of Palin’s ilk – the stay-at-home defenceman – tend to fly under the radar with fans and media, who are more apt to be seduced by the dazzling goal or the highlight-reel save. Thus, it’s somewhat ironic that the letters of Palin’s surname can be rearranged to spell “plain.”

But Palin’s on-ice contributions aren’t lost on Playfair, who appreciates the blueliner’s rock-solid play in his own zone, particularly on the penalty kill.

“We pride ourselves on developing into a good defending team, and that’s how Brett sees his game,” Playfair said. “He’s a real good competitor, and a good vocal leader for our players. I think he’s a good corner-stone to develop our group around.”

Palin found out he’d be wearing the captain’s ‘C’ prior to the Heat’s home opener against the San Antonio Rampage on Oct. 9. It’s a responsibility that he relishes.

“It’s definitely an honour,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot of good things from a lot of good people along the way, and now I think it’s time for me to take that and mould it into my own thing.”

Palin knows what a winning team looks like. During his junior career, he was a key member of a dynastic Kelowna Rockets squad that won Western Hockey League titles in 2003 and 2005, and a Memorial Cup championship in 2004.

The 2009-10 campaign marks Palin’s fifth year in the Flames’ system, and he says that what sets this Heat team apart is its ability to put the puck in the net.

“We’ve got a really offensive foward group, and I think that’s the biggest change,” he said. “In my four previous years, I haven’t really seen many games where we’ve scored five, six, seven goals in a night. Whereas this year, our team has a lot of firepower.”

As for the Heat defensive corps, Palin is the elder statesman of a group that features three rookie pros – John Negrin, Keith Aulie and Keith Seabrook – and he finds himself cast in a mentoring role.

“Based on age, we’re all pretty young,” he noted. “They’re all good hockey players, they’re all good guys, and they’re all willing to learn.”

Palin is a Naniamo product, and he’s enjoying being back in B.C. after playing for the Flames’ AHL affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska and Moline, Illinois. His parents have Heat season tickets, and he’s relished the opportunity to play in front of friends and family.

“This is my fifth year (in the AHL), and this is the first time that my brother (Marc, age 23) has been able to watch me play a professional hockey game,” Palin noted. “They’re not always going to be here, but it’s nice when family and friends can come and visit.”

Palin’s on-ice contributions can’t be summarized with a stat, but plus-minus comes the closest. Through the first eight games of the season, Palin’s +6 rating was tops on the Heat by two points.

“It’s definitely something I try to take pride in,” he said. “You can’t rely on that stat to tell you every-thing, but I think that as a defence-man, you want to make sure you stay on that plus side.”

We caught up with Playfair last week, following the Heat’s strong 3-0-2-1 start.

Q We’ve got almost a month of the regular season under our belts. How would you evaluate your team’s start to the season?

A “I think we’re learning. The players are willing to learn, and they expect to get better. They’re recognizing how to compete together.”I think we can do a lot better job of keeping our shots-against down. We can do a lot better job on our power play. We can do a better job of staying away from the lazy stick penalties – 18 of our 33 penalties (through the first six

games) were on stick fouls. So in areas like that we can improve, and we will improve.”

Q In five of the first six games this season, your team was out-shot by the opposition. How do you explain that, and to what extent are you con-cerned?

A”The biggest thing is that we’ve given up four five-on-threes, and there are a lot of shots coming out of those. And the 33 minor penalties we’ve taken, a lot of shots come on those. Those are probably the two main reasons.”

Q While your team has given up a fair number of shots, the goalten-ders have kept you in the game most nights. How would you assess the play of Leland Irving and Matt Keet-ley to this point?

A”I think Leland Irving has been the better of the two. Obviously the game in Manitoba (a 5-4 shootout loss on Oct. 14) wasn’t a real strong game for Matt Keetley, and so he’s in a posi-

tion where he’s working to get himself back into the lineup. I like the fact that David Shantz is here – I think it’s a real healthy competition, and I think it sets us up to be a much more competitive team amongst our goaltenders, which will prove to be good down the line.”

Q On Oct. 13, the Heat beat the Manitoba Moose 4-2 on the road to post the first win in franchise history. After a couple of heartbreaking OT losses to the San Antonio Rampage the previous weekend, how big a deal was that for your team’s confidence?

A”In each game over the course of the year, we’ve given ourselves a chance to win. They haven’t all been pretty, obvi-ously, but we’ve been around each and every game. To get that first win, to me, was an important thing for the owner-ship. I think that for them to see that they were able to build something and put something together that had some traction was enjoyable for them. Also, the pride of the city and pride of the fans, knowing that the team was able to put one together and then build on it.”

Q When this interview hits news-stands, your team will be in the midst of a six-game road trip – its second-longest of the season. What’s the biggest key to success on such a long road swing?

A”We have to do a real good job of managing our time, managing ourselves rest-wise and preparation-wise. We

have to make sure we’re prepared to start the first game and be focused.”

Q You’ve got a very young group on defence. They’ve put up a lot of points (20 points over the first six games combined), but there have been adventurous moments in the defensive zone at times. How would

you assess the play of your team’s defence to this point?

A”I think that when you have half your group of defencemen as first-year play-ers, it becomes a team responsibility to help get better defensively. As far as of-fence from the blueline, they’re fine. I’d like to see them get a few more (point) shots through and on net, but I think

overall, they’re fine. “As they start to understand other teams’ forechecks and how other teams want to compete against them, they’ll help themselves get better. There are tons of details that go into a defence-man’s ability to play. “So I think they’ve been fine, and I think they’ll get a lot better.”

scored the lone goal for Manitoba. It’s a goal he remembers to this day.

“Alex Burrows threw it to me from the corner, for a back-door tap-in,” he recalled with a smile. “I defi nitely didn’t have my legs that night, and I had a gas-station sub as my pregame meal. It was just kind of one of those things that was meant to be.”

Indeed, it was in Manitoba that Jaf-fray’s career really started to fi nd some traction. Over four-and-a-half season with the Moose, playing alongside the likes of Burrows, Ryan Kesler and Kevin Bieksa, Jaffray became the franchise’s all-time leader in game-winning goals, power-play goals and plus-minus, and No. 2 in goals, assists and points.

The Vancouver Canucks, the Moose’s parent club, took notice, and in 2007 Jaffray inked his fi rst NHL contract. He played 33 games as an injury fi ll-in with the Canucks between 2007 and 2009, tallying four goals and six assists in the process.

But when Jaffray looked at the Canucks’ depth chart and saw young up-and-com-ers like Cody Hodgson, Michael Grabner

and Sergei Shirokov, he started to wonder whether he was in Vancouver’s long-term plans. So this past summer, he opted for a fresh start and signed with the Calgary Flames as a free agent.

Jaffray cracked the Flames roster out of training camp this fall, only to be sent down to Abbotsford after a couple of weeks. He still feels good about his decision to join the Flames’ organization, though.

“I don’t think I would have had a chance at making Vancouver out of camp,” he said. “I knew if I came into a new camp and fresh system, I could open up some eyes. It’s not going to matter who’s drafted . . . it’s about who’s going to fi ght for that spot, who’s going to score goals in the preseason, who’s going to do the right things.

“I think my style of play really fi ts in well with the Calgary Flames’ style of play, and it’s been a good fi t for me. I think I have gotten that opportunity, and it’s just a mat-ter of waiting for an injury or a call-up to get back.”

Jaffray was already a familiar face to Abbotsford hockey fans thanks to his time with the Canucks, and he further endeared himself by scoring goals in his fi rst three games with the Heat. The stocky cen-tre blends tough-as-nails play along the boards with a sniper’s fi nish, and while he’s been a mainstay on the Heat’s top line, it’s no stretch to envision him being an effective third- or fourth-line checker at the NHL level.

According to Heat coach Jim Playfair, Jaffray’s job is to “develop an NHL-style game” while toiling with the Heat.

“He’s got to have those details of his game in place so that when he goes up there (to the NHL), it’s a slide for him, not a major step,” Playfair explained. “We can’t expect him to be a top goal-scorer down here and then be a top defender up there. He’s got to be a top defender in both places, so that it becomes a natural slide for him, not a major adjustment.”

With the Heat, Jaffray fi nds himself in a leadership role on a youthful outfi t, which has been a bit of an adjustment coming

from a veteran-laden Moose club. “I’ve come from a team in Manitoba

where I played with Mike Keane and Nolan Baumgartner and Jason Krog – guys who have been around so long, you almost take it for granted that when something is going wrong, they’ll straighten it out,” he noted. “Here, it seems like there are only three or four guys who are married on this team. In Manitoba, there were only three or four guys who were single.”

Away from the rink, Jaffray has found that fatherhood has helped him to focus. He and Michelle have a two-and-a-half year old daughter named Kennedy, and she’s been a fi xture at Heat games cheer-ing for her dad.

“It’s life-changing,” said Jaffray, noting that his breakout season with the Moose (2006-07) coincided with Kennedy’s birth. “You could have a real crappy game, and you come home, and you’ve got this little girl who’s smiling and happy to see you. You walk in the door, and it just changes everything.”

Road Warriors and Number Crunchers

I am pretty sure that when Lorca, the Spanish poet, spoke of the road, he probably wasn’t evoking images of hockey players.

But for the Abbotsford Heat, the road and how they perform on it will set the stage for what type of season they will have in their inaugural American Hockey League campaign.

Let’s light the scene: We already know that Abbotsford is 2,200 kilometres away from the Heat’s nearest opponent, the Manitoba Moose. Over the course of the season, the Heat will jet away to the farthest points of North America while chasing the Calder Cup.

On their first road trip to Winnipeg, the team travelled just 4,400 km from

start to finish. On their next road trip – which takes them to from Grand Rapids, Mich., to Chicago, back to Grand Rapids, to Milwaukee, Wis., then to Hamilton, Ont., and finally ending in Cleveland, Ohio – the players will travel 10,100 km in 11 days, playing six games in that stretch.

But before anyone feels sorry for the players, let us make a couple of things clear. First, these are professional hockey players who know that travel comes with the job. Second, every team has to travel. Yes, while Abbotsford is the farthest team west and without question will have the hardest travel schedule in the AHL this year, the team knew this coming in and will make no excuses. Which is why getting the travel excuse out of the way has to be first and foremost on the Heat’s radar.

“The road separates us from our fami-lies and loved ones, but allows us to

focus on the task at hand, which is win-ning hockey games,” said Heat forward Peter Vandermeer on the recent road trip to Winnipeg. “Getting out on the road early will allow our team to bond, but it will also open up lines of commu-nication. You get to know everyone on the team while on the road, which will only benefit our team in the long run.”

How important is the road? Last season the predecessor to the Heat, the Quad City Flames, won just 13 times in 40 games away from home. The Flames missed the postseason by one point. Sixteen teams qualify for the playoffs every year.

So keep some numbers in mind:15 wins was the minimum number of

victories that a AHL playoff team had last year, and the average was 19. Last season the Houston Aeros and Port-land Pirates qualified for the postsea-son despite winning just 15 games on

Let’s finish off with some good num-bers news.

Last year, this franchise opened 1-4-1 for three points through their first six games. At the same point this season, the Heat are 3-0-2-1 for nine points, marking a six-point swing in their first six games.

Points are important any time of the year – just look at the numbers.

4Q You’re a rookie pro – what was the first thing you bought with

your first professional paycheck?

A “You know what, I’ve just bought things for the house (Negrin shares a suite with teammate Keith Seabrook). We’re just notic-ing little things around the house that we’re missing. I had to get some ice cube trays.”

Q What’s your greatest accomplishment in hockey?

A “Probably the end of last season, being called up to Calgary and playing those (three) games. It was exciting just to be up there and get a taste of playing in the NHL.

“The last game of the season, we were playing the Edmonton Oilers, and I got my first NHL point. I passed it to Jamie Lundmark and I went off on a change, and I didn’t even know I’d gotten the assist. I remember sitting on the bench, and Bertuzzi and all the guys congratulating me. Getting to hear my name announced was pretty cool.”

Q You’re from West Vancouver. What’s something you can get in your hometown you can’t get anywhere else?

A “A lot of places I’ve lived in for hockey, there’s not a lot of skiing. But five minutes from my house there are ski hills – Grouse Moun-tain and Cyprus. So growing up, I did a lot of snowboarding and skiing.”

Q What’s your perfect day off in the off-season?

A “Probably just going out in the boat and relaxing with friends.”

Q As a teenager, which posters did you have on your wall?

A “Joe Sakic. He’s from Burnaby, kind of a hometown boy, and I al-ways enjoyed watching him. He was an exciting player and a good leader.”

Q Which song on your iPod do you hope your teammates never find out about?

A “Probably Enya – Now We Are Free. If I rocked that in the dressing room, a lot of guys would be shaking their heads. They’d probably fine me.”

Q It’s still early in the season, but so far, who’s got the worst fash-ion sense on this Heat team?

A “I’m going to say my roommate Keith Seabrook, just because we’re always critiquing each other’s styles. His style is all right – he just tries a little too hard.”

that moment for you?

A “It was pretty special to score that, and to be in the record books. I think they’re even putting the stick in the Hockey Hall of Fame, so that’s pretty cool.”

Q Last season, you and Heat teammate Mikael Backlund were on the Kelowna Rockets team that won the WHL title and made it all the way to the Memorial Cup final. What was that experience like?

A “It was an unbelievable experience. We knocked off three top-end teams (in the WHL playoffs), and we weren’t supposed to get out of the second round. It felt pretty good to beat all of them, especially the Calgary Hitmen. Then to get a berth in the Memorial Cup, that doesn’t happen very often. They say it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it was a great experience.”

Q What was the first thing you bought with your first professional pay-check?

A “We haven’t got it yet, but I ordered a new Camaro. It just caught my eye, so me and my dad are splitting it.”

Q If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

A “I’ll go with my grandma, because she cooks a good steak.”

Q What’s your favourite movie?

A “The Hangover. It’s just hilarious. It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, for sure.”

Q You’re from Hanna, Alta. How do you spend a perfect day off in the off-season?

A “Sleep in, get a bite to eat, and probably go for a round of golf. Then head out to the lake at night.”

Q What’s your favourite pre-game meal?

A “Chicken and rice, sort of a stir-fry. A group of us usually go out to eat.”

Q Hockey players are renowned for practical jokes. What’s the best one you’ve pulled off, or the best one you’ve seen?

A “Probably shaving cream in the skates. I haven’t done it to anyone yet – I’ve just seen it happen.”
