March President’s Message

Why do so many of our members give time, energy, talents and resources? Activities like our book sale and our Lavish Lunch raise money to support women we will, most likely, never meet.

When I arrived home yesterday after one more committee meeting, I found this letter in the mail:

“To the American Association of University Women: My name is ______, and I am a dental hygiene student at Oakland Community College, class of 2020. I have been selected as a candidate for your AAUW Birmingham Branch Annual Scholarship. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you. I am beyond grateful. This scholarship will assist me on my path to become a registered dental hygienist. Once I have my licensure, I will have continued education opportunities that I can pursue to advance my education. With this career, I, as a single mother, will be able to provide for my three young daughters with the care they deserve, and one day help them reach dreams of their own. The ability to do this means the world to me. Your support is very generous and will make a difference! It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, ………………….” (Note: the

student’s name is omitted because our bulletin is on our website).

An accompanying letter from Daniel Jenuwine, who attended our December meeting and is the executive director of OCC, stated that this student began the semester with a little more ease and a little less worry, all because of the AAUW Birmingham Scholarship.

Our efforts made a difference in this young woman’s life and many others throughout the years. These women, their families and all the lives they touch are why we plan fund raising events and ask for your donations.

According to AAUW research titled “Deeper in Debt,” women carry more student loan debt which takes longer to pay off. More women are returning to the classroom to further their education to be more able to provide for themselves and their families. It’s difficult to reach for your dreams with debt that may take years to clear.

We, as a branch, are making a difference. We are successful when all or our members help. Our next event is the Lavish Lunch. Please, attend and bring your friends. Each individual makes a difference! There is more information on this event in the bulletin. If you are unable to attend, consider sending a donation. All donations are tax deductible if the check is made out to AAUW Birmingham Branch Foundation, Inc.

In September we will be hosting our 93rd annual book sale, and due to problems with our usual venue, we are having to move. We will need more help than ever getting the word out about this. You will be reading more of the plans soon. Carol Pyke is the overall chair of this event. If you have questions, contact her.

So, as we go on working together to further our mission, remember what we do matters. Sally Doty

The February Study and Interest Group Spotlight is on:

BEYOND ADELANTE

Beyond Adelante was formed to offer members an opportunity to read a variety of books offering true “diversity,” that is, the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc. It includes differing elements or points of view. To that end, we include a mixture of fiction and nonfiction.

At the January meeting we discussed The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. This German forester draws upon scientific discoveries to describe how trees are like human families. Tree parents live together with their children, communicating with them, using scent to talk, and supporting them. They share nutrients with those who are sick and struggling and use communal action against pests.

Beyond Adelante meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. for socializing and snacks, with discussion at 7 pm. We select our books for the following year at our June potluck dinner. Titles for the remaining months are Killers of the Flower Moon, Nomadland, and August Snow.

We are happy to welcome new members. Please contact

co-chairs Sue Winowiecki at [email protected], or Linda Schnorbus at [email protected].

COMMUNITY OUTREACH STUDY/INTEREST GROUP Our February luncheon donations were delivered to South Oakland Shelter to help stock the shelves of their food bank. South Oakland Shelter (SOS) is best known for its rotating shelter program, housed in churches and synagogues in Oakland County and supported by over 60 congregations. This organization serves the homeless population in Oakland County. Their goal is to find stable housing for the individuals they serve. There are over 3800 homeless individuals in Oakland County, including over 750 families and over 700 children. The largest subgroup in the homeless population living in poverty is women and children. The AAUW strategic plan affirms that work we do to assist women and children find housing and employment is important work and in line with their goals. The next Community Outreach program will be working at the Forgotten Harvest warehouse repacking fresh, nutritious food. We are looking at a date in mid-April to share our time and skills. More information will be emailed to members in the near future. Hope you can find time to volunteer. Cathy Hurley Community Outreach
