framed the dangers dust storms present to the traveling public provided tips for those who encounter dust storms on the road and introduced the wildly successful ldquoHaboob Haiku Challengerdquo (ldquohaboobrdquo is an Arabic term for a dust storm) The campaign was launched during the statersquos Monsoon Awareness Week and timed to coincide with the start of monsoon season when dust storms are more likely

The goals of the news release were simple to articulate yet hard to achieve reduce the number and severity of dust-related crashes on the statersquos highways On a more basic level the secondary goal of the release was to build awareness of and attention to the overall safety theme of not driving into dust storms The objective was to change driver behavior ndash a true challenge ndash through a reinforcement of the safety message through the media including morning TV show appearances and in-studio radio shows

This news release and the campaign it launched were deemed necessary and vital to the state of Arizona following several large horrific dust-related crashes on Interstate 10 These crashes were generally caused by drivers thinking they could just drive through the dust while other vehicles stopped in the travel lanes because of the zero visibility conditions Those conflicting actions created fiery fatal crashes in a heavily traveled corridor ndash taking a toll on both driver safety and the movement of commercial goods

2) Target audience While the target audience was all drivers on Arizona roads there was special attention given to reaching

the ldquoDisneyland Trafficrdquo ndash those visitors just passing through the state who might encounter a dust storm but who are not exposed to the regular public service announcements To reach this audience radio ads were secured and news coverage generated by this news release bolstered sustained efforts to promote this message to effectively reach this pass-through traffic The targeted audience primarily focused on traffic on the Interstate 10 corridor between Phoenix and Tucson the statersquos two major metropolitan areas with a combined population of more than five million residents This is a heavily traveled corridor for commercial traffic and taking a ldquocontent marketingrdquo approach the news release was shared with trucking companies travel bureaus and other direct-to-driver sources to reproduce in newsletters and employee communiques Beyond pass-through and commercial traffic ADOT took extra efforts to reach out to the Spanish-speaking community including newspapers south of the border to help educate drivers entering the state from Mexico These efforts were successful with the Spanish-version of this release distributed at various consulates in Mexico and Arizona to reach out to the Spanish-speaking audience in addition to widespread media dissemination

dust-prone areas In addition every commercial broadcast TV station in the state ndash seven in Phoenix five in Tucson and three in Yuma ndash covered the campaign with an emphasis on the safety tips for drivers and the ldquoHaboob Haiku Challengerdquo Total estimated advertising-equivalency value was at least $115860 for the coverage generated by this news release making it the top publicity-value news release for the agency in 2013 A recent public survey conducted by ADOT found that 707 percent of respondents had an awareness of the ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo campaign in part through the aggressive media relations demonstrated by this release These driver tips also have a high awareness among reporters with all television news stations mentioning them and highlighting ADOTrsquos campaign during their annual summer monsoon-weather special reports Media relations has been a cornerstone in the strategy to reach out to drivers across the state The ldquoHaboob Haiku Challengerdquo was wildly successful with more than 300 unique haikus submitted from across the US (and a few from international locations) While a creative way to draw attention to the campaign and get people thinking about the driver tips the creativity did not overshadow the message The haikus submitted primarily through social media focused on the dangers presented by dust storms and the ldquopull asiderdquo messaging The winning haiku as voted on by the public was ldquoOh snap crackle pop Dust has you blind pull over or yoursquoll want to cryrdquo For 2013 Arizona recorded one significant dust-related crash a 19-vehicle pileup on Interstate 10 Law enforcement however reported that more drivers pulled to the side of the highway during the storm heeding the advice of the release There were fewer injury crashes in 2013 than reflected by the six-year annual average of eight dust-related crashes with injuries on Arizona highways There are a total of about 193 dust-related crashes each year on all Arizona roads that number also decreased in 2013 while the number of dust storms remained constant While it is difficult to directly attribute the lower-than-average number of dust-related injury and non-injury crashes solely to the ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo news release and associated campaign it is encouraging to see data suggesting that a difference has been made in driver behavior

Tips for drivers who encounter a dust storm

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm

If you encounter a dust storm check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front back and to the side) and begin slowing down

Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway mdash do it as soon as possible Completely exit the highway if you can

Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane look for a safe place to pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway

Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel

Turn off all vehicle lights including your emergency flashers

Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake

Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass

Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds

A driverrsquos alertness and safe driving ability are always the top factors in preventing crashes

PHOENIX (KGUN9-TV) - The Arizona Department of Transportation is asking people tochannel their inner poets and submit Haiku poems to spread the word about dust stormsafety

ADOT first began the Haboob Haiku challenge last year and is bringing it back for a secondround

A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that follows the rules of three lines of five seven and fivesyllables respectively

ADOT wants the haikus to reinforce its public safety message urging drivers to avoid drivinginto or through a dust storm at all costs

ADOT encourages anyone and everyone to send in their haboob haikus through ADOTs

Arizonas monsoon season gets underway Saturday State transportation officials are urging drivers to be cautious during the summerstorms by reintroducing their dust storm awareness campaign

The public awareness program reminds motorists of what to do when trapped in a dust storm

ADOT says drivers should avoid driving in a dust storm and to be prepared to adjust travel plans when there are warnings of oneapproaching And if drivers find themselves in a dust storm state transportation officials say pull off the highway and park

ADOT also advises to turn off all you car lights keep your foot off the break pedal and stay inside the vehicle while the dust stormpasses

PHOENIX (AP) -- State transportation officials are reactivating apublic awareness campaign as the threat of dangerous dust stormsincreases with the summer monsoon The Department of Transportation says motorists should avoiddriving into dust storms in the first place by planning ahead andbeing prepared to change travel plans The driver-safety campaign advises motorists who find themselvesin a dust storm to pull off the highway and park in a safe place offthe pavement Other recommendations include turn off all lights keeping your footoff the brake and staying in the vehicle while waiting for the stormto pass

It is that time of year when dust storms take over the Valleyso to help spread the word about dust storm safety Arizonas Department ofTransportation has launched their second Haboob Haiku Challenge

For the second year ADOT is asking peopleto get creative and submit their haboobhaiku to ADOTs social media sitesADOT launched their Pull Aside Stay Alivedust storm campaign Monday as part oftheir Arizona Monsoon Awareness Week

Last year more than 600 haboob haikuswere submitted and featured worldwide The haikus are used to help reminddrivers about the dangers of the giant dust storms along with the monsoonstorms

You can submit your Haboob Haiku on ADOTs twitter page usingHaboobHaiku ADOTs Facebook page or ADOTs blog ADOT is using the

PHOENIX ndash As part of the Arizona Department of Transportationrsquos efforts to spread the word about dust stormsafety the agency is once again asking people to channel their inner poets and send in their haboob haikus

ldquoHaboob Haiku Year Twordquo is now underway through ADOTrsquos social media sites ADOT first issued the ldquoHaboobHaiku Challengerdquo last year as part of its ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo dust storm awareness campaign The challengewas such a smashing success that worldwide media featured some of the 600 haiku submissions

A haiku is a form of structured Japanese poetry thatfollows the traditional rules of three lines of five sevenand five syllables respectively The haikus aredesigned to reinforce ADOTrsquos public safety message

PHOENIX - The monsoon season officially kicks off Saturday andthat means well probably be seeing dust storms in the next fewweeks

These storms can be deadly if youre out in your car when they hit

Being on the road when a dust storm hits is not a safe place to be Visibility can get so low you cant see the hood of your car Thatswhy the Arizona Department of Transportation is warning drivers tostay off the road if you can during a dust storm

A blinding dust storm caused a 30 car pileup along the Interstate 10near Picacho Peak in October 2011 leaving a Texas man dead inthe chain reaction crash

You know its hard to predict -- we dont know what kind of asummer were going to have said ADOTs Doug Nintzel We justwant drivers to be ready

Olga Torres got caught in a dust storm on I-10 last monsoon seasonwith her children in the car

I stayed inside the car and just pulled over she said Very hardto see

If you do find yourself driving in the middle of a dust storm the firstthing to do is to look around your car Check your mirrors to makesure there are no other vehicles right around you Then slow downand pull off to the side of the road And not just onto the shoulder --all the way off the pavement

Then turn off your lights so other cars dont try to follow you Thatswhat causes pileups

Drivers need to take this seriously -- its not just something that yousay -- oh it will happen to somebody else These things do happenand you have to be ready said Nintzel

ADOT has a video and some things you will want to keep in mind if you do find yourself out on theroads during a dust storm Its a good idea to look at it even if youve lived here for a while

The main thing though if you know a dust storm is popping up and you can stay off the roads -thats the best idea of all

While most of us delight in thesoaking rains that are synonymouswith the monsoon the season is also full of severe weather dangers thatcan damage property and threaten the safety of Arizonans said WendySmith-Reeve director of the Arizona Division of Emergency Management

Gov Jan Brewer proclaimed June 9-14 Moonsoon Awareness Week inArizona which is a week before the official beginning of monsoon seasonLasting until late September it consists of afternoon thunderstormsproducing lightning high winds and heavy rains It also includes weatherdangers like flash flooding or dust storms

Heres how you can get ready for Arizonas most notorious naturaldisaster

At home make sure you have enough food water and emergencysupplies on hand to last 72 hours in case the power goes out Flashlightsshould have extra batteries and first aid supplies should be readilyavailable

Items that can blow away in the wind such as outdoor fixtures furnitureand small trees should be secured

Also be sure to review your homeowners policy According to AAAstandard ones do not typically have flood coverage

On the road take particular caution when you see a dust stormapproaching The best thing to do is avoid driving into a wall of dustInstead pull to the side of the road as quickly as possible turn off yourlights and wait it out

The Arizona Department of Transportation has a message for motorists who think they can drive head-on into a duststorm ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo

Following the successful launch of last yearrsquos public awareness campaign ADOT is intensifying its efforts to educatedrivers about the threat of dust storms as monsoon season officially begins in Arizona on June 15th ADOT along withthe Governorrsquos Office of Highway Safety the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the National Weather Servicehas reactivated its ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo public awareness campaign including television and radio public-educationannouncements to educate drivers about what to do (and what not to do) when they encounter dust storms

ADOTrsquos mission is to provide valuable information to drivers before they get caught in a low-visibility dust storm Thisyear the agencyrsquos top recommendation is to avoid driving into a wall of dust at all costs

ldquoDriving into a dust storm is dangerous and oftentimes it can be avoided This is a message that canrsquot be emphasizedenoughrdquo said ADOT Director John Halikowski ldquoDuring monsoon season drivers and their passengers must do theirpart by planning ahead if there are threats of a dust storm Itrsquos better to alter travel plans than to attempt to drivethrough dangerous conditions But if yoursquore on the road and a dust storm suddenly appears near you pull off thehighway as quickly and safely as possible Do not drive through a dust storm Itrsquos a risk you donrsquot have to take andremember to never drive distractedrdquo

Dust storms develop quickly and dust-related crashes can occur particularly along the Interstate 10 corridor betweenPhoenix and Tucson To advise drivers of approaching storms ADOT employs a range of strategies mdash includingelectronic highway message boards social and traditional media communication with ADOT staff and lawenforcement officers in the field television and radio advertising and close coordination with partnering agencies mdashto keep information flowing to motorists

Dust storms form when strong winds of up to 60mph kick up sand and debris creating a wall of dustas high as several thousand feet

Many people are killed on the highway because either theydont pull off to the side or if they do theyleave their foot on the brake said Kirk Astroth the associate dean of the University of Arizona College ofAgriculture and Life Sciences

Astroth who took inspiration from similar apps warning about snow storms developed an app to alertmotorists about pending dust storms

Dustin Krugel public information officer at the Arizona Department of Transportation said the appalongside other tools such as the ADOT twitter feed overhead signs on the freeway the 511 dial upsystem and social media outlets are ways drivers can find out about dust storms before hitting the road

Our top recommendation is to avoid getting caught in one of those dust storms Krugel said However alot of these dust storms seem to strike out of nowhere

For those who do get caught in a dust storm Krugel recommended pulling off the paved roadway comingto a complete stop and turning off all of the lights This prevents other motorists from thinking the car isstill moving and possibly hitting it

The Pull Aside Stay Alive public awareness campaign educates drivers about what to do - andwhat not to do - if drivers encounter dust storms

Driving into a dust storm is dangerous and oftentimes it can be avoided ADOT Director JohnHalikowski said in a news release During monsoon season drivers and their passengers mustdo their part by planning ahead if there are threats of a dust storm Its better to alter travel plansthan to attempt to drive through dangerous conditions But if youre on the road and a dust stormsuddenly appears near you pull off the highway as quickly and safely as possible Do not drivethrough a dust storm

Haboob Haiku Challenge

Someone over at ADOT was feeling whimsical when thinking of ways to spread the word aboutsummer driving hazards

For the second year the department has launched its Haboob Haiku Challenge encouragingpoets - and motorists - to create vivid messages in just 17 syllables to remind everyone about thedangers of driving during dust storms

Its part of the agencys Pull Aside Stay Alive campaign

The Japanese-style poems should follow the traditional rules of three lines of five seven and fivesyllables respectively

Throughout the summer ADOT will be accepting submissions on its social media sites Facebookthe ADOT blog and Twitter with the hashtag HaboobHaiku

Last year ADOT received 600 submissions including these favorites

As part of the Arizona Department ofTransportationrsquos efforts to spread the word aboutdust storm safety the agency is once again askingpeople to channel their inner poets and send in theirhaboob haikus

Haboob Haiku Year Two is underway throughADOTrsquos social media sites

ADOT first issued the Haboob Haiku Challenge lastyear as part of its ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo duststorm awareness campaign The challenge was sucha smashing success worldwide media featured someof the 600 haiku submissions

The ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo campaign re-launchedTuesday as part of Arizona Monsoon AwarenessWeek The campaign runs through the summer reminding drivers about the dangers of dust storms andmonsoon storms

A haiku is a form of structured Japanese poetry that follows the traditional rules of three lines of five sevenand five syllables respectively The haikus are designed to reinforce ADOTrsquos public safety message urgingdrivers to avoid driving into or through a dust storm at all costs Drivers are instead encouraged to pull offthe roadway and wait out a dust storm rather than trying to drive with reduced or zero visibility

This year everyone is encouraged to send in their haboob haikus to the following ADOT social media sites

With the monsoon season officially beginningtomorrow June 15 Arizonans should be aware of thepossible dangers the monsoon can bring both on theroad and at home Thunderstorms flash floods heavyrain

zero-visibility haboobs are all severe weather thatwill be seen during the next couple of months

For the second year in a row the Arizona Departmentof Transportation (ADOT) has teamed up with theGovernorrsquos Office of Highway Safety the ArizonaDepartment of Public Safety and the NationalWeather Service for their campaign ldquoPull Aside StayAliverdquo Together they seek to educate Arizona driverson the dangers of being caught in a dust storm andon staying safe in dangerous driving conditions

Turning off all lights while pulling to the side of theroad is vital in avoiding accidents

ldquoDrivers tend to see the taillights and follow the lightand end up running into the back of the vehiclesrdquo

Dust storms and other monsoon-related weathercan happen unexpectedly and motorists areencouraged to wait out the storms for their ownsafety

Remember that when there is a reported ldquoDustStorm Watchrdquo this means the conditions are ideal fora dust storm to form however when there is a ldquoDustStorm Warningrdquo a dust storm is imminent anddrivers should attempt to get off the road as soon aspossible

Flash floods can also cause great damage both toyou and your vehicle Arizonarsquos section 28-910 of theArizona Revised Statutes known as the ldquoStupidMotorist Lawrdquo states that motorists who decide tocross any barricade during flooding and whobecome stranded can be billed up to $2000 for theemergency services

Even if you believe your vehicle can make it acrosssafely it is better to avoid flooded streets andwashes as the fast moving current can potentiallyoverpower your vehicle

What many Arizonans donrsquot consider is the possibilityof their homes flooding AAA insurance encourageshomeowners to ldquoreview your homeownerrsquos policyEnsure they are protected against storm damageincluding a flood Standard homeownerrsquos policies donot have flood coveragerdquo

Heavy rain can cause major damage if the waterlevels get high enough Personal belongings such

as electronics furniture and your homersquos infrastructure can be damaged and without flood coverage thedamage will not be covered by your insurance

ldquoWhen it comes to flood insurance talk to your agent and check if you are in a specific high risk area sincethese can vary from specific areas and neighborhoodsrdquo said John Candaso from AAA

He said you can check if your Ahwatukee home is in a flood area by visiting floodsmartgov and filling out theflood risk profile

Arizona motorists will be notified of any dangerous weather this season via electronic highway boards newsand television stations and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook ADOT also encouragesdrivers to spread the word on the importance of pulling over while caught in bad weather The ldquoHaboob HaikuChallengerdquo will be back this year on Twitter where users are encouraged to write their own Haiku about stayingsafe this monsoon season Use the hashtag HaboobHaiku for the chance to be retweeted by ArizonaDOTso others can view your poetry

Monsoon driving tips from ADOT

The Arizona Department of Transportation has a message for motorists who think they can recklessly drive head-on into a dust storm ldquoPull Aside Stay Aliverdquo

Following the successful launch of last yearrsquos public awareness campaign ADOT is intensifying its efforts toeducate drivers about the threat of dust storms as monsoon season officially begins in Arizona on June 15

ADOT along with the Governorrsquos Office of HighwaySafety the Arizona Department of Public Safety andthe National Weather Service has reactivated its ldquoPull

ldquoItrsquos better to alter travel plans than to attempt to drive through dangerous conditions But if yoursquore on the roadand a dust storm suddenly appears near you pull off the highway as quickly and safely as possible Do not drivethrough a dust storm Itrsquos a risk you donrsquot have to take and remember to never drive distractedrdquo

Dust storms develop quickly and dust-related crashes can occur particularly along the Interstate 10 corridorbetween Phoenix and Tucson To advise drivers of approaching storms ADOT employs a range of strategies mdashincluding electronic highway message boards social and traditional media communication with ADOT staffand law enforcement officers in the field television and radio advertising and close coordination with partneringagencies mdash to keep information flowing to motorists

ADOT along with its partnering agencies has established wwwPullAsideStayAliveorg to showcase the public-education video and to reinforce driver safety messages The website also includes a tip sheet which ADOTencourages drivers to print and keep handy in their vehicle

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm

If you encounter a dust storm check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front back and to the side) andbegin slowing down

Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway mdash do it as soon as possibleCompletely exit the highway if you can

Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane look for a safe place to pull completely off the pavedportion of the roadway

Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where othervehicles may travel

Turn off all vehicle lights including your emergency flashers

Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake

Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass

Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel atreduced speeds

A driverrsquos alertness and safe driving ability are always the top factors in preventing crashes

Deputy Suitt says if there is water on the road your best bet is to takeanother route Especially at night you cant tell how deep that water is so why notavoid it all together Suitt says

If you cant find another way pull over to the side of the road until the storm subsidesTurn off your lights because you dont want anyone else to come up behind youthinking youre still driving Suitt says

The same advice goes for drivers who find themselves in the middle of a dust stormalong I-10 When you see a wall of dust approaching that is the time to take actionand pull off to the side of the roadway says Dustin Krugel of ADOT

PHOENIX - In an effort to promote safety during dustand monsoon storms the Arizona Department ofTransportation is calling all poetry enthusiasts tosubmit haboob haikus

ADOT began the Haboob Haiku Challenge last yearto promote their Pull Aside Stay Alive campaignwhich received 600 submissions

The campaign re-launched yesterday and willcontinue through the summer
