Letter from the Chairman

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your interest in the AAPG Foundation. The AAPG Foundation is a strong support to this generation. The

following pages give you an overview of the programs and funds that the AAPG Foundation currently supports. The Board of Trustees also approves projects and proposals for funding which fulfill its mission – to support educational, charitable and scientific activities that benefit the geologic profession and the general public. This opportunity is made available by a bequest from L. Austin Weeks. To see a list of projects and programs funded, go online to http://foundation.aapg.org/pastprogramsupport.cfm.

Thanks to many dedicated contributors, the AAPG Foundation’s

operating fund now covers the entire cost of operating the AAPG Foundation. That means that 100% of your gift goes directly toward the purpose you designate without the need to set aside a portion to cover administrative or overhead costs.

As a thank you for your donation, your name will appear in an

upcoming edition of the Explorer magazine. Please take this opportunity to send in your gift or pledge in the

enclosed envelope. We’ll make sure your gift is directed to the fund that means the most to you. Gifts of over $25,000 are eligible for the establishment of endowments.

Sincerely,

William L. FisherChairman, AAPG Foundation

distinGUished LeCtUre fUndThe Distinguished Lecture

Fund was established to fund the Distinguished Lecture Program, which is the Association’s oldest and most popular program, reaching into affiliated societies and universities around the world. In addition to the distinguished lecturers supported by the general earnings of the fund, substantial contributions from companies and individuals support five distinguished lecturers each year whose tours are individually identified with the names of distinguished members being honored or memorialized – Roy Huffington, Dean A. McGee, J. Ben Carsey, Merrill Haas-Wallace Pratt, and Allan P. Bennison. The general topic and/or geographic area to be addressed by a Named Distinguished Lecturer may be determined by the donor.

e. f. reid diBBLee fUnd The E. F. Reid Dibblee Fund was established to help support

the Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. Center for Geology, which was created through the merger of the Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. Geological Foundation and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The Foundation has provided funding for the publication of up to 200 geological maps of central and southern California research by Thomas W. Dibblee, Jr. during his lifetime of fieldwork.

The late Eugene F. Reid was an avid supporter of the Dibblee mapping projects through generous donations to the Foundation. It was the Foundation Trustees’ desire to recognize Reid’s generosity by naming the fund accordingly. AAPG Bookstore offers 359 of the (more than) 400 Dibblee geological quadrangles.

e. f. reid sCoUtinG fUnd The E. F. Reid Scouting Fund supports the teaching of geology to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and youth in other organizations as determined by the Trustees of the Foundation. With support from the Foundation and input from AAPG members and Boy Scout staff, the current Boy Scout Geology Merit Badge

requirements and instructive materials were developed. Also, with AAPG Foundation sponsorship, AAPG members perform administrative and teaching functions at various local and national Boy Scout venues in connection with the Geology Merit Badge.

The fund began with a Leadership Gift by Eugene F. (Bud) Reid: petroleum geologist, AAPG Past President, AAPG Foundation Trustee, past member of the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Board (12 years), and past member of the Executive Committee (8 years) of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Further, he was active in planning and directing World Jamborees and was the BSA representative to many international Scouting committees.

GeneraL fUnd The General Fund exists for the discretionary use of Trusteesto support any activity which they deem worthy and is in accordwith the purposes for which the Foundation was established; i.e.,education, charitable, and scientific activities related to, or allied with the field of geology.

Gis-UdriL University sUBsCriPtion This new fund allows students at your alma mater to directly benefit from four generations of geoscientists’ scientific experiences and achievements. GIS-UDRIL is an expansive project that provides digital products and services to upstream petroleum students & researchers by preparing GIS-linked databases and atlases of georeferenced maps and other images.

The contest is an annual event between teams of geoscience graduate students and their respective faculties from various universities. Students compete to win scholarship funds for their institutions which are dedicated to petroleum geoscience education.

Grants-in-aid fUnd The Grants-in-Aid Fund provides financial support for research

to graduate students in geology and related earth sciences. The Named Grants-in-Aid have become an increasingly popular way for members to endow an annual grant in his/her name or in honor of/memory of a family member, respected colleague, organization or institution. The minimum amount needed to establish a $1,000 Named/Memorial Grant is currently $25,000. Funding which reaches $75,000 funds the highest awarded grants of $3,000.

hoLLand aWard of exCeLLenCe With an endowment established by David “Scotty” Holland, this cash award is given annually to a selected faculty member from the Holland School of Sciences and Math at Hardin-Simmons University.
