Morning Sessions 8:30 am Welcome and Continental Breakfast 9:00 am Session 1 Basics of Foundation Horsemanship on the Ground— An overview of techniques for handling and assessing a horse on the ground. Demonstration will include how to establish good working relationship with a new or unfamiliar horse. Horses of varying ages and temperaments will be used to highlight subtle ways your technique might change to adapt to each horse. Emphasis will be on safety and how to set up the horse for successful interaction with veterinarian and/or handler. Techniques shown will be practical and simple, requiring only a halter and lead rope as tools.
Presenter: Lynn Reardon: LOPE 10:30 am Session II Trailer Loading and Horsemanship— Many equine vet technicians find themselves in the position of assisting clients with loading or unloading a nervous or stressed horse at the vet clinic. This presentation will show how the basics of foundation groundwork are related to trailer loading. Demonstration will show how to work with anxious or reluc-tant horses to safely load and unload. Additionally, the presenter will explain how to best utilize a helper (such as the horse’s owner or another veterinary technician) in such situations – as well as how to handle trailer loading alone. A variety of horses will be used in the demonstration.

Afternoon Sessions 1:30 pm Session III Proper Jogging Techniques for Lameness Exams—How does good horsemanship help with lameness exams? In this session, the best ways to hold, lead off and jog a horse are presented by a seasoned equine veterinary technician and accomplished equestrian. Spe-cific topics to be covered include where to position the horse, how to deal with a nervous or green horse, correct departures into the jog and how to maintain the jog pace to assist veterinarian’s assessment of the horse. Multiple horses with different conformation and personalities will be used in the demonstration.
Presenter: Dominique LeBaron : Austin Equine & Associates
2:30 pm Session IV Special Demonstration: Reining and Horsemanship—How do these practical horsemanship techniques apply to under saddle work? JD Badertscher will demonstrate how the ground, trailer and jogging techniques relate to reining and good riding form. Understanding where to place the horse’s feet, how to create impulsion from the hindquarters and what lateral flexion to ask for are all key to producing good results under saddle. JD will do a reining demonstra-tion on both a seasoned competition horse and a green horse still in training – to highlight the differences that each type of horse requires in the application of the horsemanship techniques.
