GEOGRAPHY

The geography of morocco spans from the

Atlantic Ocean to mountainous areas to the

Sahara Desert. It is a Northern African

country, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean

and the Mediterranean Sea.

It is a mountainous land. The Atlas mountains

are mainly located in the centre and south of 

the country. The Rif mountains are located in

the north of the country. Both ranges aremainly inhabited by Berber people.

It is entirely a Nature Land covered with lush

river valleys, beautiful sandy coasts, vast

mountain ranges and wide expanses of desert.

CLIMATE

The climate in morocco is reliably dry

although small amount of rain do fall between

November and march. Temperature varies

considerably by season and locale.

Southern and southeastern desert regions

can reach extremely high temperatures

during the hot summer months, the higher 

altitudes of the mountains in summer 

evenings and freezing in winters.

Most travelers find the early summer months

to be the most comfortable time to visit, as

rain is not a threat and temperatures are

warm and pleasantly cool at nights.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The Sousse Massa Biological Reserve and the

Toubkal Biological Reserve are known for 

their large number of bird species. There are

more than 200 species.

Visitors can look for seeing

wadors,woodpeckers,spoonbills,flamingos

and few of them which are on the endangered

list.

Along the desert coasts visitors can find

ground squirrels, black headed bush shrikes,

gulls, tiger blues, golden jackals, Barbary

falcons, Spanish imperial eagles,

Mediterranean monk seal, barbary macaqueor the camels.

CULTURE

� In the political world, Morocco is referred to

as an Arab state and sometimes as an African

state. The majority of Morocco's population is

Arab by identity. At least a third of the

population speaks the Amazing language.

During the Islamic expansion, some Arabs

came to Morocco and settled in the flat

regions as Tadla and Doukkala. For example

there are groups called Charkawa andArbawa who settled in Morocco from Arabia.

The Charkawa claimed to be descended from

Umar ibn Al-Khattab, the second caliph of 

Islam.

� Morocco is a country of multi-

ethnic groups with a rich culture

and civilization. Through

Moroccan history, Morocco

hosted many people in addition to

the indigenous Berbers, coming

from both East (Phoenicians,

Jews and Arabs), South (Moorsand Sub-Saharan Africans) and

North (Romans and Vandals). All

of which have had an impact on

the social structure of Morocco. It

conceived many forms of beliefs,

from paganism, Judaism,

Christianity to Islam.

� Beef is the most commonly eaten red meat in

amb is preferred, but rarer thanksto its high cost. Poultry is also very common,

and the importance of seafood is increasing

or Bestilla), Tajine, Tanjia and Harira.

in Moroccan food.

to Morocco for thousands of years, many ingredients, likesaffron, mint, olives,oranges and lemons fromFez, are home-grown.

Structure of meals

� The midday meal is the main meal,except during the holy month

of Ramadan. A typical meal beginswith a series of hot and cold salads.

� Bread is eaten with every meal. Often,for a formal meal, a lamb or chicken

dish is next, followed by couscoustopped with meat and vegetables. 

� A cup of sweet mint tea usually endsthe meal. Moroccans usually eat withtheir hands and use bread as a utensil.

Deserts

� Seasonal fruits rather than cooked

desserts are served at the close of a meal. A common dessert is kaab el 

ghazi ("gazelle's horns"), a pastry stuffed

with almond paste and topped with sugar .

the month of Ramadan.

TOURISM IN MOROCCO is well developed,with a strong tourist industry focused on the

country's coast, culture, and history.

Most of Morocco's tourists are Canadian.

Morocco has been one of the most politicallystable countries in North Africa, which has

allowed tourism to develop. The Moroccan government created a Ministry

of Tourism in 1985.

� Morocco is relatively inexpensive becauseof the devaluation of the DIRHAM and theincrease of hotel prices in Spain.

� CITADEL OF CHELLAH GARDENS:Located inMorocco·s capital city, Rabat, the Chellah Gardens areexpertly landscaped to display hundreds of flowerswhich come into bloom in Morocco·s spring season.

� EL BAHIA PALACE: Located in Marrakech, thisrichly adorned building is a superb example of 19thcentury Eastern Architecture.
