Once home to emperors, the showpiece of a revolution and now – reinvented again – it is a happening 21st century global powerhouse. Although many of China’s bicycles have been replaced by cars, and the wave of modern architecture is astounding, the country still retains a stately, larger-than-life demeanor. This journey to China will begin in Shanghai, home to the blinking skyline of the city’s magnificent Pudong area, five star restaurants and avant-garde galleries. From here we travel to Central Sichuan and its capital, Chengdu, surrounded by dotted villages and forested mountains. Highlights of our stay include a visit to Sanxingdui Museum which houses recent archaeological treasures of great significance and Qingcheng Shan, a 2000 year old Taoist retreat mountain. We will also learn about Sichuan poetry and calligraphy before we flying to Kunming. Here, the group will enjoy some private meetings with local university faculty members before taking a train to Dali, stunningly situated at an altitude of 6,200 ft. between the mountains and Erhai Lake. This area is home to the Bai people, one of the country’s colorful ethnic minorities. We continue on to Lijiang, reminiscent of ancient China with it’s cobbled streets and ancient Ming and Qing dynasty houses. DAy 1 | April 13 | ShAnghAiEach traveler arriving on Weds. April 13th, at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport will be met and transferred to the J. W. Marriott Hotel Changfeng Park located much closer to Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport used for domestic flights. JW Marriott Hotel

DAy 2 | April 14 | ShAnghAi to ChengDuBreakfast is served at the hotel. By 8:30 a.m., meet up with fellow participants, Prof. and Mrs. Berninghausen and our national guide, Ms. Li in the breakfast area. The group will then fly to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province and a major metropolis in Southwest China. We will be transferred to the hotel by motor coach (please note: carrying or pulling your luggage a few blocks through pedestrian only area will be necessary). After checking in, we will set out on an orientation stroll through the surrounding area including a visit to the Wenshu Yuan Buddhist monastery noted for its gardens and tea houses. DAy 3 | April 15 | ChengDuA morning tour of Guanghan Sanxingdui Archaeological Site and Museum outside of Chengdu unveils fabulous and unprecedented bronze and gold artifacts dating back to 300-400 years BCE and the ancient Chinese Kingdom of Shu, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, discovered less than 30 years ago at this site. Our lunch at a local restaurant is followed by a visit to the many species of bamboo at the River Viewing Pavilion Park. We return to the hotel for free time in afternoon. This evening we will enjoy a performance of Sichuan Chinese “opera” (the local version of Chinese musical theater tradition including slapstick, gymnastics, elaborate face painting, pantomime, stylized gestures, loud percussion and traditional Chinese legends.) DAy 4 | April 16 | ChengDuToday’s excursions include travel out to the Dujiangyan Flood Control and Irrigation system, one of the marvels of ancient Chinese engineering dating from 2300 years ago. We will also schedule a visit to the nearby Panda Research Center, home to the famous giant and red pandas. Time and weather permitting, we might try to visit the Taoist sacred mountain zone of Mt. Qingcheng. Dinner is on your own tonight. Buddha Zen Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch)

DAy 5 / April 17 | ChengDu to Kunming, yunnAn provinCeEnjoy some free time this morning to visit a Sunday open-air bazaar. Later we will check out of our hotel and visit the site of the thatched cottage of one of China’s greatest poets, the Tang dynasty 8th century poet Du Fu. After lunch our flight departs for Kunming, Yunnan’s capital city known as the “City of Eternal Spring.” We will check into the hotel, before setting out on an orientation walk along the lake at sunset. Later this evening, after dinner we might perhaps find groups of students practicing their English in the Sunday evening informal “English Corner” along the lake shore across from our hotel. DAy 6 | April 18 | KunmingWe’ll start the day with a visit to Kunming’s famous zoo and the Golden Temple. Located atop “Singing Phoenix” Hill, this temple is the home to the Taoist Temple Taihe, the largest copper-coated temple in China, also known as the Tongwa Temple (Bronze Tile Temple). Later in the afternoon, we’ll visit the campus of Yunnan University, the host institution of one of the three Middlebury Schools in China, and meet with some current Middlebury juniors studying Chinese in Kunming and with a few faculty members from Yunnan U. to learn more about current issues in China’s higher education reforms. DAy 7 | April 19 | Kunming to Xizhou outSiDe of DAli, yunnAnAfter a leisurely free morning and breakfast we depart midday by local train to Dali, a scenic old city in the area of the Bai People national ethnic minority. Upon arrival in the late afternoon we will transfer to the small lakeside town of Xizhou and the Sky Valley Hotel. Dali was once the most important city in what is now Yunnan Province. From the 7th to 13th century it was the Nanzhao Kingdom. After dinner, we may join some Bai traditional musicians for some evening entertainment. Sky Valley Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAy 8 | April 20 | Xizhou neAr DAliThe day will be spent exploring Xizhou and learning more about the culture and architecture of the Bai people who are said to have settled here more than 3000 years ago. Our morning excursion will feature a walking tour of Xizhou followed by lunch in a local family residence. In the afternoon, we will meet with a local expert on Bai culture to learn more about this town on the shores of Lake Erhai. Dinner on one’s own in a Xizhou restaurant. DAy 9 | April 21 | Xizhou, DAliAfter breakfast at Linden Center, we drive back into Dali City and visit the justly famous Three Tower White Pagodas so often photographed as a symbol of old Yunnan. Today’s highlight will be the start of the Third Lunar Month street festival in Dali, one of the largest festivals in Yunnan. Lunch is on one’s own in Dali. Sky Valley Hotel (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAy 10 | April 22 | Xizhou to lijiAng, yunnAnToday’s motor coach ride will take us from Xizhou to Shaxi old town, one of the stops along the famous “tea horse road” and a visit to nearby Shibaoshan (Stone Treasure Mountain) where we will see ancient stone Buddhist statuary. We continue our journey through mountains to the old trading center of Lijiang. Time and weather permitting, we will make a brief stop at Tiger Leaping Gorge north of Lijiang, one of the deepest gorges in China. BuddhaZen Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAy 11 | April 23 | lijiAng to ShAnghAiSome free time in morning, then departure for Lijiang Airport to catch flight to Shanghai where we’ll be staying at the luxurious Art Deco period Ruijing Inter-Continental Hotel and Gardens on the edge of the charming district of the former French Concession. Orientation walk to the nearby Xintiandi area after checking in to hotel. Intercontinental Shanghai Ruijin Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

DAy 12 | April 24 | ShAnghAi The morning will be dedicated to the spectacular Shanghai Museum where one can follow the footsteps of Chinese history. It is considered one of the one of the greatest art museums anywhere in Asia. Afternoon at leisure. We will gather again this evening prior to dinner for some cocktails, discussions and dinner in a private dining venue. DAy 13 | April 25 | ShAnghAi One of China’s bullet trains takes us to Hangzhou with its fabled West Lake, eulogized by poets and beloved by emperors. Upon arrival we will visit the famous Lingying Chan Temple followed by a picnic lunch that will be served in the garden of the Guo Zhuang Residence. DAy 14 | April 26 | ShAnghAiA good part of the morning will be highlighted to exploring and learning more about the city’s fascinating and fast growing art scene. We will visit some of the most important galleries on Moganshan Road before heading to the Jiaoda Xujiahui old campus site for lunch. From here we will drive to the French Concession area for a stroll and will arrive back at the hotel in time to freshen up before having our farewell dinner in a private room at the Hungpu Club. DAy 15 | April | 27 Travelers will be transferred back to the airport. (Breakfast)

John Berninghausen, Accompanying Scholar

Professor Emeritus of Chinese Language and Literature,

John Berninghausen, joined the Middlebury faculty in 1976

to establish a new department of Chinese Language and

Literature that rather quickly gained recognition as one of

the strongest Chinese language programs in North America.

He also served the College as Dean of the Summer Intensive

Chinese School, Chair of East Asian Studies, Chair of Foreign

Languages Division, Acting Director of all the Language Schools

and Schools Abroad and a few years as Faculty Associate in

Admissions. Professor Berninghausen and his wife Alice have

previously led three highly successful Middlebury Alumni trips

to China. After 35 years at Middlebury College, he retired in

2011 but maintains close connections to many Middlebury

undergrads to whom he served as advisor and mentor. We are

delighted that his wife, Alice will also be joining us on this tour.
