Mr. Gor- man was born on May 9, 1926 in Memphis, Ten- nessee. Mr. Gorman is sur- vived by his loving wife of 58 years, Emma Jane; five children: John P. Gorman, Jr. (Myrna), Margaret Mahoney (Pat), Jane Dear (Steven), Clyde Gorman (Mary Anne) and Robert Gorman (Carlton); thir- teen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Gorman was a veteran of World War II hav- ing served in the U.S. Army for 2 years in Germa- ny. He was a faithful member of Brownsville Bap- tist Church for 45 years and an active member of Gideons International. He loved his Lord Jesus, was a faithful witness, and lived a life that emulat- ed Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Evange- lism, family and giving were his passions, and he took every opportunity to share Jesus Christ and meet the physical needs of those around him. Funeral services for Mr. Gorman will be con- ducted Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 10:30 AM in Brownsville Baptist Church under the direction of Lea and Simmons Funeral Home. Burial will fol- low in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation for the Gor- man family will be Friday, June 18, 2010 from 5 to 8 PM in the Brownsville Baptist Church. Wallace Date of Death – June 12, 2010 Funeral services for Jack F. Wallace, 82, were held Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Lea and Simmons Funeral Home, under the joint direction of Lea and Simmons Funeral Home and Ar- rington Funeral Direc- tors. Burial followed in Brownsville Memorial Gardens. Jack went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 12, 2010 at Jack- son-Madison County General Hospital. He was born in Moulton, Alabama on Novem- ber 11, 1927 the son of the late Thomas F. Wallace and the late Mildred Sivley Wallace. Jack was pre- ceeded in death by his brother: Ray F. Wallace; and granddaughter: Hayden Marie Wallace. Mr. Wallace graduated from Tech High School in Memphis, Tennessee, and later joined the U.S. Coast Guard serving in World War II. After his service in the Coast Guard he attended Memphis State University and was on the track, baseball, and golf teams. He retired from the Memphis Po- lice Department in 1975 after 24 years of service where he served as Deputy Police Chief. Jack had an outstanding career with the Police Department, twice named as one of the Top Ten Police officers in the nation and received a letter of congratulations from President Richard Nixon of The United States. He graduated from the FBI National Academy; he served as Director of Security for 15 years for Gold- smith’s Department Stores; and the last 22 years he worked as an investigator with David Horton and Associates, working closely with many attorneys in Jackson, Tennessee and the surrounding area. Jack was a member of the Brownsville Country Club where golf was his passion. He won many tournaments including the Danny Thomas Mem- phis Classic Pro-Am, the Brownsville Country Club Championship, and Brownsville Country Club Senior Championship. Jack also bowled for the city of Memphis for many years representing the Memphis Police Department. He was a mem- ber of Brownsville Baptist Church where he served on the usher and security committees. He is survived by his wife: Shirley Sullivan Wal- lace of Brownsville, Tennessee; one son: Lee Wal- lace of Kansas City, Kansas: two daughters: Diane Wallace Swan of Collierville, Tennessee and Amy Wallace Todd of Jackson, TN; one brother: Bill Wal- lace of Memphis, Tennessee; and seven grandchil- dren. Those serving as pallbearers will be E. A. Sul- livan, Lowery Kirk, Roy McCage, Joe McCool, George Chapman, Gerald Rhea, P. J. Angotti and Don Willie. June 17, 2010 June 20, 1980 Service Station shootout matches pistol-shotgun Robert Waggener says he was apprehensive when he finished check- ing up and securing the station’s money during closing time. His wife Rel- ma, was with him. After locking the front door the Apco Self-Serve Station on Grand Avenue, Mrs. Waggener went to her car and parked near the office of the motel next door, while Robert turned left to get into his pickup truck. It was parked next to the station, but was on the motel side of the building. As usual, he had his .38 revolver in his hand and just as he reached for the door of his truck, he heard a command and shot from the rear of the station. He ran to the rear of the truck and when the man and shotgun ap- peared around the cor- ner, he fired at the him. In all, Waggener fired two times and the men (there were two of them) fired four times. Waggener’s truck was hit in the left front fender and twice in the windshield. The open window permitted the shot to damage the glass behind the driver’s seat. The two men ran after Waggener returned their fire. City Board asked to construct additional playgrounds The city Board of May- or and Aldermen met Thursday, June 12, due to the City election’s falling on Tuesday, the regular meeting date. Newly elected Dean Pettigrew, was a visitor at the session. A group of citizens of the JONAH or- ganization were present. Harold Barker spokes- man, requested that the city construct additional playgrounds. He sug- gested the purchase of 20 acres for the plan of build- ing one each year for four years. Others of the group complained of drainage problems at times in the Fairgrounds and Green- wood Street area. Chamber names Banks President Webb Banks, local fur- niture dealer, is the new president of the Browns- ville Area Chamber of Commerce. A retired Air force officer, Mr. Banks will be assisted by Joe Gibbs and Carlton Veirs, vice president. New directors named were: Jimmy Halbrook, Louis Stuart, Carl Pot- ter, Dean Pettigrew, Jack Fletcher, Jack Brummett Jr., Arthur Ellis, George Williams, Jane Norris, Dan Jackson and Bradley Cunningham. These new directors join the board with the present directors: Jack Smith, David Duke, Lee Brummett, Owen Bur- greess, Larry Hill and Earl Rice. June 21, 1990 Mayor says goodbye Brownsville Mayor Joe Taylor bid farewell to fel- low city board members, after a routine meeting of the board, lasting less than 45 minutes, Taylor, who is retiring, has served as mayor of Brownsville since 1974. “I’ve enjoyed it…it’s been a pleasure,” he told Aldermen Johnnie Coo- per, Dean Pettigrew, and Mayor-elect Jimmy Hal- brook. Mayor Taylor told board members that a special meeting of the board was scheduled for July 3 at 9 a.m. At that meeting Judge Lyle Reid will swear in Halbrook, who beat three other can- didates in the recent city election to the mayor’s position. Train-Truck Wreck kills three Three veteran employ- ees of CSX Railroad died in a fiery crash Tuesday morning when their westbound train struck a tractor-trailer truck as it crossed the track on the Dupree Bypass in Browns- ville. Acid fumes and smoke filled the air around the crash scene where numer- ous firefighters fell vic- tim to heat and exhaus- tion from battling the fire caused by the train’s im- pact into the truck’s alco- hol-laden tank. Witnesses on their way to work said the 8 a.m. crash ignited the tanker truck’s load of 2-Ethyl- hexanol instantly. The three men killed were riding in the front engine of the four-engine train. Another CSX employee, riding in the third engine, wasn’t hurt. The driver of the tractor-trailer truck escaped injury when the impact tore his trailer from the tractor he was driving.

Mr. John Peticolas Gorman, Sr. went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on June 15, 2010, while at his home in Brownsville, Tennessee surrounded by his wife and children. Mr. Gor-man was born on May 9, 1926 in Memphis, Ten-nessee.

Service Station shootout matches pistol-shotgun

Train-Truck Wreck kills three

Three veteran employ-ees of CSX Railroad died in a fi ery crash Tuesday morning when their westbound train struck a tractor-trailer truck as it crossed the track on the Dupree Bypass in Browns-ville.
