Entrepreneurial Spiriten·tre·pre·neur; A person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.

I would like to tell you about a special entrepreneur and what she taught me. I hope this story inspires you in some way.

I want to tell you about Ramona M. Carpenter, born on a small ranch in Galisteo, NM as Ramona M. Anaya. The time frame is the 1930’s. Back in those days there were cows, goats, lamb, chickens, and veggies from your own garden. You made your own cheese, stole the morning eggs and had a good early morning run from the mad hens in the hen house. In those days you had lots of kids to help you with the chores and the running of the ranch,

there was a lot to living. The people in that small town were living the American Dream; a good but hard life and all the freedom and opportunity they could muster. Ramona was taught a good work ethic. Work was not something you dreaded, it was a part of life; like eating, laughing, or sleeping. Everyone worked and everyone got up early, and everyone was proud of his or her daily accomplishments.

As time went on; Ramona’s Father Jose wanted a better life for his family and took a city job in the town of Santa Fe where he built his house with calloused hands, family labor, a lot of hard work and his team called it home.

Ramona went through school like her brothers and sisters and learned the ways of the evolv-ing world. She yearned for “the Good Life” as they called it then and had jobs and worked to buy the things she aspired to have on her own. After high scool, she met a Gringo, fell in love, had kids, and commenced living her American Dream. Though Ramona worked a series of different jobs, she longed for a business of her own and with the help of her husband and some inexpensive family labor, built a janitorial business. The business grew and was well known and after a few years of cleaning other people’s toilets this business no longer appealed to Ramona. She wanted her own shop and desired to elevate her vocation to some-thing more fulfilling. She loved flowers and plants so the idea was sold, start a flower shop.

Ramona went to school, learned the business, became a florist and never looked back. She built the business and the family all worked and helped out. With long hours and the spirit of a true entrepreneur, 27 years went by and many Christmases were happily realized. She and her family did not want and had a good life.

As the song goes by Zak Brown, “Take it all in, It’s a game we can’t win, Enjoy the ride”. Ramona left a legacy of entrepreneurial spirit, a great work ethic, and pride and honor in ones accomplishments. She managed her enterprise, grew it, lived the dream, and gave it considerable initiative, though there was a lot of risk!

Life is short and we all need to work and enjoy the fruits of our labor, our family, and the time we are blessed with on this wonderful planet.

I encourage you all to continue to foster that entrepreneurial spirit and enjoy the ride!

Until I meet you at one of the trade shows and shake your hand, kindly give me a call if there is anything I can do to help you grow your business!

Thank you for your continued support, Kim Carpenter

Announcements & ReleasesFahey Machinery has a new member to their sales and management team, Thomas J. Hatfield (“T.J.”)

Fahey Machinery has a new member to their sales and management team, Thomas J. Hatfield (“T.J.”). T.J. comes to Fahey Machinery with over 15 years of experience in the machine tool industry and over 5 years of experience as Regional Sales Manager of the western US for a manufacturer based out of northern Michigan.

T.J. is a 4th generation machine tool dealer, literally growing up

“in the business”. His first job out of high school was clean-ing and mechanical servicing of used machines purchased in his father’s used machinery dealership. T.J. has previously worked at C.F. Woodbury, F.P. Miller Inc., and most recently as Regional Sales Manager at IMI, Inc. T.J. has experience with start-up, training, writing CNC programs and after the

sale servicing of most types of metal fabrication equipment. He is especially proficient in Press Brakes, Punching and thermal cutting processes. In fact for a 6 month time period immediately after 9/11, T.J. helped out a customer by running their Trumpf CNC Punch and Trumpf CNC Brake during their 2nd shift, giving him not only machine knowledge, but operator and manager of a fab-shop.

T.J. will be responsible for giving customers in Washington and Northern Idaho new or used machinery at a fair price, with impec-cable service that will in turn help grow and expand the customer’s capabilities and business.

All World Machinery Taking Spindle Repair Accessories to a Whole New Level!

All World Machinery Supply is changing the way machine tool companies source their spindle repair parts accessories. With a 100

percent commitment to personal customer service and the “one stop shop” convenience for spindle repair parts and accessories, the industry is taking notice.

National Sales Manager Rich Koepp puts it simply: “For years, our company has been supplying bearings, seals, hydraulics, belts and any and everything having to do with machine tool repair to thousands of customers across the country. Through experience and education of the industry, we realized we can truly offer our customers a unique service for particular facets of our customers’ needs.”

Koepp adds: “We realized if we are helping so many customers with the bearings and o-rings for their spindle repairs, why not take it to another level for them?” Today, All World Machinery sources thou-sands of parts each month for their customers spindle repair needs.

The days of simply supplying a bearing here, an o-ring there, are over. Says Koepp: “we supply many of our customers with their disc springs for the draw bar repair as a compliment to what we offer for spindle repair. Furthermore, many times our customers will send us their oil chilling units for inspection while their spindle is out for repair. Many customers never realized that the oil chiller can be the cause of spindle failure in the first place. Whether it is proximity sensors, bearing grease, tool eye sensors, seals, lubrication accessories, precision locknuts or that high speed ceramic bearing, it’s a win-win lineup for all of our customers.” WWW.allworld-machinerysupply.com

Delcam to launch new milling options in FeatureCAM at IMTS

Delcam will launch the 2013 release of its FeatureCAM feature-based CAM software on booth E-3222 at the IMTS exhibition to be held in Chicago from 10th to 15th September. This will offer a new series of options for three-axis milling and enhancements in five-axis machining, plus improvements in the turning and mill-turn modules.

FeatureCAM was the world’s first feature-based programming software when it was launched in 1995. Constant development since then has ensured that the system has retained its leadership in programming speed and ease of use, while an increased range of strategies has been added to provide more efficient toolpaths giving greater productivity on a wider range of machines.

The main change to the 2013 FeatureCAM product family has been the introduction of three levels of 3D machining functionality. Fea-tureMILL 3D Lite offers single-surface machining with a basic range of strategies and so provides an introductory product for companies moving into 3D machining for the first time.

FeatureMILL 3D MX provides a greater number of strategies, includ-ing spiral finishing, flowline finishing and rotary machining, support

Page 7: A2Z Metalworker NW Edition Aug Sept 2012

for multiple-surface machining and automated feature recognition. It is aimed at companies with conventional machine tools and those that are machining softer materials.

FeatureMILL HSM also contains all of the options for rest machin-ing, such as pencil machining and corner clearance, and high-speed machining, including trochoidal machining and Delcam’s patented Race Line Machining. It maximizes the benefits of any invest-ment in high-speed mills with strategies that maximize machine productivity while protecting the part, machine and cutter from excessive wear.

FeatureCAM HSM also includes a number of new strategies. Step cutting has been added within area clearance to remove large ter-races that can be left on the part when using deeper roughing cuts. FeatureCAM will now produce extra toolpaths that step back up the terrace with the existing large tool, adding extra cuts at intermediate levels. This results in more material being removed, using the same tool within the same toolpath.

Automatic splitting of finishing between steep and shallow areas of the part has been available in FeatureCAM for a number of releases. This option has been enhanced with the ability to use the scallop height to control the stepover. Using this value rather than setting a constant stepover distance gives better control of the surface finish.

Both roughing and finishing strategies now incorporate an “area filter” to remove small enclosed pockets within the part from the toolpath. Any attempt to cut these areas risks damage to the tool, even though it is mathematically possible to remove the material.

New five-axis strategies available in FeatureCAM 2013 include flow-line machining between two curves, pencil machining and corner re-machining. These options for simultaneous five-axis machining allow a better surface finish to be achieved as well as ensuring access to more areas within the part in a single set-up.

New options have also been added to give smoother five-axis machining. A new look-ahead capability will remove any sudden tool-axis changes during automatic collision avoidance and, instead, ensure that a smooth transition takes place. In addition, Feature-CAM now offers the ability to smooth the Azimuth and Elevation axes independently and so remove excessive five-axis movement. These options stabilize the rotary axis movement by maintaining a fixed tool axis as far as possible, thus replacing constant five-axis movement with a series of 3+2-axis segments having full five-axis transitions between them.

A number of enhancements have been added to FeatureCAM’s turn-

ing and mill-turn modules. Definition of the initial stock and part alignment has been improved, making it more similar to the set-up process for milling, support has been added for semi-finish canned cycles and curves of revolution can now be recognised from STL models. A new method has also been introduced allowing b-axis rotary milling to be carried out on features that would otherwise require the use of excessively long cutters.

The options for multi-spindle, multi-turret machines have been improved by fully integrating part transfers into the FeatureCAM output. Simulation and post-processing of these operations is also supported. In addition, the handling of synchronization points has been enhanced to simplify the optimization of the machining sequence between the various elements of the machine.

For further information on Delcam’s FeatureCAM software, please contact: -Peter Dickin, Marketing Manager, Direct phone: 0121 683 1081, e-mail: [email protected]

facturing costs down.

“The pressure is on machine shops in the western world to find faster, lower cost ways of achieving greater output and rel iable high-quality without incurring disproportionately higher costs. By investing in a MIDACO pallet changer, many of our customers in the US have retained work and prevented it from being outsourced to low-cost countries.”

The principal behind a MIDACO pallet-changer couldn’t be simpler. Instead of stopping a machine to load and unload parts, MIDACO systems provide an accurate and reliable means of loading or unloading one pallet while the other is being machined. “It’s not a new con-cept, but it’s still surprising how many companies continue to waste valuable machining time.

We’ve saved some customers tens of thousands of dollars. Not just in machine time, but also because we’ve saved them from having to buy addi-tional machines to achieve the desired output.” Cayley explains.

“Increasingly in the future, successful manufacturers will be the ones who learn to find time and cost savings in every aspect of their operations.”

MIDACO CORPORATION of Elk Grove Village, Illinois USA is pleased to show the A16SD Series of Servo Driven Automatic Pallet Systems for new and existing smaller Vertical Machining Centers, as well as a complete redesign of all systems to achieve faster pallet change times. With a pallet size ranging from 22” x 14” (558.8mm x 355.69mm) up to 27.5” x 16” (698.5 mm x 406.4mm) and a pallet change time of 6.5 SECONDS, this 16SD series is designed to deliver true productivity and labor savings for machine tool manufacturers looking to step up production in a lean economy.

According to company CEO, Mike Cayley Sr, MIDACO focused on designing a smaller, faster model Pallet Changer System to enhance the production of manufacturing com-panies. With the growing trend for OEM’s to source more of their precision-machined parts from low-cost regions such as the Far East, the American manufacturing industry has been hit particularly hard as more and more companies look overseas to keep manu-

Electronic Precision Specialties, Inc. Receives Nadcap Accreditation for Chemical ProcessingElectronic Precision Specialties, Inc. has received Nadcap accreditation for demonstrating their ongoing commit-ment to quality by satisfying customer requirements and industry specifica-tions. Achieving Nadcap accreditation is not easy: it is one of the ways in which the aerospace industry identifies those who excel at manufacturing quality product through superior special processes.

Companies, such as Electronic Precision Specialties, Inc., work hard to obtain this status and should be justifiably proud of it,” said Joe Pinto, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Performance Review Institute. “PRI is proud to support continual improvement in the aerospace industry by helping companies, such as Electronic Precision Specialties Inc., to become successful, and we look forward to continuing to assist the industry moving forward.”

“Electronic Precision Specialties, Inc. (aka EPSI) would like to ac-knowledge its employee associates for achieving Nadcap accreditation. In the past four years, EPSI has progressed from ISO 9001:2000, through the 2008 standard, and now has qualified for the Nadcap AC 7004 Aerospace Quality Standard. “We know there is no stronger center for aerospace than what we have in Washington state,” said Gov. Christine Gregoire.

In a conference call with reporters, Gregoire said the “competition is on” at the Farnborough Air Show, a major international aerospace trade show where Washington state has a booth.

“We have to make sure the rest of the world knows that. The back-to-back meetings that I will have over the next couple of days will ensure that global companies know the value and advantages of doing business in our state. That’s what we need to ensure the aerospace industry continues to grow here, and provide good, living-wage jobs.”

Gregoire, stressing the need for more aerospace workers in Washington, also announced an agreement between the state’s community colleges and Das-sault Systèmes, a company that makes 3D software used by Boeing.

Dassault Systèmes will provide the soft-ware to the state’s two-year colleges at a discounted price of $7.63 per license, instead of its typical $200-$350 price tag. Gregoire said the agreement will save community and technical colleges a “significant amount of money,” and provide training for students interested in aerospace careers.

“Now CATIA is going to be available to every community and technical college in Washington, includ-ing those that were previously unable to afford it,” said Mary Kaye Bredeson, executive director of the Center of Excellence. “It’s an important tool to prepare students for high-skill, high-wage jobs in aerospace.”

“Our community and technical colleges are knowledge-producers for the aerospace industry,” said Charlie Earl, executive director of the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. “This agreement means more students can take what they learn in the classroom directly into the workplace, without the need for exten-sive, on-the-job training.”

More than 50 aerospace companies and several aerospace con-sortiums representing more than 200 Washington aerospace busi-nesses are exhibiting at the Air Show highlighting Washington state, including our world-class aerospace training programs, its more

than 700 aerospace companies, and its more than 92,000 highly-skilled aerospace workers. What is an Apprenticeship Program in the Aerospace and Manufacturing Industries?

Aerospace and manufacturing apprenticeships in Washington State are not just a job, but a career opportunity! Aerospace and manufacturing apprenticeships provide occupational skills training that combines supervised on-the-job training experience with classroom instruc-tion. It is a proven way to train people for careers in the aerospace, aviation and advanced manufacturing industries that demand a wide range of skills, knowledge, and independent judgment. Apprentice-ship is a highly successful occupational skills model and is often referred to as the original four-year degree.

Apprentices can get paid while learning an occupation on the job and at the same time, earn college credits and a journey-level certificate that makes him or her nationally recognized in their chosen trade.

Employers get a low-cost training program that captures and passes on the knowledge of their current workforce to a new generation of aerospace and advanced manufacturing workers. Employers also find many other advantages such as easier recruitment, increased produc-tivity and safety, less turn-over and a way to screen new employees.

Apprenticeship committees, made up of employee and employer rep-resentatives from the aerospace, aviation and advanced manufacturing industries, operate apprenticeship programs. Both state and federal governments have a role in regulating on-the-job training programs. Aerospace and manufacturing apprenticeships at the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) are a partnership of employers, workers, the State of Washington, and a variety of schools and com-munity colleges.

GM: Nearing ‘Game Changer’ Electric Car Tech

A small battery company backed by General Motors is working on break-through technology that could power an electric car 100 (160 kilometers) or even 200 miles (320 kilometers) on a single charge in the next two-to-four years, GM’s CEO said.

Speaking at an employee meeting, CEO Dan Akerson said the company, Newark, California-based Envia Systems, has made a huge break-through in the amount of energy a lithium-ion battery can hold. GM is sure that the battery will be able to take a car 100 miles (160 kilometers) within a couple of years, he said. It could be double that with some luck, he said.

“I think we’ve got better than a 50-50 chance,” Akerson said, “to develop a car that will go to 200 miles on a charge,” he said. “That would be a game changer.”

GM’s current electric car, the Chev-rolet Volt, goes about 35 miles on a charge and has a small gas motor that generates power to keep the car going after that. Few competitors have electric cars with more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) of range. Tesla Motors’ Model S can go up to 300 miles (480 kilometers), but it has a much larger battery and can cost more than twice as much as a Volt. Nissan’s Leaf and Ford’s Focus electric cars both claim ranges of around 100 miles (120 kilometers), but that can vary with tem-perature, ter-rain and speed.

Envia said ear-lier this year that its next-gener-ation recharge-able lithium-ion cell hit a record high for energy density. The company said the new battery could slash the price of electric vehicles by cutting the battery cost in half.

The GM meeting, which was broadcast on a conference call to employees, lasted about an hour. A participant allowed a reporter from The Associated Press to listen.

“These little companies come out of nowhere, and they surprise you,” Akerson said in response to a question about GM’s strategy on gas-electric hybrid vehicles.

Akerson said the company is looking at hybrids, all-electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and natural gas vehicles, as well as developing more efficient petroleum-powered engines.

“We can’t put all of our chips on one bet,” he said. “We’ve got to look at them all.”

A Full Manufacturing Solutions Provider partners with their customers to drive profits through productivity on the shop floor, an Industrial Supplier or Distributor can only look up the price of a tool for you. That is the message at Swift Tool Co. Inc., a Full Manufacturing Solutions Provider in the greater Seattle area.

I interviewed Steve Swift of Swift Tool and some of his team mem-bers, the story of customer commitment I received will amaze you!

“We invest very heavily in our customer’s profitability and success.” Says Steve Swift, Three local showrooms with huge inventories and the most technologically advanced 5th axis Tool Grinding, nano-composite PVD Coating, and non-contact Inspection Equipment available are all serious financial investments towards supporting their customers’ productivity. But what is the biggest asset that Swift Tool offers to their customers? “Technical Support and the experience at making parts faster and more profitably”, says Swift. “The last thing that our customers need is another outside salesperson knocking on their door, saying ‘I can get that tool for you too’. We have technical support personnel and applications specialists that can come in and look at a job, and drastically reduce the machine time and costs associated with that part. That is where the profits come from in manufacturing!” Steve went on to explain that anyone who is just putting their old or standard tooling out for bid, misses the opportunity to save the big money. “Only a very small amount of money can be saved by looking only at the lowest price, around 1% to be exact. But process improvements and using the most productive tooling can impact jobs by 20-300%!”

For those that are simply looking for a better price on tools, Swift Tool is making some big changes, because admittedly, they’ve never catered to the price only market. “We’ve been working on it for 2 years”, says Steve, “and before the end of the year, Swifttool.com will offer the most comprehensive online ordering in the market”. Steve’s vision for the online ordering is to have the easiest site to go on and order tools from at a competitive price.

Swift Tool’s philosophy of having the highest commitment to cus-tomer profitability, quality, and performance, has made them Syn-onymous with perfection. Swift Tool takes quality and performance to the highest level, by making every job their customers have, a planned solution.

When it comes to selling their cutting tools, 5th axis ground and coated special tools, they are committed to being the best. They do not strive to be great, At Swift Tool Co. Inc., making a flawless tool isn’t a goal, a mission statement, or a business plan, it’s a culture and a way of life that goes back to 1960.”There is a right way to do things, and that way results in perfect tools.

We weren’t taught any other way”, says Steve.

Swift Tool, a family owned business, has been grinding tools and creating manufacturing solutions for over 52 years and is a local Washington metal working distributor with 3 strategic locations. Swift has a World Class tool making facility that manufactures carbide cutting tool solutions. Swift supports their customers with intricate laser part marking, PVD Nano-Phase Coating, Bandsaw Welding, a free Shrink Fit Service, Programming and Technical Support, Cutting Tool Design & Engineering combined with the largest tool inventory in the Northwest.

The 1960’s were a time where tools for Boeing and other top com-panies were ground manually. Before the days of CNC machines, cutting tools were expertly ground by craftsmen on manual tool grinders.

Neil Swift was a craftsman and in the early 60’s he and his two sons, Steve and Larry, worked together in the small shop grinding tools to perfection. Neil had a very good reputation in the area and the word was, nobody could build the tools he could. He was the best tool grinder and even Boeing came to him for some of their form tools. Neil understood the principals of machining metal and taught a strong work ethic and machining perfection to his sons.

Larry and Steve were sweeping chips when they were 6-8 years old and were running machines when they were 11-12, and Neil set them up on drill presses, counter sinking, and chamfering, and deburring. Later at 14-15 years of age they were running lathes and mills, and twin spindle profilers. “Other kids played in the summer and the Swift boys worked without question, we made tools and parts,” said Steve.

“A True Passion For Perfection”

Page 19: A2Z Metalworker NW Edition Aug Sept 2012

A2Z METALWORKER NW • 19 • Aug/Sept 2012

As time moved forward so did their dream to have their own busi-ness and New Tech was started. Steve and Larry built their business, New Tech with a customer first mentality and later bought their father Neil out at Swift Tool. The family business lived on as Steve and Larry merged the two companies New Tech and Swift Tool in 1994 by buying Dad Neil out. Steve and Larry continued on the path taught to them and strived to help make the customers they worked with as profitable as possible.

“In the old days”, Steve says, “We used to be a manual tool and grind shop. Swift Tool has evolved into state of the art CNC Grinding and PVD Coating. We service small to very large customers and our Swift Tool custom-ers are all interested in productivity and profits. They understand that if they buy a good tool they can make more money! Hand ground tools just don’t cut it anymore, it’s like running retreaded tires in a car race.

Steve continued, “SPC tolerances are challenged when you manually grind tools. With state of the art grinding these new CNC machines can perfectly grind tools above specifications (.0002” tolerance) at a faster rate. We use German and Swiss equipment that are all state of the art, the best you can buy with 3 more new machines coming in August and December, that will boost our service to our customers.”

Swift Tool has ten, 5 axis CNC grinding machines armed with automated ro-botic loaders, the same equipment that the Germans use to produce their cut-ting tools, widely regarded as the best tool grinding machinery money can buy.

“We can beat anyone in the world right now with our end mills. We maintain extremely high quality, extremely high consistency, and process improvement. It’s through process improvements that you realize profits.” Steve said.

How did Swift get so good? Certainly growing up learning the art of flawless toolmaking was the foundation, but it took many years on the design trail and accomplishments in the right direction, measur-ing how one tool outperforms the other. The many years of running the tools and empirical science have helped Swift to offer solutions and profitability to all of their customers. They do what works for their customers on their customers machines for their particular application. When you buy a tool from Swift, it works because they help the customer design a specific milling tool for their applica-tion. Swift customers come to them because they now understand the increase in productivity Swift Tool can provide with the special tooling designed and engineered for their scenario.

Steve says, “Swift Tool will pay 30% more for the highest quality tool blanks because Swift understands that when you start with the best

substrate you are on the right path to make the best tool in the world. We also have patents pending on our tools and formulate them with the improved geometry and proprietary processes that we put the carbide end mills through and we have our own coating facility with Swift devel-oped coatings like Molecular Dense Coating (MDC). So, basically we use the best blank, we grind slower to get the best finish, we are meticulous about maintaining the geometry, and making sure it is specific to the ap-plication (the machine, the holder,

fixture, and the entire system that’s involved in the process.).”

When Swift Tool is involved in the process, then they can guarantee more profitable results. For instance; Controlled Radial Engagement Milling in conjunction with a Swiftcarb Rampmill can rough out 3 times faster than any conventional method. Most CAM software now has some form of cutter path based on Controlled Radial Engage-ment Milling, CREM. Swift has a patent pending Ramp Mill, capable of ramping into the material at 5-8 degrees in titanium. “Swift Tool reduces cutting tool costs; if you can calculate how many cubic inches

are removed and how fast it’s removed; you can assign a value to the tool.” Steve said.

The Goal Is: To build the best cutting tools possible; to provide the highest service level, and to make sure our customers are profitable. If your customers are not profitable, they can’t pay their tool bill. So, everyone wins.”

So what does the future look like for Swift Tool? Swift’s online presence will offer additional

savings with the most cost effective tools and resources, and they also will help businesses with inventory management and part numbering of tools. Swift has developed a very sophisticated part numbering system (Patent Pending) whereby they can assign a part number that is specific to what the tool can do thus alleviating the purchase of many different brand names with different part numbers. This will foster the consolidation of purchasing with one part number and can be utilized to save money by standardizing a number for each type of tool.

If you are looking for the largest inventory in WA and for a great tool that can make you more profitable call the folks at Swift Tool: (800)562-0900, www.swifttool.com

Making The Best Of Breakdown In Manufacturing

More and more production and fabrication work looks like it is coming back to developed economies. There are several factors behind this new phenomenon. One is rising wages in China. Recent estimates by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have China’s labour costs going up by 15 to 20 percent a year. Recent rioting at Foxconn, a giant Chinese contract manufacturer, has shown just how much discontent is growing in China. More and more workers are demanding better salaries working conditions and treatment, all of which put upward pressure on costs.

According to BCG, one possible effect of these trends could be an increase in the competitive position of the United States. They argue that by the end of this decade, the US could undergo another indus-trial revolution, as the difference in wages between the lowest paid American workers and the highest paid Chinese workers gets smaller and smaller. As a result, in such diverse areas as computers, transport, machinery and fabricated metals, 10-30% of what America used to import from China could be made domestically by 2020. This could add anywhere from $20 to $55 billion a year to US output.

In these types of production systems, operators are free to work at their own speed, passing their partially completed work pieces onto the next station, often by hand; though in some cases there may be some limited form of mechanical assistance. In between each pair of stations there is usually allocated some space for the temporary storage of work in process. This avoids the need for an operator to stop due to a lack of available work (a condition known as “starv-ing”), or the need for an operator to pause because they cannot pass on their completed work piece (a situation known as “blocking”). It is these inter-station storage spaces that allow workers to process items without being greatly affected by what is going on upstream or downstream. This worker independence is known as “asynchronous” production.

Unpaced lines usually have a certain degree of “imbalance.” What this means is that each work station takes a different amount of time, on average, to finish some required task. The reasons for this are many. One could be the type of work people are doing. Quite often it is difficult to break down tasks in a way that each step requires the same amount of work and effort. Therefore, some stations might have more complicated assignments and thus require more time than others. Also, people by their very nature have differing levels of skill, motivation, education, and ability. In addition to different average completion times, operators can also have differing ranges of completion times. Unlike robots, people speed up or slow down naturally over their day, and though the average time to complete a task might stay the same, if we took a snapshot at any particular time, we would see quite a variation. Studies have shown that the rates at which operators process items can vary by as much as 66%. This variability is measured by the coefficient of variation, or CV.

This slowing and hastening of task times introduces variability into

the production line, but is not the only source of variability. Another major problem that line managers have to deal with is breakdown, and the time it takes to get a workstation operating again.

Many production managers could be well placed to benefit from this expected rebirth in industrial manufacturing. They can gain a possible distinct advantage by utilizing the imbalance that might already exist in their own production facilities. The question we asked was, “can performance in lines that suffer breakdown be improved by properly allocating variable workers?”

A series of experiments were done using simulation on manual un-paced production lines, in which the workers had differing levels of variability (CV). We incorporated station breakdown so as to dupli-cate real life operating conditions as closely as possible. We assumed that workers fell into one of three classifications. That is to say, an operator could be considered as steady, variable, or highly variable, depending on his/her CV.

Four different policies were looked at regarding the placement of variable workers in 5 and 8 station lines, and the amount of space available for inventory was also varied at 1, 2, 4 and 6 units, allowing us to look at whether having more space would absorb the ill-effects of variability and breakdown. The 4 policies were as follows:

1. Separating the variable workers from one another by steadier workers (a zig-zag arrangement). 2. Assigning steadier workers to

the center of the line (a “bowl” arrangement). 3. Placing operators with medium variability in the middle of the line (ascending or descending variability). 4. Having the most variable workers in the center of the line (an “inverted bowl” arrangement).

Contrary to what many production managers might have thought, improved performance was achieved by deliberately unbalancing the variability of the line. The pattern that gave the best results was a CV bowl arrangement, i.e. having the steadiest workers in the center of the line and more variable workers toward both ends of the line. Allocating workers in this fashion resulted in increased production rates, lower average idle times and lower average buffer levels.

Just how good were the improvements? For TR, it was found that in certain instances an increase of almost 3% was possible, with a corresponding decrease of over 13% in average worker idle times being achieved (as compared to a balanced line). ABL results were even more promising in that it was found that, on occasion, an almost 68% reduction in ABL was possible through a CV bowl arrangement of workers.

A word of caution must be sounded, however, to any production manager wishing to employ these imbalance methods into his or her facility. While improvements were found to exist from using the best patterns, serious deteriorations in performance were found from us-ing inferior patterns of imbalance. As always, conditions and results will vary. But we believe that the opportunities for improvement, and thus a competitive advantage, are too great to ignore.

Boeing Expands Gresham Manufacturing Plant

A lone contractor plugged away at a laptop recently in a gleaming chemical processing plant about to open at Boeing’s factory complex in Gresham.

The worker tested and adjusted computerized controls for the plant, which has a series of chemical baths — filled, for now, with water — that will treat aircraft parts in preparation for as-sembly at Puget Sound factories.

Boeing invested more than $100 million in the 64,000-square-foot plant and additional expanded quarters, which opened last month with tours and speeches by company managers. Already the aircraft manufacturer has added 350 workers since breaking ground two years ago on the new space.

“This provides us a modern chemical processing facility that’s going to support our site for large products for a very long time in the future,” said Don Hendrickson, Boeing Portland chief financial of-ficer. “You don’t make this investment if you’re going to keep work here for a couple of years.”

The new jobs bring Boeing’s Gresham employment to 1,800, a sig-nificant workforce in a state that lost manufacturing operations during the recession. Workers make parts from aluminum, steel, titanium, magnesium and other specialized metals for Boeing “7-series” planes such as the 787 Dreamliner.

The processing plant is the first of its kind to gain LEED gold envi-ronmental certification, said Don Schmidt, a company spokesman. It dispenses with cyanide-based copper plating and stripping and cadmium-based processing, substituting more environmentally friendly chemicals, Hendrickson said.

Skylights bathe the new manufacturing lines in natural light. Water will be reused instead of discharged. Runoff will enter bioswales

designed to filter water.

The accompanying 34,000-square-foot expansion of existing quarters will bring Boeing’s Gresham complex to a total 1.3 million square feet.

Twenty-year projections predict a world-wide demand for 35,000 new large com-

mercial planes, for a total $4.5 trillion market, Hendrickson said. Boeing traditionally gets about half the market, and plans to deliver 585 planes this year, he said.

The company is building 35 Boeing 737s a month in Renton, Wash. It plans to increase that number to 38 and then 42. Boeing 777 production will jump from seven a month to more than eight.

Workers in the new Gresham plant will use their new computerized controls to clean, plate and etch parts for these and other planes.

“It’s going to be a busy place,” Hendrickson said.

SolarWorld Initiates Technology Upgrades to Boost Solar Panels’ Performance Edge

HILLSBORO, Ore.-SolarWorld, the largest solar manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere, just celebrated its fifth anniversary of revitalizing, expanding and staffing a formerly idle semiconductor wafer factory here by announcing new investments totaling $27 million to upgrade and replace several factory systems and debut technological advances that will boost the power output of its high-performance solar panels.

Work to install new manufacturing systems from today through the first quarter of 2013 will implement three technological advances fostered and tested by SolarWorld research-and-development specialists in Or-egon and Europe. All three upgrades will increase the power output of SolarWorld’s photovoltaic cells – the light-sensitive building blocks of panels – to propel the company further ahead in its solar-technology

leadership worldwide. For competitive reasons, SolarWorld will not detail the upgrades. The work will employ dozens of contractors’ employees, without affecting either the company’s Hillsboro workforce of about 1,000 or its total unit output.

The new initiatives push SolarWorld’s to-tal capital investment in Hillsboro to more than $600 million, establishing the plant as the only solar factory in the Western Hemisphere that does every manufactur-ing step. In August 2007, the company began activating production tools as it renovated the former 480,000-square-foot plant of Komatsu, which had stood idle since that company had shuttered its facility and laid off its workforce in September 1999. In 2009, SolarWorld built a new, 210,000-square-foot build-ing to house a panel-assembly factory and bigger logistics center. In 2010, the company bought an adjacent property, adding 40,000 square feet of building space on six acres and resulting in a total of 750,000 square feet of building space on 103 acres.

“SolarWorld’s constant forward progress extends Oregon’s leadership of the so-lar industry, one of the most essential energy industries of the future,” said Ryan Deckert, president of the Oregon Business Association. “The company is making advances on multiple fronts to pull further ahead of the global competi-tion: streamlining manufacturing costs, boosting its products’ power output, and leading the domestic industry in restoring fair competition in the U.S. solar market.”

“I congratulate SolarWorld as an ideal partner in Oregon’s effort to build on its strengths of high-technology manufacturing at the cutting edge of the nation’s manufacturing renaissance,” Deckert said. “Even in the face of tremendous challenges due to unfair trade, SolarWorld has demonstrated a lasting commitment to the U.S. renewable energy sector.”

Marking the anniversary, Gordon Brinser, president of SolarWorld Industries America Inc., expressed appreciation for the many public and private stakeholders that have supported the company’s ongoing build-out. SolarWorld monetized some Oregon business energy tax credits though 2010, and this year the company expects to monetize additional credits. In all, these sums will offset about 4 percent of its total capital outlay. Like many industrial companies that make capital improvements within Hillsboro’s Enterprise Zone, SolarWorld also has received temporary relief of taxes on capital improvements, while still paying property, payroll, transit and other taxes. Both types of incentives

Brinser also expressed gratitude for support from U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley for the company’s effort on behalf of the U.S. solar manufacturing industry to pursue trade cases to hold the Chinese industry accountable to international and U.S. trade laws.

In turn, SolarWorld has fulfilled its commitment to create and maintain an average of about 1,000 jobs over several years. In addition, since So-larWorld began its modernizations, construction trailers on the Hillsboro site have become semi-permanent fixtures, serving dozens of construc-tion workers and consulting engineers – up to nearly 1,000 at peak – who staff factory upgrades and expansions. Excluding payroll, the Hillsboro operation in 2011 also purchased some $86 million in goods and services in Oregon and another $22 million in Washington, creating and support-ing jobs at a swelling constellation of regional solar-industry suppliers.

“Though pioneered in the United States, the solar industry is very much a global industry today, and the competition – both fair and unfair – is truly fierce, especially amid today’s turbulent times,” Brinser said. “In this light, it is heartening that with the steady commitment of our corporate leadership, our public partners and our dedicated employees alike, we find ourselves in the enviable position of starting our sixth year at this site just as we started out here – by once again rolling out the most advanced solar technologies on Earth. With these investments, and a successful conclusion of our trade case against China, SolarWorld will be poised to thrive in a fairly traded solar marketplace.”

First Solar to Develop 139 MW Campo Verde Solar Project

First Solar, Inc. announced it is developing the 139 megawattAC (MW) Campo Verde Solar Project, located near El Centro in Imperial County, Calif.

Campo Verde is expected to start construction in the third quarter of 2012 and be completed in 2013, creating about 250 construction jobs. San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) will purchase the project’s output under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

First Solar will construct the project using its advanced thin film PV modules that generate clean, renewable energy with no emissions, waste or water consumption during operation. The project will generate enough electricity to power approximately 50,000 average California homes, displacing 80,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of taking 15,000 cars off the road.

“First Solar is very pleased to be working with SDG&E for the first time to deliver clean, renewable energy and create hundreds of construction jobs,” said Brian Kunz, First Solar VP of Project Development

The Campo Verde project is jointly owned by First Solar and US Solar Holdings LLC, but First Solar has contractual rights to acquire 100 percent ownership interest and is in the process of completing its acquisition.

Boeing Team Demonstrates Expanded Control of Unmanned Aircraft Swarm

Boeing and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Labora-tory (JHU/APL) have demonstrated that an operator on the ground, using only a laptop and a military radio, can command an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) “swarm.” Despite limited flight training, the operator was able to connect with autonomous UAVs, task them and obtain information without using a ground control station.

The team conducted flight tests in Oregon for several days, using two ScanEagle UAVs manufactured by Boeing subsidiary Insitu and swarm technology developed by JHU/APL. The technology allows UAVs to perform similarly to a swarm of insects, completing tasks more quickly and efficiently by communicating and acting together.

Boeing and JHU/APL conducted two tests last year in which dissimilar unmanned platforms across air, land and sea domains collaborated to autonomously conduct searches and communicate information.

“This swarm technology may one day enable warfighters in battle to request and receive time-critical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information directly from airborne UAVs much sooner than they can from ground control stations today,” said

Gabriel Santander, program director of Advanced Autonomous Networks for Boeing Phantom Works. “Swarm network technol-ogy has the potential to offer more missions at less risk and lower operating costs.”

The demonstrations are conducted under a collaborative agreement between Boeing and JHU/APL, a University Affiliated Research Center and a division of Johns Hopkins University that has been addressing critical national challenges through the innovative ap-plication of science and technology for nearly 70 years. It maintains a staff of about 5,000 on its Laurel, Md., campus.

UAV swarm technology is one of Boeing’s many C4ISR capabilities that provide a seamless flow of information -- from collection to ag-gregation to analysis -- for customers’ enduring need for situational awareness. The breadth of these capabilities will be on display at the AUVSI Unmanned Systems North America 2012 conference.

A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Defense, Space & Security is one of the world’s largest defense, space and security businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solu-tions, and the world’s largest and most versatile manufacturer of military aircraft. Headquartered in St. Louis, Boeing Defense, Space & Security is a $32 billion business with 61,000 employees worldwide.

Castrol Industr ial Nor th Amer ica Announces the Launch of the Performance Biolubes Product Line

“The inclusion of the Performance Biolubes technology into our portfolio is an important milestone for the Castrol lubricants business. Today’s success exemplifies Castrol’s strategy to move quickly into new markets and capture key market transitions. It is the first of many steps towards taking our business to the next level as the company develops new offers for our customers and drives a future generation of environmentally responsible products in the industry,” stated John Carey, senior vice president of Castrol’s Aviation, Industrial, Marine and Energy Businesses.

The Performance Biolubes technology platform adds a range of bio-based lubricants, and metalworking fluids to Castrol’s existing

line of lubricants supplied to the aviation, industrial manufacturing, marine and energy markets. Initially these products will be available in North America with plans for future roll out to Castrol’s global operations. At its inception in 1991, the Performance Biolubes technology began as a research project at the University of Northern Iowa. Guy Chiatello, Senior Technical Advisor of Castrol Industrial’s Perfor-mance Biolubes team commented, “We are on the cusp of a major change in the lubricants industry, and Castrol is striv-ing to lead that change with the addition of the Performance Biolubes cutting edge technology into their portfolio. That’s what’s exciting to me.”

Castrol Industrial North America has been a leader in the area of environ-mentally responsible products, being the first major metalworking supplier to voluntarily remove all chlorinated paraffins from its products. Castrol also markets products which are boron free and secondary amine free. The addition of the Performance Biolubes product line expands Castrol’s customer offering through incorporating products that are built from bio-based oils, and are free of chlorine and secondary amines.

Dave Fuerst, President of Castrol In-dustrial North America said “with this expansion in our offering, Castrol will have an impressive line of environmen-tally responsible products available to our industrial customers. New technology is a core element of Castrol’s strategy to

increase our momentum in the B2B lubricants market and to capture the market transition to more environmentally responsible products”. The new offering complements Castrol Industrial’s broader “Responsible” vision, which seeks to deliver safety, community involvement, product stewardship and support of customers’ environmental goals.

In 2000, Castrol became part of BP, one of the world’s largest energy companies and a leader in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, and the manufacturing and marketing of fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals. Castrol Industrial is part of the Castrol brand which now employs over 7,000 people in more than 40 countries, working at the forefront of advanced lubricant technology.

American Brand Project Aims To Promote Companies Employing American Workers

The standard lament about the supposed demise of American potential leans heavily on the notion that we don’t make anything here anymore. Factories have been dismantled and shipped to faraway lands where workers earn less in a week than many of us squander on a morning cup of coffee. Skilled hands that once harnessed machinery to create useful products now push buttons to toast hamburger buns or fill out forms for unemployment insurance.

Too often, the necessary conversation about the jobs crisis winds up furthering the bogus idea that Americans are now the victims of global-ization -- a word that once seemed to describe how Disney, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s were destined to turn the planet into one vast Orange County, but now apparently means we are doomed to expanding jobless-ness as work gets shipped overseas.

Christian Mouritzen has grown so tired of this talk that he and his friends have created a business that aims to squelch it while promoting a less appreciated reality: Lots of enterprising, innovative companies still make products in the United States and are fully capable of thriving in a global economy, generating new jobs in the process.

His new venture, the American Brand Project, aims to put the spotlight on such companies while serving as an e-commerce marketplace for their wares, taking a cut of the resulting transactions. On its website -- now up in beta version and set for a full launch in the fall -- the project lays out the stories of the companies whose products it sells, and extends a special offer for each. It rates companies on their quotient of American-ness, awarding points for whether they are headquartered in the United States, how much of their revenue remains here, how many of their raw materials are sourced domestically, and the degree to which they rely on American labor. In a bid to engage the social nature of the Internet, the site invites public nomination of companies that ought to be included.

Whether this one business succeeds or fails, it is part of something hope-ful, a gathering attack against the dysfunction and despair that sometimes seems to have seized the national character. Washington is not capable of fashioning a credible solution to the employment crisis, not with the politicians fully engaged in the grotesque pageantry of the campaign

-- an exercise largely removed from real problems. But that shouldn’t mean that the rest of us resign ourselves to inaction in the face of high unemployment and continued downward mobility.

One new online business is hardly going to fix everything, but its existence highlights how creative, entrepreneurial people can take matters into their hands to pursue solutions to basic economic problems.

Mouritzen, 48, the company’s president and chief operating officer, says the idea for American Brand Project grew out of conversations he had with four friends during which they bemoaned how many people were without work. Most had spent their careers in digital marketing, and they figured they could direct these skills toward boosting the prospects of companies that were creating products of genuine value at home, and

were poised to hire American workers.

But who fit that description? Even the founders had their doubts. “We had the perception, like many others, that quality products really were not manufactured in the U.S. anymore,” Mouritzen told me. “Luckily, we were proven severely wrong. As we started looking around, we found lots of great companies producing great products, but many of them were not telling their stories very well.”

Among these they found Hanky Panky, a New York City-based intimate apparel company that relies on a network of American contractors to produce its wares. Though much of the lingerie industry has shifted overseas in recent decades, Hanky Panky has stayed here, seeing an American base as a competitive advantage.

“We are American made and very proud of it,” says Lida Orzeck, 65, the company’s CEO, who co-founded the business 35 years ago with a designer friend. “We like having the business here, where we can keep a very close eye on things and where we know that everything is being lawfully done, and we’re keeping our population employed and not causing a gigantic carbon footprint because of all the energy expended sending goods around the world.”

Hanky Panky is a perfect example of the sort risk-embracing, imaginative entrepreneurial spirit that has made American business great, and that sometimes seems to have gotten lost amid the financial hocus pocus that

has dominated our version of capitalism in more recent times.

In 1977, a designer friend gave Orzeck a birthday present -- a bra and bikini underwear she had fashioned out of cotton handkerchiefs. Both women liked the look of this invention so much that they launched a business to make such products. That year they delivered their first order -- twelve

dozen sets -- to the loading dock at the Lord & Taylor depart-ment store in Manhattan.

With just the two of them overseeing the operation, they sold about $200,000 worth of goods that first year, Orzeck says. Today, they employ 150 people, plus contract manufacturers in Queens, Brooklyn and Philadelphia. They ship their products worldwide and boast estimated annual revenues of $50 million.

Here is a point that cannot be emphasized enough as American companies struggle to adapt to global commerce: If Hanky

Panky were to shift production to Asia, it would probably reduce its pro-duction costs, but at the expense of something vital: its direct relationships with customers and its ability to customize orders quickly. It would be jumping into competition with the goliaths of the apparel industry, players who tend to compete on scale and low prices, making goods that are essen-tially commodities -- a contest in which Hanky Panky has few advantages.

Instead, the company is doing what American manufacturers writ large must do -- thinking deeply about their core strengths and exploiting them, rather than willy-nilly chasing after lower costs abroad.

U.S. Economic Outlook Brightens On Jobs, Trade Data

The outlook for the U.S. economy brightened a little after new data pointed to improvement in hiring and greater exports.

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week fell by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 361,000, the Labor Department said. The U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $42.9 billion in June from $48 billion in May, the Commerce Department said in a separate report. That’s the lowest level in 18 months.

The drop was largely because of cheaper oil imports. But exports also rose to a record-high $185 billion, an encouraging sign at a time when global growth has slowed. U.S. companies even sold more goods in Europe, despite the region’s ongoing financial crisis.

Some economists revised their growth forecasts higher after seeing the better trade data. A smaller trade deficit acts as less of a drag on growth because it means the United States is spending less on foreign-made products and is taking in more from sales of U.S.-made goods.

“As long as we can keep selling more of our goods across the world, the economy can (grow) at a moderate pace,” said Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors. “Despite all the craziness in Europe and the slowdowns in Asia, our exports managed to increase. “

Employers added 163,000 jobs in July, the biggest increase since Feb-ruary. From April through June, employers had created a lackluster 73,000 jobs a month, not enough to keep up with a rising population.

Applications for unemployment benefits measure the pace of layoffs. When they fall consistently below 375,000, it typically suggests hir-ing is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Claims had averaged 385,000 a week in June before the numbers were muddied last month by seasonal factors related to temporary summertime layoffs in the auto industry. The seasonal distortions had faded by last week, providing a clearer picture of a slightly im-proved job market.

“The clear decline since June provides some corroboration of the better-than-expected payrolls reading,” said Jim O’Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics. “In short, encourag-ing data for the recovery.”

Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics, said fewer unem-ployment applications suggest that the job market is fairly stable.

“The pickup in jobs growth in July may therefore be sustained in August,” Dales said.

Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays Capital, says he expects second-quarter growth to be revised to an annual pace of 1.8 percent.

Somon Air receives its second 737-900ER with the Boeing Sky Interior

Boeing’s Next-Generation 737-900ER (extended range) reached 100 deliveries with a delivery this week to Tajikistan-based Somon Air.

To date, the 737-900ER has logged 414 orders from 16 customers. The Next-Generation 737 family (all models) has won orders for more than 6,000 airplanes and Boeing has delivered more than 3,800.

“Airlines around the world are recognizing the superior performance and operating economics of the Next-Generation 737-900ER,” said Beverly Wyse, 737 vice president and general manager. “It offers the best seat-mile cost of any single-aisle airplane which is especially important with today’s high fuel prices.”

The Next-Generation 737-900ER is a short-to-medium range twinjet that increases the capability of the Next-Generation 737 family. The higher-capacity, longer-range derivative of the 737-900 was launched in July 2005 with an order for 30 airplanes from Indonesia’s Lion Air and introduced into service in April 2007.

The Next-Generation 737-900ER replaces the larger, single-aisle Boeing 757, which ceased production in 2004. The 737-900ER is capable of operating more than 90 percent of the 757 twin-engine’s routes yet at a much lower operating cost.

The 737-900ER is the longest 737, typically carrying 180 passengers in a two-class layout with an exit limit certified for up to 220 passengers in a single-class configuration.

Somon Air, based in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, is the country’s first private full-service carrier. This is the airline’s second 737-900ER delivered with the Boeing Sky Interior.

Goodrich Wins Contract for Landing Gear System Overhaul Services

Goodrich Corporation has been selected by Boeing to provide landing gear system maintenance services in support of the United States Air Force fleet of Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Included as part of the agreement, Goodrich will provide training to Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) in Ogden, Utah to perform overhaul of C-17 landing gear systems as a Goodrich supplier.

Greg Watson, site director for Goodrich’s Landing Gear business in Burlington, Ontario, Canada stated, “We look forward to using this partnership with HAFB as an opportunity to share best practices between the U.S. Government and private industry which can help to identify key process improvements and continue to add value to performance.”

Goodrich is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the Globemaster III landing gear system. It is also one of the largest landing gear overhaul maintenance suppliers in the industry.

Airbus To Double $12B It Spends With U.S. Suppliers

European aerospace giant Airbus said it plans to double the $12 bil-lion it now spends with U.S. suppliers amid strong airplane sales, explaining that the company has a backlog that is “disturbingly healthy.”

Airbus America Chairman Allan McArtor told representatives from 114 companies at an aviation supplier conference in Kansas that 40 percent of what his company uses to build its planes comes from U.S. companies.

“We’ve got a backlog that quite frankly is disturbingly healthy, because it is hard to sell airplanes when your delivery position is so far out,” McArtor said. “So we want to increase our capacity. We cannot increase our capacity without increasing our supply chain capability. We cannot increase our supply chain capabil-

ity unless we approve more qualified suppliers. And that is precisely why we are here.”

McArtor was in Wichita with U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran to host the first Air Capital Supplier Summit.

Kansas’ aerospace industry encompasses more than 450 companies and accounts for more than 32,000 direct jobs. The France-based company has an engineering center in Wichita where it employs more than 350 people, making the Wichita facility its largest engineering center outside of Europe.

The Airbus supplier event comes just months after Airbus’ biggest competitor, Boeing, announced it planned to close its defense plant in Wichita by the end of 2013. The decision means the loss of some 2,160 high-paying Boeing jobs in Wichita, ending Boeing’s presence in a city where it has been a major employer for generations.

Airbus planned to build refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force in Alabama, but its parent company, the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co., lost the $35 billion contract to Boeing in 2011. Kan-sas officials and its congressional delegation helped Boeing land the lucrative tanker contract after its officials promised to do the tanker modification work at Boeing’s defense plant in Wichita.

Moran told reporters before the supplier conference that Kansas officials recognized the importance of Airbus’ presence in Wichita long before summit.

“While there was a lot of effort on behalf of Boeing in regard to the issue related to the tanker, I and others wanted to make certain Airbus knew we were very grateful for their participation in the Wichita business community,” the Republican senator said. “I think we would be here today regardless of the Boeing decision.”

McArtor said his company knew about and was fine with the strong allegiance between Kansas politicians and Boe-ing. But he noted that most of Airbus’ suppliers are the same suppliers for Boeing.

“Manufacturing large commercial aircraft is a very competitive global business, it is decidedly not a U.S. versus European business, although some would like to frame it that way. But it is in fact a global business that relies on a global supply chain. Both Boeing and Airbus rely on suppliers that are located around the world,” he said.

Airbus depends on U.S. companies more than it depends on any other country in the world to build its airplanes, McArtor said, adding that the company looks to the United States for innovation, dependability and flexibility.

“We are the largest export customer of U.S. aerospace,” McArtor said. “Boeing as you know is the largest exporter, we are the largest export customer and want to grow that.”

A350 XWB “MSN1” flight-deck comes to life

Proving early readiness of aircraft systems a year before its first flight

Airbus has successfully powered-up the flight-deck of A350 XWB “MSN1” for the first time, following the initial application of electrical power to the aircraft’s front fuselage. This significant milestone was

passed only two weeks after this sec-tion was delivered to the Final Assem-bly Line (FAL) in Toulouse. Moreover, it gives a promising indication of the A350 XWB’s progress in pre-FAL and the readiness of the aircraft’s systems.

Flight-deck power-on is an important step on the route to complete aircraft power-on and first flight, because it enables most systems functional checking to be undertaken. Having achieved this nearly a year before first flight will allow early identifica-

tion and resolution of potential issues and thus help to protect the aircraft’s development schedule.

Testing of the front fuselage section will proceed during this sum-mer. This will be followed by the power-on of the entire fuselage later this year.

Could Shale Gas Boom Reverberate Through Manufacturing?

Shale gas resources may spark a US manufacturing renais-sance with benefits that in-clude cost savings, greater investments to expand manu-facturing facilities and in-creased levels of employment, according to a report by pro-fessional services company PwC titled, “Shale Gas: A renaissance in US manufacturing?”. To achieve these results, however, the company says manufacturers must help manage the environmental, regulatory and tax concerns created by shale gas resources. PwC expects an estimated $11.6 billion in cost savings by 2025 by combining recent natural gas consumption levels with potential natural gas prices under high shale recovery scenarios. Additionally, manufacturing employ-ment could increase by approximately one million workers by 2025 in high shale recovery scenarios.

During the last couple of years, increased commercialization of al-ternative energy has ushered in mounting debate on the impact--or lack of impact--that the deployment of new energy sources has on US job creation. Shale gas is one such alternative energy source that has drawn momentous investment and discussion as the country pursues a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.

US manufacturing companies could employ approximately one mil-lion more workers by 2025.Lower feedstock and energy cost could help US manufacturers reduce natural gas expenses by as much as $11.6 billion annually through 2025.

Clean Power Line Finally Operational In CA

After more than five years spent on fighting off critics and se-curing regulatory permits, the $1.9 billion Sunrise Powerlink transmission line will now ferry

“live” clean power such from solar and wind energy instal-lations in the California desert to the state’s southern coastal

region. The project uses both 500-kV and 230-kV lines and it will initially be able to carry up to 800 MW of electricity, with an eventual capacity of 1000 MW. Building new transmission lines, or upgrading existing ones, has come to be viewed as a necessity as more power plants are proposed and set to rise from remote regions where there is space to accommodate large-scale projects that could produce renewable energy more cheaply than smaller ones. For California, which has an aggressive goal of getting 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, many of the solar farms are materializing in the eastern part of the state, in arid deserts and on former farmland.
