Newly-appointed Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is only the second woman after late Indira Gandhi to become

the Defence Minister of India, and the first one to take independent charge. She is the first full-time woman defence

minister of the country after late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had twice held charge of defence portfolio. Sitharaman

previously served as a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs and the Minister for Commerce and Industry

US tech giant Google has unveiled ‘Tez’- a simple and secure mobile app for digital payments and commerce, built

with the goal of working for everyone in India, and is available now for download on Google Play (Android) and the

App Store (iOS). App is available in English and seven Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Gujrati, Kannada, Marathi,

Tamil, and Telugu). Tez works in partnership with four Banks – Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of

India (SBI) – to facilitate the processing of payments across over 50 UPI enabled banks.

Archaeologists in Andhra Pradesh have discovered an ancient Buddhist site that dates back to the 1st century AD.

RBI has announced it has added private lender HDFC Bank to its list of “domestic systemically important banks” (D-

According to a government of India notification, all the peer-to-peer lending (P2P) platforms will be treated as non-

Arjan Singh was the only officer of the IAF to be given a distinction equal to that of a Field Marshal. In 2016, the IAF named its Panagarh (West Bengal) air base after Arjan Singh on the occasion of his 97th birth anniversary. The Panagarh base would be called Air Force Station Arjan Singh. Modi, Abe kick off India’s first bullet train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe laid the foundation stone for the proposed

Ahmedabad-Mumbai High-Speed Rail Network, commonly known as the bullet train, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Around Rs 1.10 lakh crore will be spent on the Mumbai to Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Project that is

being partially funded by Japan. Out of the Rs 1,10,000 crore, Japan is giving a loan of Rs 88,000 crore.

The interest on this loan is minimal at 0.1 per cent and it is to be repaid in 50 years, with a grace period of 15 years.

On the Ahmedabad-Mumbai route, total 12 stations have been proposed.

It is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from seven to three hours.

With this, India has become the first to import the iconic ‘Shinkansen’ bullet-train technology after Taiwan.

56 years in the making: PM Modi inaugurates the Sardar Sarovar Dam, dedicates to nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who celebrated his 67th birthday today (17th September), inaugurated and dedicated

to the nation the India’s biggest and the world’s second-biggest dam Sardar Sarovar Dam, in Kevadia, Gujarat, nearly

six decades after its foundation stone was laid.

Electricity from the dam will majorly benefit Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

The foundation stone of the dam was laid on April 5, 1961 by the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Lal

Nehru. However, it took 56 years to complete its construction.

The inaugural event also sees the culmination of the fortnight-long Narmada Mahotsav – launched by the Gujarat

government to celebrate the completion of the work.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is observing ‘Sewa Diwas’ to mark the occasion.

Government launches Saubhagya scheme for household electrification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana ‘Saubhagya’ electricity scheme to provide

24×7 power to all families across India at the BJP’s National Executive meet and on the occasion of birth anniversary of

RSS ideologue Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in New Delhi.

The scheme will cover all rural families after electrification of all villages by December end, this year.

The States and Union Territories are required to complete the works of household electrification by the 31st of

December 2018.

The total outlay of the project is Rs. 16, 320 crore while the Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) is Rs. 12,320 crore.

The rural household outlay is estimated to be Rs 14025cr, with Rs 2295cr being for urban households.

The government will electrify all villages by December 2017, and all households by December 2018. Singh said the

next target will be 24×7, reliable quality supply, with no load shedding.
