Rotating Cam Limit Switches

13-2

Description ApplicationsBulletin 803 Rotating Cam Limit Switchesare heavy duty control circuit devices usedwith machinery having a repetitive cycle ofoperation where motion is correlated toshaft rotation. These devices initiate con-tact actuation at various positions duringshaft rotation. Bulletin 803 Rotating CamLimit Switches are designed for long lifeand heavy duty operation.

The switch operates equally well rotatingin either direction, and when mounted inany plane. Bulletin 803 devices are offeredin six different styles to meet a wide rangeof applications. All styles make use ofcams mounted on a shaft. As the shaft ro-tates, the cams actuate the contacts. Many options and modifications are avail-able for most applications.

Ambient Temperature RangeTemperatures below 32F (0C) arebased on the absence of freezing mois-ture, water, or other fluids that may solidifyand impede contact operation of the con-trol. Temperature ranges are as follows:Operating: -22F to 150F (-30C to 66C)Storage: -22F to 200F (-30C to 93C)Technical TermsLobe – high position of cam segments. The lobe pushes against the cam-rollerassembly to activate the circuit.

Valley – low position of cam segments. The valley passes by the cam-roller as-sembly without activating the circuit.

Keyway – slot in shaft used to connectdriven shaft to the machine. Keyway alsoreferences 0, Top Dead Center (TDC).

Timing – when the cam activates the cir-cuit. Timing is determined by the positionof the cam on the shaft (in reference tokeyway/TDC). For example, when a camis positioned at a 90 angle , the circuit willactivate when the cam is 90 from TDC.

Dwell Time – amount of time cam lobe ac-tivates the circuit. Dwell is determined bythe size of the cam lobes and positioningof the cam segments.

Maximum Dwell Time – when lobes ofboth cam segments are offset to the maxi-mum angle.

Minimum Dwell Time – when lobes ofboth cam segments are aligned.

Theory of OperationBulletin 803 Rotating Cam Limit Switcheshave the same basic mechanical struc-ture, including the following: 2–12 circuits with cam opened contact

assembly or snap action contact blockassembly

spring-loaded cam-roller assemblymounted to the contact base

2–12 cam assemblies with two adjust-able cam segments per cam

rotating shaftSee Figure 2. As the shaft rotates on theshaft, the cam lobes push against thecam-roller assembly activating the circuit, the cam valley passes by the cam-rollerassembly returning the contact to its nor-

mal state. The position of the cam on theshaft (timing) determines when the circuitwill activate within the 360 rotation cycle. The size of the lobe and the positioning ofthe cam segments determine how long thecircuit will be activated (dwell). Setting tim-ing and dwell for each circuit determinesmachine operation.

Adjusting Dwell and TimingInternal AdjustmentsStyles A, B and P have internal dwell andtiming adjustments. Styles E and EF haveinternal dwell adjustments. Internal timingand dwell adjustments must be madewhen the device is not moving. To makeadjustments, remove cover, loosen cambolts, and rotate cams to the required op-erating position. Bulletin 803 devices haveangular degree scales on the cam mount-ing plate or on the shaft for ease of setting. When cams are set in position, tightencam bolts and install the cover.

External AdjustmentsStyle F has external dwell and timing ad-justments. Both adjustments can be madewith a screwdriver while the device is inmotion. Styles E and EF have external

timing adjustment. Timing adjustmentscan be made with a screwdriver while thedevice is in motion.

Shaft ExtensionsShaft extension is defined as seen fromthe front of the device. Left shaft extensionis standard for Style A, B, E, EF and F.Right shaft extension is standard for Style P. Non-standard left, right anddouble shaft extensions can be ordered asModifications. See page 13-9.

Contacts25 Ampere Normally Closed ContactsNormally closed cam opened doublebreak contacts are rated at 25A continu-

ous current. When using normally closedcontacts, the cam lobe engages the cam-roller to open the normally closed contact.

10 Ampere Snap Action Contacts

Single pole double throw (1 N.O. - 1 N.C.)snap action contacts are rated for 10Acontinuous current. Snap action contactshave NEMA rating designation A600.When using snap action contacts, the camlobe engages the cam-roller causing thecontacts to snap over. The normallyclosed contact opens and the normallyopen contact closes.

Ordering ModificationsModifications are ordered by adding the appropriate modification suffix code to the catalog number of the basic device. Modificationsare listed in three groups, Modification Group 1, 2 and 3. Suffix codes should be added to the catalog number in the order they arepresented. For example, if your device requires a modification from Group 1 and 2, list the suffix code from Group 1 first.

Description Suffix Code ✽

An external adjustment sprocket is available for factory modification only forStyle A, B and P switches that have chain drive sprockets. This provides ameans of changing the relative position between the driving mechanism and theshaft. While the device is stopped, pull out the knurled knob to disengage thespline, allowing the cam shaft to be turned in 5 increments. The external ad-justment sprocket is for a 0.38” (9.53 mm) No. 35 chain. Sprocket has 48 teethwith a pitch diameter of 5.73” (145.64 mm).

Ordering CamsBulletin 803 devices require a completecatalog number for the Rotating Cam LimitSwitch, and a separate cam code for therequired cams. As shown in the ExampleCam Code listed below, the cam code isused to identify style, shaft extension andcam code designators.

Specifying Degrees of RotationCam Code Designators specify number ofcams required and degrees of rotation foreach cam. Degrees of Rotation deter-mines how long (dwell time in degrees) thecam will activate the circuit during the 360rotation cycle.

For example, refer to the Cam Code Des-ignator Table entitled “Cams for Style A”on page 13-11. If you select Cam CodeDesignator 1 , the cam will open a normal-ly closed contact for 24 to 29 and closethe contact for 331 to 336 (depending onthe minimum/maximum dwell time setting).

Cam Code Designator SequenceCam Code Designators must be enteredinto the Cam Code in sequence startingfrom the standard driven shaft extension, left or right. The cam closest to the shaftextension is in the “First Position”, and de-termines the sequence of the remaining

cams. See Example Cam Code on thispage. Specify a Cam Code for each camposition. If no cam is required, place an“X” in that position. When ordering a de-vice with double shaft extension for StylesA, B, E and EF , the cam sequence startsfrom the left. When ordering double shaftextension for Style P, cam sequence startsfrom the right.

How to Specify a Cam CodeWhen specifying a cam code, refer to the Example Cam Code and Cam Code Designator Tables and order as follows:Select and specify a code for the Style.

Select and specify a code for the Shaft Extension.

Select required Cam Code Designators from the appropriate tables on page 13-11. Enter Cam Code Designatorsin sequence, starting from the standard driven shaft extension.

If cam is not required, place an “X” in that position.
