2014

A Year In Review

What a Year! We have had a great year at Clubhouse! Some of the fun things we have done include our annu-al Valentine and Halloween dance where we invited other local Clubhouses to join us in a fun night of eating, dancing, and socializing! We were also able to organize the 2014 annual Wa-satch Wellness Run. It was a lot of work, but a great opportunity to raise awareness about mental illness as well as donations and money to use for Clubhouse activities! Then, as the holi-days approached, we got to do our yearly Thanksgiving Dinner where staff made a delicious meal for the members to express appreciation for all their hard work here at Clubhouse. We also hosted the annual Christmas party that everyone loves because we get to exchange gifts and enjoy another fantastic dinner! Of course, we still had our weekly Tuesday night skills de-velopment activities like arts and crafts, shopping and budgeting, karaoke, game nights, and TE Dinners. We are looking forward to seeing what 2015 has in store for our wonderful Clubhouse!

National and International News

January 1: Latvia officially adopts the Euro as its currency and be-comes the 18th member of the Eurozone.

February 7–23: The XXII Olympic Winter Games are held in Sochi, Russia.

March 8: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, a Boeing 777 airliner en route toBeijing from Kuala Lumpur, disappears over the Gulf of Thai-land with 239 people on board. The aircraft is presumed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean.

April 27: The Catholic Church canonizes Popes John XXIII and John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday.

May 5: The World Health Organization identifies the spread of poliomyelitis in at least 10 countries as a major worldwide health emergency.

June 12 – July 13: The 2014 FIFA World Cup is held in Brazil, and is won by Germany, with the runners-up being Argentina.

July 8– August 26: Amid growing tensions be-tween Israel and Hamas following the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in June and the revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager in July, Israel launches Operation Protective Edge on the Palestinian Gaza Strip starting with numerous missile strikes, fol-lowed by a ground invasion a week later. In 7 weeks of fighting, 2,100 Palestinians and 71 Israelis are killed.

August 8: The United States Military begins an air campaign in northern Iraq to stem the flow of ISIS militants.

September 2: A video is released of journalist Steven Sotloff being beheaded by the ISIS terrorist group.

October 12: A Texas nurse is the first person in the U.S. to con-tract the Ebola Virus.

November 24: A grand jury in St. Louis, Missouri decided not to in-dict Officer Darren Wilson for the August shooting of Michael Brown. This sparked national protests, both violent and peaceful.

December 1: World’s AIDS Day—researchers state that there are more people receiving treatment for AIDS than the number of re-ported new cases each year.
