WE PRESENT THE SECOND EDITION OF WEART FESTIVAL BARCELONA; THE INDEPENDENT, MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART FESTIVAL WHICH IS HELD ONCE A YEAR IN BARCELONA TO SUPPORT AND SERVE AS A PLATFORM FOR ARTISTS AND VENUES THAT PROMOTE CULTURE_

PRESENTATION

01

During the Festival there will be five exhibitions of different artistic disciplines: Visual Arts, New Media Art, Illustration, Street Art and Photography, spread over five spaces and five separate days. Each discipline is presented in a different area of the city, creating a creative and alternative path around Barcelona. There will also be other parallel activities that enrich the landscape of art and its relationship with the environment.

Weart Festival will be held during the months of October and November 2013. Each year the festival offers a different concept upon which rotate the five artistic disciplines. This year’s theme is SUBVERSION.

ART Y SUBVERSION

“SEJA ARTISTA, SEJA HERÓI”_ MONGOLIA MAGAZINE

02

Revista Mongolia collaborates writing and signing the text that serves as a reference point and inspiration to artists.

1923. Marcel Duchamp wrote in one of his notebooks the following question: “Is it pos-sible to create work that is not art?”.

1917. The author creates “Fontaine”, signed with the pseudonym R. Mutt. It is a horizon-tally placed urinal shown in an exhibition organized by the Society of Independent Artists of which Duchamp is the president. After lengthy discussions, the other members decide that the piece is not art and should be removed from public display. Once the exhibition is over, Duchamp resigns as president of the Society.

1937. The Nazi party displays the show “Entartete Kunst” (Degenerate Art) at Haus der Kunst in Munich. It is a chaotic and disorganized exhibition of artworks, which the regime seeks to ridicule for not fitting with the ideal of art promoted by Hitler, such as that of the “Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung” (The Great German Art Exhibition).

1939. The owners of the store Bonwit-Teller, centrally located on Fifth Avenue in New York, request Salvador Dali to decorate one of its windows. After realizing that the work of the artist is too shocking, the managers modify it without consulting with the artist. Dali, in anger, destroys the window. As a result he gets arrested, prosecuted and sentenced to compensate the agents.

1968. A group of artists develop the slogan “Tucumán Arde” (Tucumán’s burning), a set of actions aimed to criticize extreme poverty and hunger (result of government policies) suffered by this region in northern Argentina. The initiative brings art to its social context and ties it to activism and social movements. It ends when prohibited by order of the military government of Onganía.

1969. In one of their concerts Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes display a banner made by the artist Heio Oiticica with the slogan “seja marginal seja hero”. It shows the silhouette of the body of Cara Cavalo, a drug dealer assassinated by the po-lice. As a result, the military government imprisons Caetano and Gil and then expels them from the country, forcing them to seek asylum in the UK.

2001. The Taliban government in Afghanistan destroys with dynamite and artillery the Buddhas of Bamiyan, two large statues carved on the side of a cliff. The reason: the monuments are considered as contrary to the rules contained in the Koran.

2003. Opus Dei distributes among its members a bibliographic guide that compiles books, which should not be read for being considered harmful. Among the titles are “Papa Goriot” by Balzac, “The Devil’s Dictionary” by Bierce, “The Hive” by Cela, “Manuel’s book” by Cortázar or the volume “Sodom and Gomorrah” forming part of ” In Search of Lost Time “by Proust.

2010. Chinese authorities destroy the studio of artist Ai Weiwei. This event is followed by a campaign of harassment that includes house arrests and illegal detentions.

Although the events stated are limited to the XX and XXI centuries, the relationship be-tween art and power throughout history might be considered at least as tortuous. One of the functions of art is to be critical and to modernize the society in which it emerges. In those cases in which the artists and the mainstream enjoyed quiet and good cohabitation, we might say (with the risk of being wrong) that the first activity could be described as propaganda rather than as art.

Therefore, one hundred years after Marcel Duchamp reflected on this human activity by raising the question that heads this article, perhaps it is appropriate to ask ourselves: “Is it possible for art to not be subversive?”.

History shows that being an artist necessarily implies risking one’s personal well-being with each new suggestion. Please abstain if you’re unwilling to face this: art needs heroes, not collaborators.

WEARTIST 2013:

JULIA DIERICKX-BRAX_

«The work of the young Parisian artist Julia Dierickx-Brax, graduated in Arts from Sorbone University in Paris, is a look into one of the classic themes in the Art History, the dream, the rest.

Asleep Endimion is one of the most represented myths in the history of painting, mytho-logical character present in the metamorphosis of Ovideo that Zeus fell into an endless sleep by Selene’s request because she wanted to visit him every day. This dream kept him forever young. From the fascination of the vulnerability, fragility and intimacy of the resting figure appears Dierickx-Brax work, built using threads that weave stories and joining these points generates a large format three-dimensional drawings.

Her drawings come from observation of the sleepy body and reflect on the unconscious state of human as a metaphor for eternal sleep.»

06CONCEPT

WEART FESTIVAL 2013_

Our goal is to energize the scene of contemporary cultural production in Barcelona.WeArt Festival serves as a platform for emerging artists. Annually, an open call islaunched to national and international artists. It establishes a process for selectingworks managed by recognized professionals. In this way, we can ensure a certainlevel of quality amongst the participants. Without having the format of an art fair, i.e. without explicitly instrumentalizing commercial exchanges, WeArt Festival worksas a platform that functions as a network node that enhances the cohesion of thecultural fabric of the city. Moreover, the festival also aims to generate critical mass ofpeople that can participate actively.

In WeArt the following principles guide us: critical thinking, participationand collaboration, innovation culture and accessibility.

The festival will be held in the months of October and November 2013.Each artistic discipline is presented in a symbolic space within the city, therebycreating an alternative route around Barcelona.

As part of the festival, a total of five openings corresponding to the five spaces totheir disciplines will be held. Those will show the work of renowned artists and emerging talents. In parallel, we will have specific activities that will be part of theschedule and route of the WeArt Festival.

Each year the festival offers a topic to frame the works and also to serve as a startingpoint to inspire the artists. This year the theme is Subversion. What do we meanexactly the issue of subversion? The art of destabilizing ideas, transgressing thepreconceived limits, providing with symbolic value to the aesthetic form. The ability to be curious and to be able to transmit ideas by screeching other’sminds…
