At this years Nats, I stress tested my left index finger with a Q40 propeller. Propeller w on. It took off about 3/16 from the tip of my finger and about 1/3 of the nail. The propeller also took a licking. 50% of the blade was missing on both blades. There is a relatively new product on the market in the Band-Aid line of products. They are called “Advanced Healing”. They w ork! Af ter only 10 days, the tip w as completely replaced w ith new tissue. I w as amazed. It is still very tender, but it is healed. I am glad I w as still using a w ood prop. The w ood prop gave before there was more dam- age to my finger. I am also going to go back to using remote needles. The Nats was a great event this year. There w ere very few crashes. For the 5 days, I think that there were less than 10 crashes. The event w as perfectly choreographed by Mike Condon. The more times that he runs the event, the better it gets. Thank you, Mike, for another job w ell done. Rhonda and I are already looking forw ard to next year. The AMA Nats is an event that every racer in the country should attend. It is the grandest event of all. There w ere also some nice changes made to the museum this year. The AMA is doing a great job of preserv- ing the history of modeling. The controversial plastic prop rule for Q40 is going to the Pylon Contest Board again. It is different than the last rule, but is flaw ed. The flaw ed parts of the rule as proposed is as published in the July 2002 of Model Aviation are: 1. Material: “Material: either w ood or a chopped carbon fiber filled injection molded compound w ith tensile strength at least equivalent to that of Ticona Celstran PA-CF35-15.” Comments on rule change. The tensile strength of the material is not the only important factor. Glass has great tensile strength, but I am sure that you w ould not like to be around a glass propeller turning 24,000 RPM’s on the ground. I asked the question of an injection molder as to w hat w ould have to be considered in selecting resin for a plastic racing prop. The follow ing is the response I received: When choosing the type of plastic to be used for any given product, there many things to consider, other than just tensile strength. For an example, glass (w indow) has a very high tensile strength. It w ould not be good for a propeller. For a plastic racing propeller the mater ial needs to have very high flexural modulus, high impact strength and most important a high flexural strength. Impact strength w ould w ithstand a projectile or violent vibration. Other materials that w ould do w ell w ith tensile strength, w ould not stand the rigors that our propellers are put through. The characteristics of the material should have a technical description of all of the follow ing to describe the mater ial used: 1. Stiffness very high (Flexural Modulus) 2. Chemical resistance 3. Good Hardness 4. High ( Compressive Strength) the force to dent it 5. Very high (Impact Strength) vibration and shock load. 6. A Word from the President

Bottom line is that this part of therule is incorrect and is not a viabledescription of w hat a plastic racingpropeller should be made of.

This part of the rule w hether it istoo litt le or too much does not mat-ter. What it does do is shift theliability of the propeller from themanufacturer to the AMA. If it isthe AMA that is determining themater ial used and w ill thereforepoint the liability of any propelleraccident to the AMA. Not only, ifa blade is throw n, but if a fingeris lost, or if an airplane shouldstrike someone and the propellerdoes excessive physical damagebecause it did not give or break onfirst strike.

2. Dimensions:“No limit for w ood. Injection-molded propellers shall have adiameter, pitch, blade w idth, andblade airfoil identical to that of theapproved part number at everymeasurable station.”

The manufacturer is the only onethat know s what it is supposed tobe. There is no provision in therule to define w hat the approvedprop is. Any prop that looks thesame from an “eyeball” examina-tion w ould be accepted. What theprop looks like from a glance hasnothing to do w ith its’ legality orperformance. This could lead tolots of speed creep and cheating.

3. Availability:“Injection-molded moldedpropellers shall be commerciallyavailable and stock except forbalancing, etc 7.5.2 underGeneral Model Aircraft Require-ments.” Comments on this portionof the proposed rule change: Thisis not enforceable. The plasticprops can be modif ied by heating

and changing the pitch of theblade. It is not expressly prohib-ited, so it w ould be legal under thegeneral rule. The CD w ill not beable to detect an illegal prop andwill allow cheating to take place. Arule that is not enforceable is notan acceptable rule. “

4. Prior approval:“APC part number LP07480C,bearing the raised markings ‘7.4X8’ on the blade is approved.”

What is stamped on the blade hasno bearing that the prop w illalw ays be the same. It can have adiameter of 7.4” and a pitch of 8”on some part of the blade, yet benothing like the intended prop.There is nothing in the rule aswritten to hinder the manufacturerto continue to develop theLP07480C propeller and stayinside the rule as w ritten. Somehave said that he w ould agree notto make any changes. That is notthe point. Again, this rule cannotbe enforced as written. If everyonepromised not to cheat, w e couldget rid of the AMA rulebook andjust go on w hat is right. NOT!

5. Eligibility for competition:“A propeller once approved shallbe eligible for competit ion so longas it remains commerciallyavailable as defined in section 2“Defined Terms”

The beginning of this controversialissue w as to help attract new rac-ers to our great event. That reasonhas long passed. Now theexperienced fliers have found thatthe plastic prop gives them muchmore speed. This has happenedbecause of allow ing them to berun at various contests across theNation. Now there is no moreconcern for the new guy, just theexperienced like the faster speed

that they are getting from the plas-tic props. Rusty Van Baren, RandyBridge, and our Contest BoardChairman, Pete Reed, have all settheir personal best times w ith theplastic props this year. I am surethat there are more, but these arethe ones that I know for sure. Thisis speed creep!

We should thank Mike Condon fortrying to solve this controversialproblem, but this rule as w rittenshould not pass. It is a flaw ed rulebefore passage.

It is w ell know n that I oppose theplastic prop in any version. Myreason is that it is faster than thewooden props available undermost condit ions. This leads us to achange of the rules that w ill makeour Q40 airplanes faster than theyare w ith the current wood proprule. We should not pass any rulethat makes our current equipmentfaster. The AMA EC stood up forus and gave us the responsibilityto control our speeds. If w e do not,I am sure that the slow down prob-lem w ill once again become a ma-jor issue. If a plastic prop rulepasses, we deserve to be man-dated.

the only NMPRA member (69i) fora 250 mile radius. Check a map -Phoenix is closer than Dallas andLA is closer than Houston.

In any event, I have follow ed yourcolumn in the New sletterand read the column in ModelAviation and thought about thelack of beginners. Beginners!Heck, I w as just looking for some-one, anyone, to race w ith. Irealized that the only w ay Iw asever going to get to race w as toorganize the race myself. It hasbeen some seven years sinceanyone even attempted to have arace here in El Paso. There w assome interest from the youngerguys at my club, the El PasoRadio Controllers (cleverhuh?). The old guys said they'dback us up, so I volunteered todevelop rules w ith help from ourclub president and to be theCD. The theory w as to come upwith a race that f irst timers canhandle. My detractors referred tome as the "Race Nazi", w hen Ididn't immediately agree w ith theirsuggestions.

Quickies are easy to fly but noone ever believes that until theytry flying one. So in short orderwe decided that the airframeswould be 424/428 airplanes. Theagonizing decision w asengines. I have flow n quickieswith everything from .25's toQuick Jett’s. I knew that if theplanes w ere too quick,attrition from exceeding pilotingskills w ould doom theproject. We also decided thatexpense w as an issue. We choseOS .40 LA's, plain bearing, tinycarb and all. (13,250 w ith anAPC 9x6 is a good one). Planeand engine could be had forabout $175.00 if they bought anARF. Our local hobby shop (w e

have one for a city of 600,000)agreed to put together a packagefor us. We also decided to runtw o matrixes, Expert and Noviceand let the pilots decide w howould run w here. We set a datefour months dow n the road andinvited the other tw o local clubs.

Last Sunday, 21 racers from theEl Paso area, thirteen of w homhad never flow n a race before,came to race. There w ere 12 inexpert and 9 in novice. I tried touse the new NMPRA matr ix pro-gram, but ended up doing the ma-trixes by hand. We flew fourrounds w ith three heats in eachclass starting at 9:00 a.m. andwere done racing, including timeoff for lunch and tw o fly-offs, at1:30. (You w ould be that fast tooif you knew it w as going to be 103in the shade later that after-noon). Every single Novice racerflew a Predator ARF. I canunequivocally state that w ithoutthis plane w e would not have hada race. (Are the other manufactur-ers getting the message?) Wehad Concourse for kit-built, ARFand all around. We had only onemid-air and both fly-offs wentdow n to the last turn on the lastlap w hile the other pilots andvisitors yelled encourage-ment. By the end of the racethere w as enthusiastic support fordoing it again at the end of Sep-tember (w hen it starts to cooldow n in the afternoon in the mid-dle of the desert) w ith the samerules. There w as even talk ofmaking the race a quarterly eventnext year. Great fun was had byall. When all w as said and done,even the "experts" agreed that theengine choice, about w hich therewas much grumbling, w as a goodone.

IT WORKED. If they come backand they w ill, I've got themhooked. It's going to be a w hilebefore I have anyone to race mytw o Jett’s against but w hat theheck; it is fun just to have achance to race.

Hi Racers,

I'm running for the office of Presidentof the NMPRA. I'm about 44 yearsold, with a wife of 12 years, and anearly 8 year old son. Until 2000, Ihad been away from modeling forquite a while. Since coming back intoit, I've been educating myself on mostaspects of RC and participating in thejoys of everything frombackyard and park flyers to AMAclass racers, and from electricairboats to monster trucks. My pre-teen and teen years were filled withpylon racing exposure. My father JimStegall designed, built and sold theStegall Minnow for Formula 1 racingin several versions from around 1970to 1977. I started laying up StegallMinnows when I was about thirteen,and over the next few years I laid upmany if not most of the Minnows, aswell as the Telford and Violettdesigned BobCat that we alsoproduced.

One thing that was true in the 70's issti ll true today. The NMPRA is madeup of an extremely diverse group ofpeople with extremely diverseopinions and goals. The role of Presi-dent of this organization often doesnot make a person especially popularfrom what I have seen and been told.It is difficult to please most people,most of the time, if any of the time.

So why would I want the position?Because I believe I can bring a newstyle of leadership to the organiza-tion. The by-laws allow for thepresident to make executivedecisions, but they also allow thePresident to delegate authority toother officers. If I'm elected, thesignificant decisions will be made byvotes of the District Vice Presidents,not by myself. One thing I have heardfrom many people is that they want asay in the organization. Completemembership votes will be conducted,so that an accurate representation ofthe membership's wishes can beobtained. One thing that must be re-membered is that the AMA PylonRacing Contest Board ultimatelymakes the decisions for all AMA rule-

book events. An accurate showing ofthe membership's wishes goes muchfurther than some phone calls andemails. The District VP's will be heardand they will play a very active andmajor role in the direction of the or-ganization. Even though I am a rela-tive newcomer to modern racing, Ihave some opinions on things thatneed to be done and things that needto remain as they are. These are myopinions, or opinions formed by talk-ing to people about what they wantfor pylon racing. Space does notpermit listing them here, so pleasevisit www.PylonWorld.com for my fullplatform statement.

I have a lot of experience managinglarge diverse groups of people. I be-lieve that I can help pylon in manyways by being the President of theNMPRA. The driving force behind myefforts with the PylonWorld.com website and the PylonWorld forums overthe last year has been to help pylonracing by making it more accessible. Ihave already been working very hardfor pylon racing and I have the energyand the will to continue working ashard as I can for pylon racing. I willnot be at every race. But I will keepmy finger on the pulse of all aspectsof pylon racing. When executive deci-sions are needed, I will make themwith the best knowledge I have beenable to obtain from the VP's and themembership. Dear NMPRA Members,

I am running for the position of thePresident of the NMPRA for 2003.

For the last 25 years, my main hobbyinterest has been aero modeling. Thelast 14 has been dedicated to Pylonracing exclusively. Over the last 10years I have competed both nation-ally and internationally. I have

traveled and competed nearly every-where in the United States and in2001 represented the United Statesat the World Champs in Australiawhere I finished second. Over the last14 years I've had the goodfortune of competing against andbeing associated with such people asClarence Lee, Bob Smith, DaveShadel, Ron Schorr, Lyle Larson,Dub Jett, Pete Reed, Lloyd Burnham,Cliff Telford and numerous others(too many to list). I have learnedmany valuable lessons a s well asrespect and humility from these peo-ple that have and continue to makepylon racing so appealing.

The NMPRA must continue tostrongly support the entry-level pylonracing events. By doing this we caninsure our continued success in thefuture. It is my opinion that theNMPRA should do more to promoteits' image and promote racing atdifferent modeling events such astrade shows and various other aeromodeling events. In 2000 I organizedand ran a booth at the IMS(International Modeling Show) inPasadena, CA. The interest receivedthere was very encouraging and I feelwould be very beneficial to theNMPRA if this could happen moreoften across the nation at some of theother shows.

It is not my intention to run theNMPRA as a dictatorship. Our VP'swill have a strong voice in therunning of the NMPRA. In fact I wouldlike to try to implement asystem of polling the racers at thecontests a s the way of makingdecisions that will affect our racing. Ifeel we should listen to the racerswho are actually attending and par-ticipating at the contests.

When I ask for your vote, I am tryingto make sure that racing, as we knowit, continues to run smoothly in thefuture and insure we still have avenue to play with our toys when theweekend comes.

District 1 – Drew Telford Hi Everyone, Bill Vargas here Simplyput, The NATS was Awesome! Greatturn out, Great flyers and Greatpeople to compete against! OurDistrict was well represented byRandy Bridge, Travis Flynn, Rustyand Mathew Van Buren, Tim Lime,Stu McAfee, Gary Schmidt, FredBurgdorf, Lee Ulinger, Jim Allen andMe. If I missed anyone pleaseforgive me. :)

Congratulations to those that broughtHome, Some NATS Wood!

OK, next on the list,,, I am currentlyworking on a new Race site for usthere at the old El Toro Marine JetFighter Base. The Pylon FlightDemos were flown for the OrangeCounty Modelers Association Boardmembers, by Barry and myself, andthe green light was given to lay downsome ground work for Pylon Racingthere at MCAS El Toro. The wholecourse will be set up over runway16L, there on the over shoot portionof the runway. The good thing aboutthis place,,, Landings! You should beable to land in just about anydirection!This place is huge and all Ican again is AWESOME! More tofollow as the plans develop.

One last, Here's an idea that I wouldlike to float onto you. See what youthink and submit ideas to me and let’shelp out the 424 APRA Racers andNMPRA,,,

*Have a separate point standing forthe 424 class.

For some reason I think when thenew guy figures out he ain t got asnow balls chance in hell, competingfor NMPRA Points, against those thatfly 428,,, they leave and disappearfrom NMPRA.

*424 Racers want a ChampionshipRace at the end of the season.

There are alot of 424 people (futureNMPRA Members) out there, NMPRAshould cater to them,,, they will come!

1) The one Ruling I would suggest,,,is not to ALLOW ANY Top 40 428NMPRA Members to compete in thisclass at the National ChampionshipRace or at any 424 race for thatmatter. If that one person chooses tofly 428 and does well (top 40 orbetter) and yet stil l fl ies 424 then theexception to the above should be per-mitted for the 424 flyer in his first andonly 424 National ChampionshipRace,,, after that, he's to be consid-ered a 428 Racer for the rest of hisRacing venture as a NMPRAmember. I know for some that 424 isthe only game in town,,, That is why Iam floating this idea, to keep thePoints standings separate.

2) NMPRA membership is required tocompete at a NMPRA/APRA 424Championship Race and for theNMPRA/APRA Points standings.

3) The current top 40 NMPRAmembers and from the previous yearstandings shall not be allowed toenter the inaugural ChampionshipRace.

4) The encouragement of DistrictVP's and the President is highlyrecommended to put this together forit to work.

District 2 – Marty Hoppe

Hey there all you fast guys,

We are well into the race season andI must say that the APRA class ofracing is doing better than we hoped.We have had 24 contestants in theclass. Most of them are new flyers.( Keep Up the Good Work, You arethe Future)

Now back to the veterans. The headcount is not doing that great this year.Pylon racing needs its 428 and 422pilots also. In order for the contest towork we need to show up to as manyraces we can. I know we all havelives other thanmodel aircraft but, just look at aschedule and attend the races youcan. It will help us all and you mightjust have some fun. Besides We MissYou.

There are a few of us that areheading down to the North SouthShoot Out. It looks like it will be anoutstanding race! Looking forward tosee you there. Marty

District 3 – Brett Rupert

Hello all.I am happy that I cannot report onany more bad weather here inCalgary. It seems whenever I writethis column there’s a weather crisis

District Newsgoing on. No so this time. Theweather in western Canada has beenextremely hot and dry. For the mostpart it’s been great for racing.

On June 23, 24th we held our annualdistrict race here in Calgary. We had19 entries in Quickie 500. We run theWebra-Q pylon engine on the two milecourse. Popular Quickie kits are theNeme-Q, Revlution, and Hornett.Because our Calgary club does not yethave a set of electronics for the offcourse judging, we ran a hybridversion. We continued with on-coursejudging but we implemented the flores-cent wing band marking system for thejudges. This seemed to make thejudges’ job a lot easier.

As always in Quickie 500 the racingwas very close with lots of good racesbetween pilots. When the smoke hadcleared, six rounds were completed.The results were as follows:1. John Barnsley of Saskatoon flying aRevlution2. Rod Kelln of Regina flying aNeme-Q3. Jim Henderson of Calgary flying aHornettFast Time: Brett Rupert of Saskatoonflying a Revlution 1:13.6

I would like to point out the perform-ance of both John Barnsley and JimHenderson. John has been racing py-lon for several years, but over the lastfive to seven years John has taken asabbatical to pursue a family and acareer. John is just recently workinghis way back into racing and pulled offthe win in Calgary with some consis-tent tight racing.

Jim Henderson is our local Hornett de-signer and manufacturer and always akeen competitor. Jim has been ac-tively racing now for about five yearsand has been chomping at our heelsever since he started going around incircles. Jim has participated in the Ca-nadian Nats in Vancouver and the USNats in Muncie to learn from the best.His keen desire to improve and hoursof practice and attention to detail are

paying off for him. Jim pulled off thethird place to take what I think is hisfirst trophy in our district. Great jobJim ! There’s more where those camefrom. Your caller’s not bad either……

On Sunday we flew Q40 with 14 en-tries. Race times in Calgary tend to beslower due to the altitude (3500 ft) andthe fact that, with our grass flying field,we must use plywood sheets as takeoffboards. This results in a steeper thandesired takeoff from the ground and, ofcourse, a slower ten lap time.

Q40 was a disaster for myself. I endedup losing two of my Miss Candaces.One to a mechanical pushrod failureon the elevator (dumb) and the secondto a mid air collision. The damagefrom the mechanical failure is repair-able but she’ll never be the same. LyleBaker from Saskatoon and myselftagged each other over the numberone pylon yet again. Lyle and I havebeen racing each other for over 20years and whenever we meet eachother at the line we cringe and pledgeto stay out of each other’s way. Itnever seems to work out……

We completed six rounds of racing andwere in the middle of seven when thethunderstorms rolled in and the skiesopened up. The race was called andwinners declared:

Greetings Racers!

I did not receive any race reportsfor District 4 since the lastnew sletter was issued so unfortu-nately there is nothing new to re-port. With that being the case, I’lltake this opportunity to give a briefdescription of a new flying sitelocated w ithin District 4.

The site is new , how ever the clubthat f lies there is not. It is the Ar-vada Associated Modeler’s newfield located northw est of DenverColorado. The new field is approxi-mately five miles w est of theirformer flying site. The new locationbecame necessary when their oldfield began to be developed forhousing, a situation that is all toocommon these days.

It is too bad that this site does notlend itself to a racing program. Thesite is beautiful.

Pylon racing is now well underw ayin the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeastregions. The NEPRO group for-warded a copy of their newsletter tome, and it appears they have beenvery active in promoting the 424event using the Thunder TigerPro .40 engine. A number of us fromthe PGRC look forw ard to crossingthe Mason-Dixon Line and doingbattle the w eekend of August 3-4 inEllington, CT. Hope to see youthere.

A number of us from District 6 at-tended the 2002 Nationals in Mun-cie. The competition w as indeedfierce, with 77 entries in Q-500, and68 in Q-40, both up from last year.The level of competit ion in theseevents w as outstanding, w ith toughmatrixes, no matter w hich one youended up in. The number of mid-airsand crashes was well below the pre-vious year, thanks in part to low erwinds, less crossw ind, and tougherto hit pylons (no rope supports)thanks to Don Stegall. All I can askis, “w here were your pylons lastyear, Don?”

District NewsSeveral typical “shoe-ins” for thefinals failed to make the cut in theirmatrix. Lloyd Burnham how ever,made it into the finals in bothevents; My son Jonathan made itinto Q-40, and missed the Q-500cutoff by only .03 seconds. We’llget you next time, Darrol!

All in all, the Nats experienceserves as the best way to bench-mark your abilities and know ledgeagainst a tough field of racers, andI highly recommend it. We allcame aw ay from it w ith a muchclearer idea of our strengths andweaknesses, and the lessonslearned w ill no doubt pay bigdividends in our local races.

Locally, the PGRC Club of Bow ie,MD has already hosted 3Quickie500 contests (both 424and 428) as w ell as the JR GoldCup Series race in May. Our 424program seems to be grow ing; theJune race w as attended by 19contestants; the July race had 21contestants, w ith 4 plane heats.We have also had several newflyers take up racing includingGreg Brew er, Steven Poretz, and18 year old Tom LeCour, w ho hasonly been in the hobby sinceFebruary! Chalk that last one up tolots of time on the Realf light .

It’s up to us as individuals to pro-mote our sport. One person will notmake a difference but a team effortwill control our future. The coregroup of racerswe now have isstrong. Wew ill survive and grow.You have to decidewhat role you

will accept during this growth periodand support your District.

The segmentation theAMA hasundergone in the last several yearshas created some exciting classesand world class flyers. We cansatisfy our need for toys by pilotinga competition big bird, impressingthe onlookers by steadying ourhelicopter inches above the ground,chewing the ribbon off anothercompetitors control line combatplan, or bending the poles on apylon course.

How ever, segmenting the marketalso seems to have segmented thepilots. When Ifirst started flyingabout 10 years ago, Ifelt like Ibelonged to a special group. All R/C pilots were a part of one singulargroup. We visited with each otherat the fields, talked one commonlanguage, and loved all airplanes.We might not have understood eachother’s choice of R/C, but we knewwe shared a common experienceand attitude.

But as the market divided intospecial segments, pilots seem tohave narrowed their concepts ofcommunity. I f ly sport airplanes asmuch as possible and the oldfriendships are still there, but I can’tseem to shake the feeling that I amregarded differently now that I race.

Unless we show interest in otherdisciplines, we should never expectthem to show interest in ours. Wemay conceive control line flyers asold stuff while they think flyingaround poles can’t be fun, or theaverage sport pilot as too slow andboring while they feel we are crazyfor risking a thousand dollar airplanejust to go fast. It’s not until we makeour presence knownwith interest inthem that theywill open up to usand begun to understand how muchfunwe have.

Personally, Iwonder how anyonecan continue his interest in R/C byconcentrating on only one segmen-tation. You need to experienceseveral of these disciplines to enjoywhat theworld of R/C has to offer.

Recently at the flying field, therewas one guy demonstrating hisexpertise flying gliders. Hislauncher would catapult his planehigh in the air as he struggled tocatch thermals needed to extend hisflying time. I could tell this was verytechnical and required excellentbuilding skills, f lying ability, and theunderstanding of currents to besuccessful. How canwe expect thisperson to show interest in racingunless we show interest in him?This is what I mean by promotingour sport. We need to be a groupthat looks as if we are having funand that joining us is the cool thingto do.

So the next time you go to yourfield, visit with a different group, f ly adifferent pattern, show interest insomething you never paid muchattention to before. Who knows,you might make a new friend whiledeveloping respect for a newdiscipline. The next time you see anR/C pilot demonstrate his skills youwill know that he is having as muchfun as you are. It may not bew iththe same equipment butwith thesame heart.

Now is the time to step up and be-come an active member of yourdistrict and the NMPRA. Each oneof us possesses unique qualitiesthat can benefit the growth of yourdistrict. With the inception and pushto promote 424 racing through outthe country,we have a good start tomake pylon racing the envy of allAMA SIG groups.

It starts with each individual and hisdesire to see that we do not becomestale, but stay focused on growth,fun, and excitement. Don’t ask whatthe NMPRA can do for you, but whatyou can do for the NMPRA.

My future is my responsibil ity.

The number of entries in 424 directlyrelates to our future success. Unlessall racers are committed to increasingthese numbers, our future may al-ready be here. It takes a total groupcommitment to insure victory. (Thisreport will continue next issue.)

June 8-9, Brazoria, TXBrazoria County Modelers Associa-tion is blessed with a great group ofhard working members who supportracing with enthusiasm and look for-ward to the income possibilities ofthese events. This year they will hostthree events, two sportsman races,and one district race. Besides beinga dependable racing supporter, theyhave a great flying field. The closesttree has to be at least a mile away.The only draw back is landing outsideof the fenced flying area; the mosqui-toes are more aggressive than atoothless dog in a dogfight. Theirsecond race this year was held

June 8-9th. Our turn out was disap-pointing with only 33 entries for bothdays. Many thanks to those whodrove long distances to attend theevent. Saturday crashes kept Sun-day’s entries low, but the fun contin-ued.

Rick Cranfill, encouraged to return toracing with the inception of our SportRacing events, took his first 428 vic-tory on Saturday after a three way fly-off with Mike Helsel who finished sec-ond and Mike Hammett who finishedthird.

The 424 class finished with RickyCranfill taking top honors and DafyddBevil and Tony Dupaquier finishingtheir day early with crashes.

Quarter 40 – Barry Leavengood

The 2002 Pylon Nats are a donedeal. I was unable to attend due tobusiness commitments but wasinformed by all I asked that it was agreat well run contest. I would like tothank the AMA, Mike Condon and hisstaff for putting on this contest eachyear. Great job guys. Q40 was wonby Randy Bridge followed by JimAllen, Mike Helsel and Travis Flynn.The complete results for both Q40and Q500 can be found on theNMPRA web site. I believe the Natsis the single most important contest ofthe year and we should all try andattend. Sonia and I are already

making plans for next year.The next JR Gold race is scheduledfor the weekend of Sept 7th and 8th atWhittier Narrows California. Therewere rumors circulating at the Natsthat the Whittier race was beingcancelled due to an incident a coupleof months ago when a pylon pilot gota ticket for a safety violation whileflying around himself. The ticket wasdue to a misunderstanding of thesafety regulations and will have noaffect on the race. The San GabrielValley RC League is looking forwardto putting on the race. The Whittier field isone of the nicest around and it shouldbe a fantastic race. A flyer for therace will be posted on the NMPRAweb site shortly. APC carbon fiberprops will be permitted at this race.

I have yet to receive the results ofany Q40 races with the exception of asingle report from district 8. It is up toevent CD’s to insure the results oftheir races get shipped off to thedistrict VP’s. Let’s get them in guysso I can compile the points foryear-end awards.

2002 Nats - Mike Condon

I would like to thank everyone who par-ticipated in the Nats for 2002. Theworkers were second to none. Most ofthem worked all week, all day. Thismade my job much easier. The pilotsand callers did just about everythingthat was asked of them.These are the

some reasons why I will continue toundertake the task of hosting the Nats.I would like to say in my defense thatsome of the demands made by mewere handed down by the AMA safetyregulators. They have a job to do tosatisfy their insurance representativeson site. I feel this is a small sacrifice onour part to assure the success of thegreatest race of the year. Your contin-ued 100% cooperation on this issue(with a smile) will be greatlyappreciated.

I will not single out any one personwho helped with the responsibility ofworking the Nats, for fear of leavingsomeone out. Everyone did anexcellent job. There are two peoplethat I will mention due to the fact thatthey made a greater sacrifice thenmost. During the process of splittingthe matrix into two groups, I overlooked the Starter assignments for A/Bin QM40.I had both Starters in the Amatrix. Rick Moreland and Chic Whiteoffered to withdrawal from flying andtake on the position of Starter andAssistant Starter. They did a great job.We owe them both,“big” thanks!!

There was a little grumbling about thesplitting of the matrix as far as pilotswere concerned. This issue will beaddressed next year with a selectcommittee to over seeing that the A/Bare split more evenly.

As for the 2003 Nationals, your inputfor making the Nats a continuedsuccess will be appreciated. I havelistened in the past to your input andhave used all that I felt was good forthe events. Next year will see somenew ideas that are planned to makethe Nats an even better event. We arelooking on having pre-registration on-site rather then at the school asbefore. A catered dinner onsite afterflying is also being looked into. Theselected CAPS committee that puts allof this together, will continue to assurethat all is being done to make sure thatall of you that take the time to attendthe greatest pylon race of all, have agood week.

Mike Helsel finished with a total of220.9 over both events. This greatperformance was second to the totalset by the winner with 222.8. Adifference of only 1.9!! On this note wecongratulate the defending NationalPylon Champion for 2002....RANDYBRIDGE!! His name will be added tothe trophy being displayed in thetrophy in the AMA museum.
