Walter W. Stein

Walter has been exploring for, excavating,

preparing, researching and writing about dinosaurs

and other vertebrate fossils since 1996. He has a BS

degree in Geology from Appalachian State University

in Boone, North Carolina. He was the former Curator

and co-designer of the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Re-

source Center (in Woodland Park, CO), President of

the Bighorn Basin Foundation, Collections Manager

for the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, Field Collections

Manager for Triebold Paleontology (the #1 or #2 pri-

vate commercial paleontological company in the

world), on the board of Directors for the Tri-State

Museum and then later Interim-Director of the Mu-

seum. Walter is also the former cofounder and chair-

man of the Association of Applied Paleontological

Sciences (AAPS) ―Journal of Paleontological Sciences‖.

Walter has worked on and/or discovered well over 25

important dinosaur skeletons including a new species

of giant North American Oviraptor (head preparator/

excavator) and a potentially new species of Tyranno-

saur (discoverer). He has also worked on numerous

other vertebrate finds including, the largest mosasaur

ever found in Texas, the first ever plesiosaur bone

bed from Montana and a very rare, shortnecked ple-

siosaur (one of two of its species). In between, the

big discoveries, Walter has authored a handful of sci-

entific papers and has written two books on the study

of paleontology; ―So You Want to Dig Dino-

saurs‖ (2001) and another called, ―The Top 256 Rules

of Paleontology‖ (April, 2009).

Walter and his wife Heather started their own private

paleontological company called ―PaleoAdventures‖ in

2005. PaleoAdventures provides a wide range of ser-

vices to the education, museum, and tourist related

industries, including Dinosaur dig site tours, com-

mercial internet fossil sales, lectures and educational

programs for schools, clubs and museums, museum

consultation and exhibit design, molding and casting,

contract fossil preparation, paleontological resource

assessments, and much, much more.

Walter and Heather have two young boys; William

(age 10) and Stephen (age 5) that keep them very

busy. The Stein’s have been snow-birding down to

North Port, Florida since 2009.

Over the last year, Walter has worked with the An-

cient Waters Foundation in North Port, as their pale-

ontological chairman. This organization is dedicated

to educating the public about the wonderful archaeo-

logical and paleontological significance of Warm Min-

eral Springs and Little

Salt Springs.

Walter’s overall goal is

to someday build his

own private paleon-

tological museum

right here in North

Port Florida.

BEGINNERS TRIP. By Chuck Ferrara

It was a foggy morning drive to Arcadia. There was a chill in the air and the weather report was for a quick warm up. This was expected by all as last year’s Beginners trip was a cold one. The Rockhills were the first to arrive 5 min after I got there Mallory, Gabrielle, and Paul were ready to go. The rest trickled in- John Purcell, Mike, Irene Matthews, John Hacht, Randy, Sue Sassie, Don, Mary Ann Heathcote. Even Ron Seavey showed up later -13 in all. One of the fun things to see is everyone’s design of a screen box. It’s great to see all the creative ideas. This group didn't dis-appoint as we started by critiquing and comparing ideas - what will work and won't almost like the boy scouts soap-box Derby " my car is faster then yours, mines prettier. Then the time came to see. After a talk on rules of the Fossil Permit, ethics and about respect of wildlife it was off to the water. All designs floated nicely. I showed all how to work with the current work a hole sifting tech-nique. All were fine. Everyone agreed this was a good way to test their equipment and make changes. The Rockhills were my leverite collectors, but I remember when I first started- anything that looked remotely like a fossil I picked up. That's how you learn. " it’s a leverite where you found it ". All found some nice small teeth, clam concretions, puffer fish mouthpiece. John Hacht found some nice bird bones, whole horse teeth & Ivory. Yours truly found a nice Mako and much more. The water was a foot higher then used to with a nice current and the weather men were right for a change. It was sunny and a great day to be in the River - sharing and learning with fossil friends. We have trips on the River for this month so sign up and come join the fun and live the adventure.
