Welcome…...to the 2016 programme of events
celebrating Dorset’s rich architectural
heritage. This is a chance to visit
buildings not normally open to the
public, to go on guided walks, hear
talks and generally enjoy the County’s
rich historic environment.
The programme’s content is totally
reliant on the goodwill of the building
owners throughout the County. If you
own a building with a story to tell and
would like to take part in future years,
please contact us to discuss it.
I hope you will find the week exciting,
interesting and worthwhile and I would
welcome any feedback or comments
you would like to make.
On behalf of all the event holders and
the DAHW Team, have a wonderful
week and enjoy everything that Dorset
has to offer.

What’s Happening in 2016…Hello To One Old Favourite & Goodbye To AnotherThis year sees the return to the programme
of an old favourite - the most popular
building in the history of DAHW according
to our 20th Anniversary poll - The Boat
House (Event 40). This unique Poole
property looks like a normal building from
the outside but step through the doors
and you will find yourself in the Second
Class Drawing Room from the Cunard
liner “Mauretania”! The Boat House is also
joined by its new neighbour, The House
Boat (Event 39), an experimental new build
that takes inspiration from two upturned
boat hulls in blackened larch sitting on a
rough concrete sea wall.
As The Boat House re-joins Heritage Week
2016 will be the last opportunity to view
another old favourite. From October The
Royal Naval Cordite Factory (Event 46) will
be closing its doors to the public so the
tours on Saturday will be the final chance to
get up close with this piece of military and
local history.

A Word From Our Sponsor
It gives me great pleasure to introduce
the 2016 Dorset Architectural Heritage
Week’s range of activities, events, walks
and talks that will explore and celebrate
Dorset’s rich wonderful heritage and long
history.
The DAHW team have worked hard to
develop a stimulating and interactive
programme for the whole family so
please take full advantage and make the
most of this opportunity to visit places
that are not normally on the tourist map.
Please remember that many events are
extremely popular and have a limited
number of spaces allocated by ballot.
So don’t forget to send your booking
form in as soon as you can.
It is always great to receive feedback
from our visitors so please do get in
touch and let the team know about your
experiences in Dorset.
Looking forward to seeing you there,

(and, in the unlikely event of any problems on the day, may also be supplied to the police
or insurance company) but will not be passed on to anyone else. Anyone found supplying
a false address, or refusing to provide one, will be excluded from all current events and will
not be eligible for any future ballots.
Whichever method you choose please ensure that your application reaches the

04 Deans Court Guided Tour
Directions available on ticket.
Please use public car parks
Bookable - 30 per tour
The tour brings to life the 1,300 year story of a manor house at the centre of a rural English community, as it passed from the Saxon and Medieval Church to a family of adventurers, politicians and soldiers who have occupied it for nearly 500 years. As visitors are led through the house, the triumphs and tragedies of the inhabitants are revealed using the long run of portraits, while architecture, taste and social history are explored en route. The tour of the ancient gardens provides much to delight the eye, from the monastic fishpond, herb garden and mature specimen trees to the serpentine walls around the flourishing kitchen garden.
Admission strictly to holders of valid tickets. There is no entry to the grounds on the day for anyone without a valid ticket.

05 Silk Hay Guided Tour
Directions available on ticket.
Bookable - 10 per tour
Silk Hay is a substantial L-shaped Dorset stone house, lovingly restored over a period of 30 years. Having inherited her mother’s house, Hilary Townsend, soon discovered there was more to it than met the eye – a medieval hall house with a Tudor extension, needing much attention. After labouring over the renovation of this intriguing house Hilary now welcomes those who are interested in our heritage to learn about it. From beautiful craftsmanship to medieval graffiti, the story of this house is a powerful inspiration to anyone who loves old buildings

Directions available on ticket.
Bookable - 6 per tour
A rare opportunity to experience a double Anderson Air Raid Shelter dating back to the Second World War. Designed in 1938, and named after Sir John Anderson (Lord Privy Seal with special responsibility for air-raid preparation), the shelters were a common sight in the gardens of Britain during the War, with over 3 million being distributed by the Home Office. After the War most of the shelters were reclaimed for metal salvage and many of those that remained in-situ were converted into storage units or garden sheds.
The owner will be on hand during the visits to answer any questions.
The steps down are steep and leading into darkness so are unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems. There are no lights
within the shelter so visitors may wish to bring a torch

37 Four Winds New EventGuided Tour
Directions available on ticket.
Bookable - 10 per tour
Built about 1989, before the advent of television programmes such as ‘Grand Designs’, Four Winds was a self-build like no other. Embracing sustainability with Solar Panels, triple glazing, passive solar heating and heat recovery ventilation, this one-off design was state-of-the art. And much of the technology is still relevant today, giving the house a ‘B’ energy rating – the highest achievable for the age of the house.
Four Winds was designed to make best use of the site, with Southerly facing balconies, panoramic windows and a hidden jewel of a basement where the house sits on a gradient. The house was designed and built by the then owner, and was lived in for 30 years until the new owners bought it last year.
Two steps access into house with internal staircase to upper floor. Steep gradient to the basement to see pump room.

The House Boat is a newly commissioned house by developer Solidspace with Mole Architects, located on a site overlooking Poole Harbour. 41 BelmontHeritage Open Day 6A Pound St, Lyme Regis DT7 3HZ
Please use public car parks
This fine 18th-century maritime villa in Lyme Regis is listed Grade II* and once belonged to the remarkable businesswoman, Mrs Eleanor Coade who devised a formula to mass produce architectural embellishments. More recently Belmont was home to world-famous author, John Fowles, author of The Magus and The French Lieutenant’s Woman.
Belmont has been restored to its appearance in Mrs Coade’s day. Here you can sit - and indeed write – in John Fowles’s former writing room with its wide views of sea and sky. In the garden there is a Victorian observatory tower, with hatch and revolving roof. Most of the long garden is left wild (Fowles was a keen naturalist) and it tumbles down to the esplanade, with a pebble beach and the Cobb beyond.
The Landmark Trust are so grateful to everyone who supported Belmont, helping us to raise a total of £1.8m and are very pleased that Belmont won the RICS Building Conservation Award for the South -West region
Open on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th from 10am until 4pm

Why are some events bookable and not others?
Often the properties have very limited
space and a booking system gives us
greater control over the number of people
attending at any one time. It also means
that householders have a list of attendees
to satisfy their insurance companies.
Likewise, event leaders giving talks or tours
find it easier to deal with smaller groups.
Why do tickets have to be allocated by ballot, what’s wrong with first come first served?
Unfortunately the old first come first served
system favoured those visitors who were
retired or not in full time work and by the
end of the Booking Office’s first day, many
events were already full. By making all of
the bookable events ballotable everyone
has the same chance of getting tickets.
Why can’t the event be 2 weeks / 1 month?
The logistics of organising all of the
events into a 9 day period, along with the
typesetting and printing process, already
take up much of the year. It wouldn’t be
practical at this time.
Why don’t all events have a duration listed?
Some event holders like to have a more
relaxed attitude towards their event and
leave the timing open-ended to answer
extra questions or take account of weather
conditions. Whenever a duration can be
listed it is.
Could you not put on extra events rather than have a waiting list?
Unfortunately not. The preparations already
take several months. By the time the
bookings are received and the events start
to fill up, there is no longer sufficient time
left to organise extra events. In addition
to which, last minute changes could place
unnecessary stress on event holders and
they always have the final say on any
events.
Why can’t the booklet be published earlier in the year?
Again, due to the length of time it takes to
organise all of the events, it is not possible
to publish the booklet any earlier in the
year.
Why can’t I have a direct contact number for my favourite event?
All of the event holders in Heritage Week
are volunteers and a great many of them
are private householders. In order to
protect their privacy and ensure smooth
communications at all times we ensure
that we are the only contact with all 200
event holders on our list and we never
pass on any private contact details unless
specifically instructed to do so.
Can I just turn up to bookable events without a ticket on the off chance someone doesn’t turn up?
We would respectfully ask that you do
NOT. Although it can be frustrating finding
out that there has been a ‘no-show’ on an
event it is even more frustrating for event
holders trying to deal with too many people
who have just turned up ‘on spec’.

N Why not organise adjacent events on the same day so we can visit them all?
Again, all of the events are organised on a
voluntary basis by people who give up their
own time to lead them. It is up to them
when they feel able to lead an event, not
us.
Why is my favourite event no longer on the programme? Will it be coming back?
Once again, all of the events are organised
on a voluntary basis by people who give up
their own time to lead them. Sometimes
after leading an event for many years they
decide that enough is enough and inform
us accordingly. Sometimes, the various
properties change hands and the new
owners do not want to take part and again
we are informed accordingly.
Why do you not offer online booking?
This is for security reasons. When making
online bookings for tickets, concerts or
events you need to provide your payment
card details as well as your contact details.
This gives the venue your registered
cardholder details so they can contact
you in the event of any problems with the
booking. As all DAHW events are free of
charge this method of address verification is
not available to us so we verify all potential
visitors’ addresses by sending out the tickets
to them at the address they have provided.
The address provided is supplied to the
relevant event holder (and may be passed
on to the police or insurance company) but
under the terms of the Data Protection Act
will not be given to anyone else.
Why have some people been to very popular events more than once while I have been on waiting lists for many years?
Unfortunately this is purely down to the
luck of the draw! We would hope that
visitors who have already been lucky
enough to get tickets for popular events do
not try and book again in subsequent years
and give other people a chance. Sadly this
is not always the case!
What is the connection between DAHW and Heritage Open Days?
Heritage Open Days takes place over the
course of a long weekend. Dorset took
part in the early events but soon realised
that the potential number of events in
Dorset was increasing each year and that
one weekend was not sufficient. As such,
Dorset Architectural Heritage Week was
born with the first weekend a part of
Heritage Open Days.
Would it not help administration to make a charge for some events?
It probably would! Unfortunately a basic
principle of Heritage Week is that all events
should be free of charge. We only ever
make minor charges where it is completely
unavoidable - such as those to cover coach
or boat hire.
Why don’t you ‘blackball’ or ban people who persistently don’t turn up to events they have booked?
Again, one of the basic principles of the
event is accessibility. If we blocked certain
people from attending events for any
reason then we would be ignoring this
underlying principle.

46 The Last Laugh Holton Heath Royal Naval Cordite Factory Tour Guided Tour
Directions available on ticket.
Bookable - 40 per tour
The Royal Naval Cordite Factory at Holton Heath represents a substantial piece of the industrial and military heritage of this country. The factory was constructed under the express instruction of the then First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. It was to supply the Royal Navy with propellant until 1957 when cordite manufacturing on the site ceased and was transferred to ROF Caerwent. The site continued to serve the navy in the guise of the Admiralty Materials Laboratories, developing and testing various technical innovations.
During the event visitors will have one last opportunity to view the amazing scale model of the factory (described as a national treasure) and other artefacts from the factory.
During the afternoon there will be veterans of the factory on hand to answer questions and tours will be run throughout the afternoon, by experienced tour guides, around the extant remains of the factory. Should you wish you can also visit the recently installed memorial (situated on nearby Blackhill Road) to the calamitous explosion that occurred in 1931.
The event involves a fair degree of walking and those with limited mobility may find completing the whole tour difficult. Furthermore, there is no disabled access to the museum and model.
Please note, this will regrettably be the last such event at this site. As of October 1st all public access will be prohibited.

Meet in the Thorncombe Wood car park, which is signposted from the visitor centre
Please check the Dorset Countryside website at https://www.dorsetforyou.com/Hardysbirthplace for the latest news on the centre and the car parking arrangements
A guided tour of the ‘Hardy’s Birthplace’ visitor centre and its setting, led by the person who managed the project for Dorset County Council and had responsibility for its funding, development and construction.
The building was opened in September 2014 to serve both the National Trust owned cottage 300 metres away where author and poet Thomas Hardy was born, and the Dorset County Council owned Thorncombe Wood on the edge of which it sits, where Hardy spent a lot of his youth.
The guide will lead you through the Wood to the centre explaining key landscape features, their relevance to Hardy and the building, and the interpretation which explains them. He will include stories behind the building and the ‘green’ technologies embedded within it, which have been recognised with an international award.
The tour will conclude with opportunities for a visit to Hardy’s cottage (National Trust charges apply), and lunch either in the café at the centre or a bring-your-own picnic.
Those with mobility issues may find some of the walking through Thorncombe Wood awkward.
