Origins1958:

1975:

IBM researcher Hans Peter Luhn defines business intelligence: "The ability to apprehend the interrelationships of presented facts in such a way as to guide action towards a desired goal."

Gerry Cohen founds Information Builders.

1976: Jim Goodnight founds SAS.

1983: Information Builders introduces PC Focus.

1989: Future Gartner Group analyst Howard Dresner defines business intelligence: "Concepts and methods to improve business decision making by using fact-based support systems."

1989: Michael Saylor, Sanju Bansal, & Thomas Spahr found MicroStrategy.
