PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE This week we commenced our First Week of Lent, with students participating in the Ash Wednesday Mass. I was

very impressed by their participation, even answering Father’s questions before he asked them! Lent is a time for self-reflection and to think about what you can do for others. Jade introduced the Project Compassion focus for this year and I know the students really took on board how important it is to be able to help others out. Their discussion about social justice was really thoughtful. I don’t know if anyone is a ‘GoggleBox’ fan but I watched the tail end of it last night. In the ‘Human Planet’ segment it was heartening to see how much empathy the families had for the Nepalese family in the documentary but it certainly highlighted how fortunate we are in Australia—we don’t have to risk our lives or our children’s lives to get to school like the Nepalese father did. Each grade has a Project Compassion box and students are asked to bring in any change/money (with parent’s permission) to raise money to support those who are less fortunate than us and to help Caritas work for a fair and just world. I hope everyone will get on board with this.

FAREWELL TO FATHER HOWIE We will be farewelling Father after a special Mass on Monday, 26th February, at 9.30am and then morning tea afterwards. This will give the students, families and staff an opportunity to say goodbye. We have appreciated everything that he has done for us and the commitment he has shown to our school and parish community.

BIG PANCAKE BREAKFAST We had a beautiful morning for Pancake Day on Tuesday and it was lovely for families to be able to sit outside and enjoy the delicious pancakes, fresh fruit, maple syrup, cream and sprinkles for our Pancake Breakfast.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS & VOLUNTEERS All workers and volunteers at any Catholic School in our Diocese are required to have this check as a minimum safety measure. We strongly encourage all parents to obtain their WWCC card.

We will also be holding a session for volunteers to work through what is expected of our volunteers and what they can expect from us. This briefing will become a requirement if people

wish to volunteer at St Michael’s.

STEWARDSHIP Stewardship is defined as the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care; Catholic stewardship is about looking after our God-given resources so that our relationship with God and each other is enhanced. Not only are we responsible for the world we live in, we are responsible for each other. Stewardship is about living a Christ-centred life rather than a self-centred life. As the U.S. Catholic bishops said in Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response: “A Christian steward is one who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others and returns them with increase to the Lord.” It is in all of us to make a difference!

SWIMMING CARNIVAL & HOUSE SPIRIT Our House Captains are showing a lot of initiative as they galvanise their teams in preparation for the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday. They have been busy getting organized with chants, motivational speeches and cheer squad paraphernalia. On Monday afternoon they will be having House Meetings to finalise things for the big day! The captains will have coloured zinc and possibly coloured hairspray (non-aerosol) and have asked if their team can wear it if they want to. Please send a note via Class Dojo or in person to your child’s class teacher to say that you give permission for your child to wear this—anyone without permission won’t be permitted to wear it.

The Swimming Carnival is on Tuesday at 11.00am at the Heyfield Pool. Please let us know if you are available to help out.

WELCOME BBQ & BIG BOOTBALL CHALLENGE We had a great time at our Welcome BBQ last Friday and added in a Big Bootball Challenge for a bit of fun. It was kids versus adults which in itself was very entertaining. The

adults were very competitive (there was a red card given out) however the kids ended up victorious. Maybe next year !

GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL & RESOURCE CENTRE The Heyfield Community Resource Centre and the Good Friday Appeal are holding a Pedal to Parks fundraiser on Sunday, 4th March. Money is collected through sponsorship and all proceeds go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital. We have sponsorship forms for this which we will send home to families if you would like your child or children to participate.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP We are always very pleased at the number of students who are willing to put their hands up for leadership roles within the school. Student leadership plays a very im-portant role within our school community. Our school cap-tains this year are Jackson and Ella and our vice-captains are Lexi and Hunter. We’re sure they will be terrific role models for our students.

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCES With new legislation being passed by the Victorian govern-ment regarding school absences there will be changes to our attendance policy. As per usual, all absences must be explained to the teacher or principal prior to or after the absence via a written note, phone call or electronically. New legislation requires a phone call be made home to families, if a child does not present to school on any given day. The school is obliged to monitor and follow up any patterns of regular absenteeism. You are requested to seek an exemption if planning an extended holiday. A written note must be provided to the school principal prior to the event. Please make sure that you make every effort to get your child to school on time—our official cut off time for a stu-dent being deemed absent is 8.50am.

PARENT INFORMATION SESSION: READING WITH YOUR CHILD On Thursday, 1st March, at 7pm there will be an infor-mation session for parents about reading with your child. This is a great opportunity to find out how you can support your child with their reading and ask any questions you might have about your child’s literacy learning.

P & F AGM P & F held their AGM last night and new office bearers were elected. Rohan Christian was elected as President and Luke Mahoney as the School Board Representative. Carly Moulton agreed to continue as the Treasurer and we are yet to find a Secretary. I’d like to thank our office bear-ers, Anita Mezenberg and Sharon Tohara, who stepped down from their roles. We have greatly appreciated their commitment and willingness to take on this responsibility as P & F can’t function without people prepared to take on leadership. We know that they will continue to be active Committee members and we thank our new office bearers for taking up this responsibility.

UNIFORM REMINDER Please take note that our uniform policy states that the only jewellery allowed is stud earrings, sleepers and watches. This is for safety reasons. Children will be asked to remove other jewellery and keep it in their bag. Special consideration is given for students who require jewellery for specific reasons but parents must come and see the principal about this.

CHURCH CLEANING ROSTER Church cleaning is rostered for the first Thursday of the month between 2pm and 4pm. Four families will be rostered on so that it can be given a thorough clean under the premise of ‘many hands make light work’. The church key can be obtained from the office. If you are unable to help on your rostered day you might like to come in and do some cleaning during the week or arrange a swap with someone. We know it is not always easy to help at the nominated time.
