A Unique School of Aviation

Lund University School of Aviation (LUSA) is the only university in Europe and one of the few in the world that offers a fully Inte-grated Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) training programme. The programme encompasses allaspects of theory and practice.

The school was established by the Swedish AirForce in 1984 with the specific objective oftraining pilots for commercial aviation. Theschool became a department of Lund Univer-sity in 1998. Approximately 450 pilots have so far completed the integrated programme - accredited by SAS, Scandinavia’s largest air-line. Most of the graduates now work for SAS, whereas some work for other regional or inter-national airlines.

University and Aviation Centre

The dynamic world of aviation requires thatLUSA maintains a high level of competence in every aspect of training. Some of the in-structors at LUSA also work as flight crew incommercial airlines. As part of the university, LUSA are able to exploit its network of contacts and expertise to the benefit of all involved.

Airline Transport Pilot training is just one of a number of aviation related programmes;

other courses include a Flight Instructor Pro-gramme, ATP distance learning, dedicated training for the Swedish Armed Forces, Swed-ish Coastguard and Swedish Police as well as customised courses in Multi Crew Coop-eration (MCC), Crew Resource Management (CRM) and management.

LUSA has a Research & Development (R&D) programme in the field of Human Factors inAviation and a Professorship in Human Fac-tors and Aviation Safety; a Masters programme in Human Factors will be introduced in the near future.

LUSA’s vision is to be a centre for flight andflight related training, a vision that is clearlysupported by the R&D programme.

First-Class Equipment

To support the flight and flight related train-ing programmes, LUSA maintains a fleet ofaircraft comprising Cirrus SR20s and Piper Navajo PA31s. LUSA also has a number of synthetic flight trainers including a Beech 200simulator for MCC courses. Excellent lecture halls complement the practical training facili-ties.

Top Skilled Pilots

Since 1984, the Integrated ATP programme has played a central role at LUSA. The pro-gramme provides the students with knowl-edge, skills and attitudes necessary for a suc-cessful career in the aviation industry and encourages them to continue with their com-petence development. In addition to the JAR-FCL requirements the ATP programme en-closes aerobatics, a thesis, physical education and management training.

On graduation, the students have acquired a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Instru-ment and Multi-Engine Rating and a frozen Airline Transport Pilot theory (ATPL) quali-fication that meets JAR-FCL requirements.Students also earn 120 ETCS Credits, and are awarded a University Diploma – Air TrafficPilot.

Approximately 400 candidates apply for the ATP programme every year. Applicants are screened and asked to take the same ability tests given to prospective Swedish fighter pi-lots.

Candidates who pass the tests are invited to an interview. On completion, the applicants are ranked according to their test and interview results and successful candidates- about 2.5 percent of all annual applicants- are offered aplace on the programme.

The selection procedure enables the school toensure that the students are most appropriate for pilot training and for a future successful career as an airline flight crew member.

SAS has had a close relationship with LUSA and its graduated students since the establishment of LUSA. SAS has to a great extent been one of the major influencerof the content and philosophy of the Ab-initio training at LUSA aiming at pursuing a future airline flight crew career. We are very satisfied with the highly skilled pilotsfrom LUSA and we are looking forward to a continuing cooperation with LUSA.

Johan WestinChief Pilot of Malmö Aviation, Airline of the Year in Sweden 2004 & 2005.

We have and have had several pilots employed that received their initial pilot train-ing at LUSA. It’s easy to have a pilot trainee from LUSA, they are always well taught and through their selection process you know what you get.

Lund University has a long tradition of scientific excellence. The School of Aviationrepresents a unique platform for operationally informed and oriented research, rang-ing from human performance to organizational safety. Research is linked tightly with education, with critical insights carried over into MCC, HPL and other cours-es taught at LUSA.
