“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever the cost, but the urge to serve others whatever the cost.” – Arthur Ashe

LET IT BE KNOWN, That we are deeply saddened by the loss of Master Sergeant Gregory T. Kuhse. We extend this token of our appreciation to celebrate his life and to honor his sacrifice. Master Sergeant Kuhse exhibited a passion for life that others around him had never seen. His positive attitude and encouraging spirit left a mark on all who met him. His leadership was strong and Master Sergeant Kuhse was a true example to his platoon, his friends and his family.

Born to Joseph and Linda Kuhse in 1977, Master Sergeant Kushe grew up as a Kalamazoo County native. Master Sergeant Kuhse was raised in Comstock Township with his two siblings, Michael and Patricia. After graduating from Comstock High School in 1995, Master Sergeant Kuhse pursued his Associate’s Degree in Information Resources Management and Human Resource Management in Management Engineering Technology at the Community College of the Air Force. Called to serve, Master Sergeant Kuhse worked as an Information Resources Manager and Manpower Analyst with the United States Air Force for over 19 years. Master Sergeant Kuhse was deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan to help train and assist local police and military forces in counter-terrorism efforts under Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL. He enjoyed working with his fellow Airmen and Airwomen and never hesitated to support a member of his team in need.

On October 11, 2015, Master Sergeant Kuhse died in support of Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL. Despite this tragedy, Master Sergeant Kuhse’s legacy remains in the hearts and spirit of each airman and airwoman that he mentored. His humility, dedication and honor stand as an example to all who knew him. Master Sergeant Kuhse’s strong commitment to preserving the freedom and liberties of the people of the State of Michigan and of the United States of America will never be forgotten.

In his free time, Master Sergeant Kuhse enjoyed bowling, golfing, basketball and softball. An avid runner since middle school, he continues to hold the Comstock NE Middle School 800 meter run record with a time of 2:13:07. He loved spending afternoons outside playing cornhole with friends. He was a masterful euchre player and could always be found cheering on the University of Michigan Wolverines with a big “Go Blue!”

Master Sergeant Kuhse’s most important assignment was that of husband and father. He was united in marriage to his wife, Torri, and they were blessed with four children, Madeline, Eliana, Tristan and Caleb. His heart overflowed with love for his family. Master Sergeant Kuhse made it a point to always let others know how much they meant to him with a kind word, a phone call or a letter. He engaged others with kindness and respect, always offering a helping hand or a word of encouragement. His friends often say that his smile “could brighten the darkest of days” and the legacy left by Master Sergeant Kuhse reminds us all to stay positive and celebrate both life’s successes and disappointments.

IN SPECIAL TRIBUTE, Therefore, this document is signed to honor the life of Master Sergeant Gregory T. Kuhse. It is our privilege to extend our deepest appreciation for the honorable sacrifice that he made in order to protect our country. We stand together today to extend our sincerest condolences and our greatest thanks to Master Sergeant Kuhse’s many family and friends.

May. Jason gave his life in the ultimate act of service to his country. On June 29, 2015, Senior Chief Petty Officer May passed away of non-combat related causes while deployed at sea as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the war on terrorism that began in 2001. He was assigned to the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship serving in the 5th Fleet of the Navy.

During his extensive service that lasted almost 19 years, Senior Chief Petty Officer May earned numerous awards and honors. He was the recipient of the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5), Good Conduct Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO Medal, Expert Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon, and the Expert Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.

Senior Chief Petty Officer May was dedicated to his family and was a loyal friend. He will always be remembered by those who knew him for the treasured memories of their wonderful times together. He set standards of honor and duty during his service and throughout his life that epitomized the values we seek in the men and women who dedicate themselves to serving our country. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of service of which his family and friends can be proud.

IN SPECIAL TRIBUTE, Therefore, this document is signed as a memorial and acknowledgement of Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason P. May for his outstanding and exemplary service to the State of Michigan and the United States of America. We wish his family, friends, and the entire Navy community comfort in their memory of him as a symbol of inspiration in the pursuit of freedom, liberty, and a greater hope. May his family and friends know of our deepest respect and gratitude for his selfless sacrifice, knowing the high regard in which he is held by the citizens of the great State of Michigan.

ClOsing RemaRks

This weekend we will extend the solemn observance of Memorial Day beyond the confines of the

Senate floor into the homes, churches, parades, and cemeteries throughout our great state of Michigan.

Through the sacrifices of those whom we honor today, most of our families, including my own, have

not borne the loss of a loved one in the defense of our nation. Memorial Day is a day for each of us

who have been blessed through these sacrifices, to dedicate some small measure of our time to honor

our fallen heroes. There is no greater love than to lay one’s life down on behalf of a friend. Whether we

know them personally or not, our freedom is a tribute to many such friends throughout the history of

this great nation. We thank God for such friends and humbly ask that we honor their sacrifices through

the lives that we lead.
