What’s Collo™?

Collo is short for collocation. Collocations are pairs or small groups of words thatoccur together frequently in spoken and written language. A Collo “just soundsright” because we hear and see it over and over again.

Examples of Verb-Noun Collos are do laundry, make a mistake, and get a cold. InEnglish, have a party sounds right, but make a party sounds wrong. Why Collo? To become critical thinkers, we must first build aknowledge base. Otherwise, it is difficult to applyknowledge in any meaningful, lasting way.

The most natural way to build knowledge is throughrepetitive exposure to Collos. Without it, superficialunderstanding leads to poor performance at higher levels.We become frustrated and overwhelmed. This destroysour confidence. We lose steam before we even get going.

Now for the good news!The more easily we can recall information, the moreconfident and curious we are. When repetitive practice

is relaxing and enjoyable, we want to do it. We’re motivated to learn and ready totake it to the next level.

ColloLearn makes it fun and natural to sort words, study facts, recall terms,access data, identify details, retrieve images, select ideas, and recycle information.

Please don’t memorize to learn! It’s all about the 3 Rs: Relax, Repeat, Remember.

What are ColloTunes?

ColloTunes are songs created and performed by Jason R. Levine (Fluency MC) tobuild knowledge in academic subjects. Every ColloTune is rich in Collos that stick inyour head! Instead of repeating sentences “robot-like” or staring at lists, you acquireknowledge as an active participant. Conscious effort to memorize gives way tofluent, subconscious learning.

ColloTunes are available for English, mathematics, social studies, sciences,and foreign languages. They have been used in elementary, middle, and highschools and in preparation courses for the TOEFL, TOEIC, GED, SAT, and GRE.

A to Z Procedure

Please repeat, reorder, or omit steps to suit your age, level, and learningstyle. The key is to have fun. If it turns into work, it won’t work!

(1) Read and Listen to Tracks 1, 2, and 3 of the CD or DVD. Follow along with the lyrics.

(2) Read, Listen, and Rap along to A to Z Chant. In the second half, rap the letters that are missing.

(3) Read, Listen, and Rap along to A to Z Letters. In the second half, rap the words that are missing.

(4) Read, Listen, and Rap along to A to Z Sounds. In the second half, rap the sounds that are missing.

(5) Listen to the Instrumental Versions. Rap by yourself (or with your friends or classmates).

(6) Read, Listen, and Speak along with Tracks 4-11 of the CD (4-9 on the DVD).

(7) Listen and Write with the Writing Practice. Photocopy the pages first (or print them at colloandspark.com). Fill in the blanks before, after, or while you listen. Pause the CD when you need time to write.
