How many minutes do you have to live, to find someone worth dying for?

Prologue…

―C‘mon Chels! This snowman won‘t build itself you know…‖ Will squealed and ran towards me tugging me

towards his snowman he considered as his masterpiece—well in fact, it is only consisted by partly eaten carrot

as the snowman‘s nose, two brittle buttons as its eyes.

―Get two sticks first. Maybe those branches will do,‖ I pointed to the old oak tree past our house. It was

covered with snow.

―Ok, but first, tell me how you feel about this!‖ he shouted then threw a snowball directly at me. He giggled

as I roll another snowball then we played.

How I wished it is always like this. The smile on our faces never fades.

How I wished I could naively smile and laugh again like we used to over simple things and felicity.

But life keeps on emerging and tearing us apart.

Now, I miss my brother very much. If it was just that easy to return those moments when we were just

children—enjoying the raindrops on our roof, enjoying the snowballs we used to hit on our faces, and the

snowman we never finished to build.

If I had only more time, I could be able to be in his arms again.

But unfortunately, I couldn‘t—he is a thousand miles away.

Chapter one.

Distant

Chelsea Grayson wandered around their new built house. It was cozy and warm. She seemed to approve the new marriage of his father. It hadn‘t been easy for her to accept it, but then she realized her father deserved someone better. Grayson had always loathed her mom for being too hard and materialistic on her father. Maybe the last thing her father, Walter, needed was to meet someone who really loves and admires him, she always thought. While Chelsea was roaming around, her naïve emerald eyes were caught by a photo album inside the box for discarded items. As she opened it, she saw Cordelia‘s former family. Cordelia was from Texas and she always had these fancy braided hair styles that suited her gorgeous young-looking face. She is already 40, but she looks only 28. You can‘t notice that she‘s already widowed because of her blooming, beautiful smile. That‘s what Chelsea had always admired about her. Cordelia can handle her problems by smiling, staying calm, and being strong. Cordelia had been Chelsea‘s babysitter for about 5 years since her mother and father are busy working. She always tells story to Chelsea about her son and how they were alike in many ways. But, Chelsea had never seen her son. And she had already forgotten his name. Before Chelsea could open another page, she was ceased by a car‘s horn. She placed the album back to its box. She walked near the window and saw her father carrying the bags of Cordelia—and her son. Chelsea ran towards the door and opened it. ―Hi Cordelia,‖ Chelsea greeted politely, like she always did when Cordelia visits her every weekends. ―Hello, dear,‖ Cordelia greeted back and began to introduce her son—for the first time personally—to Chelsea. ―Meet my son, and now your stepbrother, Will. Say hello Will‖ Will walked slowly and shyly smiled at Chelsea. Chelsea smiled back. ―Why don‘t you two check out the playground on our backyard while Cordelia and I fix your things,‖ Walter gestured and pointed on the back door. Both Chelsea and Will‘s eyes widened. They both liked how to play outdoor games like sports. For a very young age, Will became already a good player of Baseball, while Chelsea became good at swimming. ―Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I‘m Chelsea,‖ Chelsea stretched out her hand and reach for Will‘s. ―Don‘t be shy. Cordelia already told me some stories about you. We‘re family now,‖ Will stared at Chelsea‘s hand for a while before reaching it. They shook hands and became good friends for the whole day. Will and Chelsea cheerfully played on the sandbox. Will asked Chelsea about her favorites—like favorite color, which is turquoise blue, food, which is pizza, and novel, which is ―The Secret Garden‖. While she asked Will about how he became good at baseball. Will told Chelsea how his father taught him. He was not bothered by his father‘s death anymore. Thus, he made it his inspiration to continue his father‘s Baseball Legacy. He dreamed of competing for the World Finals. Determination filled Will‘s spirit, and Chelsea was inspired to be better in her early swimming career. ―If you‘re already a baseball hot-shot, why are you seemed too shy to make friends?‖ she noticed Will‘s shyness earlier that he hid behind Cordelia‘s back. ―Well, I don‘t really want to make friends. Oh, for the record, thank you for being my fourth friend,‖ Chelsea felt lucky because for just a matter of minutes, he had already considered her as his friend and eventually, a part of his life.

Page 5: A Thousand Miles Away

―I‘m only your fourth friend?‖ She asked confusely. ―Yeah, first is God, then my dad, then my mom, then you,‖ He answered and gave her a lotus flower he picked near the sandbox. They both giggled and felt comfortable with each other. ―I hope you won‘t leave me like my father did.‖ He added sullenly. Chelsea patted his back. ―I‘m sure that when you already fulfilled your dream, he will be your number one fan,‖ she smiled, trying to encourage Will. ―How can he see my trophy? He‘s already in heaven,‖ Chelsea noticed that it was already dark. She looked up above the wide sky. Stars started shining above them. ―Look up, Will!‖—Will looked up—―Look at those stars. Sometimes, I imagined they were the ones we loved in heaven. Look for the shiniest star you see… Think of it as your father. Haha! Look! Reach out your hand!‖ They both stretched their arms and pretentiously touched the stars. ―See? He‘s not that far away, right?‖ Will half-smiled. ―You‘re right. Thank you Chelsea.‖ They smiled at each other. Cordelia and Walter invited them to go inside to have their dinner.

13 years later… Chelsea helped Will pack his luggage inside their van. He qualified for the university Cordelia and Walter picked for him. He will be taking Law. Chelsea tried hard to stop her tears from flowing, but she failed. Chelsea knows it would be selfish for her to not let Will go to that university. But, it was too hard for her whenever Will isn‘t around. Will reached out for her and hugged her. In his arms, she wept. In his arms, she felt secured and safe. In his arms, she felt she‘s home. But now he‘s going away, she felt lost. ―It‘s O.K. Chels. It‘s only New Greenwich. We‘ll be seeing each other again on Christmas,‖ Will said softly, trying to stop Chelsea from crying. ―I know. I‘m just going to miss you. It feels lonely here whenever you‘re away,‖ Chelsea answered in a childish manner. Walter beeped the van‘s horn and gestured Will to ride on because they will catch traffic on the way to the train station. ―You‘re going to be O.K. When things become bad again, just call me. Though I‘m away, I‘m still your brother to protect you.‖ ―O.K. I love you. See you again on Christmas,‖ Chelsea answered and hugged Will again. ―Awww. I love you too, Chels. Yes, I‘ll be here on Christmas. And hey, one reminder,‖ –Will stopped for a while—―No boyfriends first, ok?‖ Chelsea half smiled. ―Will, don‘t worry. There‘s no other hot guy around here except you and dad.‖ They both laughed. Chelsea isn‘t really interested in romantic relationships. But, she had a crush for Will for a very long time. She knows that if it continues to develop, it would be a forbidden love. But she didn‘t care. They‘re not related by blood, so she still hopes they can be together. Will waved goodbye. Chelsea stared as the van shrink smaller and smaller making Will and her more distant between each other. But their brotherly and sisterly love knows no boundaries.

Chapter two.

Begin Again. When Chelsea and Will separated, they made their own lives. Chelsea created friends and became part of a famous sorority—an academic sorority, and got a scholarship because of her notable performance in the national‘s level of the swimming tournament. At the same time, Chelsea also became the top of the class. She also wanted to go to the same university as Will‘s. He became her inspiration to break the limits, test the waters, and find her niche. On the other hand, Will became one of the most brilliant debaters in New Greenwich Debate Society. Their professor introduced him to other politicians and recommended him that he can be one of the best lawyers. Will also discovered other talents like composing songs, and writing journals. One of his essays was featured on a magazine, The best of Greenwich, and a short research study was featured on a monthly journal, Psychology Today. He also engaged in Academics. He became a representative of the university on History Challenge, an annual competion of universities in New Greenwich. ―Chelsea, let me help you with that,‖ Erika, Chelsea‘s bestfriend since Will left, approached her and helped her to pack her things inside a big duffle bag. Erika‘s new blonde-dyed hair matched her pale-white face. ―Oh, uhm, thanks Erika,‖ Chelsea felt awkward whenever Erika is around since that day when Erika confessed that she liked Will, and that she‘ll wait until the day Will return. She tried her best to sustain their friendship to the point that she becomes phony sometimes. It was Christmas break. Chelsea stayed in a dormitory and she‘s already packing her things. She glanced at her watch—8:30 a.m. Cordelia will fetch her at about 12 p.m. and they agreed to stop by a café to bond, while Walter is on a trip. Walter is a seaman, while Cordelia is a pre-school teacher. Chelsea can‘t wait to see Will again. She just hoped Erika wouldn‘t join them in the break so they can have a moment together—with only their family. While helping her pack, Erika told Chelsea her plans for the vacation. Erika planned a summer job as a life guard on a newly built resort few blocks away from their house. She also invited Chelsea to the Swimming club‘s foundation party—Erika‘s a part of it too. Until, she began to ask about Will, ―So, is Will arriving this vacation?‖ Chelsea didn‘t know if she would tell the truth or not. ―Uhmm. Yeah, he said so. He missed my father and Cordelia. Why‘d you ask?‖ ―Nothing. Just wanted to see him. Can I come?‖ Chelsea‘s heart beat fast. Faster than it normally does. She knows it is not impossible for Will to like Erika—she was his first kiss. Back on seventh grade, Will insisted to have his first kiss. He was being teased as a weak boy. Our school isn‘t as prestige as others in New Greenwich. Chelsea thought of kissing Will. But then she realized, it would be awkward since Will looks like he doesn‘t want to kiss Chelsea. Then Erika came into the picture. She was considered as the hottest girl back then. She was the president of the academics club, secretary of the Supreme Student Government, and the founder of our schoolpaper office, The Millenium. Will doesn‘t really have feelings for Erika, he just thought that Erika would be the hottest girl to kiss, and he won‘t be teased anymore. It was easy for him because at the first place, Erika was in love with him. She is

Page 7: A Thousand Miles Away

normally attracted to guys who read, athletic, and quiet. When she heard that Will just used her, she broke. She began failing her tests and became destructed. Erika‘s ‗moving on‘ process never ended until now. ―Are you ready to see him again?‖ ―I think so. Maybe we can have a fresh start.‖ ―Do you think he still likes you?‖ Chelsea tries to discourage Erika. She doesn‘t want to hurt her. But she also loved Will. She can‘t continuously endure the pain whenever she sees Will together with another girl. ―I still hope, though he never really liked me,‖ Chelsea forced a smile. While waiting at the dormitory lobby, Erika left because she had an early appointment to her dentist. After a few minutes, Cordelia arrived and helped Chelsea put her bags to the van. ―Hey sweetheart,‖ ―Hey mom, ready?‖ Cordelia nodded. Chelsea glanced to her watch again—12:03 p.m. She can‘t stop from watching her wrist watch time to time. At 5 p.m., Walter will fetch Will, and she can‘t wait to see him again.

Chelsea helped Cordelia make the preparations for the arrival of Will. She wanted to make Christmas break special. Now is different. She rarely sees her brother. So, she‘s going to make the break extra special. She cooked Will‘s favorite dish, Paella. Chelsea reminisced the first time they‘ve tasted Paella. Cordelia is a good cook, and they ate about three bowls of the dish. Chelsea do missed Will—a lot. For the last time, Chelsea glanced at her watch—5:04 p.m. There were three knocks on the door. She excitedly opened it and hoped it was Walter and Will. But to her surprise, it was the officer. ―Are you Mrs. Cordelia Grayson.‖ ―Ohh, I‘m her stepdaughter. She‘s inside. Come in officer.‖ Chelsea called Cordelia. The officer explained that Walter and Will were currently at the hospital. Will suddenly collapsed when he got off the train. The doctor is still diagnosing what disease he might have caught. When they got off the taxi, they quickly ran inside the hospital. When they reached room 32, they saw Will, already awaken. Cordelia quickly hugged him and gave him a peck on his forehead. While Chelsea reached for his hand and held on it tightly. Will ignored her and took away his hand. Chelsea was surprised, but this is not the right time to think about herself. Through his eyes, Chelsea can tell his life and condition is in great peril. Walter and Cordelia got up to buy some food to eat. Cordelia will stay overnight at the hospital. Chelsea also wants to, but Walter adviced her to watch the house for a while. For a few minutes, Chelsea tried to have a conversation with Will. But he seemed to ignore her. He‟s changed, she thought. ―Will, is there a problem?‖ ―Chelsea, just go home. I want to be alone.‖ ―Let us talk for a while, please. I just missed my big brother,‖ Chelsea smiled. Will stared at her for a while. But then he looked away. ―I don‘t want to talk. Please leave, Chelsea. Let me rest,‖ she lowered her head. Her eyes became blurry. As she left the room, tears began streaming her face. They are just few inches away, but he seemed to be out of reach—like he was a thousand miles away. Chelsea missed Will. But now, she missed the old Will. Will has changed. The look upon his eyes is now not remotely gentle. How Chelsea wished they can start over again. Begin again with a smile that they used to have.

Chapter three

Sunset Will spent about three days in the hospital. The doctor said that the reason why he collapsed is that he lacks vital nutrients and has an eating disorder. The two days were spent for his recovery in the hospital. A week and two days is still remaining. Chelsea still hopes to make up with her brother. The way home from the hospital was quiet. Chelsea isn‘t used not talking to Will. Even though they are near with each other in the back seat, they seemed to be two worlds apart—she is reading a novel by John Gray, Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus, while he is reading the editorial section of the news paper. Chelsea—aside from being a good swimmer—also wanted to be a psychiatrist, so naturally she loved psychology books and novels that tackle the reality of life. On the other hand, Will likes reading the daily newspaper. He takes it as a foundation for him to be a lawyer. He must be updated on the current news, not only about the country, but also around the globe. When they arrived, Chelsea was surprised to see Erika impatiently waiting on the porch of their house. ―Ghad, Chels. Wher‘ve you been? I‘ve been calling for hours!‖ Erika exclaimed. She is also close with the Grayson couple, so she‘s not shy in acting normally. Her frowny face faded when she saw Will getting out of the Van. She quickly fixed her messy hair and gave him a smile. ―Oh, hi… Will… S-so glad you‘re able to return for Christmas.‖ ―Well, I missed it here,‖ The atmosphere felt awkward for Chelsea—she felt out of place. With a punch of jealousy, she quickly excused herself and ran quickly inside her room and locked the door. She envies Erika. Will seemed to be happy to see Erika, while she is only ignored. Still, Chelsea is confused. She can‘t remember what she that would have made Will ignore her. Is he angry at her? For what? There are many questions rolling around her mind that knocked her down to sleep. She loved Will, that‘s why she can‘t comprehend what‘s happening at current.

Chelsea called out for Cordelia, Walter and Will as she served breakfast. She noticed Will isn‘t around. It didn‘t bother her. Traditionally, every 7 to 8 a.m., he takes Jacob for a walk. Jacob is a canine dog he received as a gift when he graduated middle school. It was from Walter—and Chelsea. She would skip recess just to contribute for the money to buy Jacob. When Will returned, the air once again became awkward. ―Hi Chels. I saw Will giving Jacob a bath. He invited me to join you. Do you mind?‖ He returned with Erika. Chelsea felt her cheeks turned red. It was natural when she becomes… jealous. ―Sure, no prob.‖ Chelsea could be the best actress of the year. She doesn‘t fail in pretending she‘s ok—that‘s everything‘s fine. The sight of Will‘s smile gave warmth to Chelsea‘s heart. But the fact that it is a smile because of Erika—and not her—tears her heart apart. Erika‘s visit to the Graysons‘ house became more often—in other words… everyday. Chelsea is being suffocated by the thought that Will and Erika can be together again. Well, she didn‘t mind. It is his brother‘s choice if he likes Erika. But she couldn‘t stand not talking to him the whole break. She missed Will every single day since the day he left for college. Now‘s the only chance for them to bond, but Erika stole the picture. She doesn‘t seem to understand that she‘s a hindrance for Chelsea and Will to have a special moment with each other. Chelsea can‘t blame Erika though. Even if she‘s not here, Will won‘t still talk to Chelsea—and she never knew why.

Page 10: A Thousand Miles Away

Erika left early because her dad texted her that she has a practice for their recital. She plays violin which added a spark of charm to her personality. Before she left, she gave a swift, soft kiss on Will‘s lips. He seemed to be playing with her feelings, yet she‘s taking it too seriously. Because of college life, Will learned to flirt and have flings. Chelsea saw Will having some reverie on their rooftop. Now is the chance—and probably would be the lasy. It is the last day of break. After the sun sets, Will would leave again to New Greenwich. When she reached the rooftop of their house, they stared at each other for a moment. Good thing, Will didn‘t move away. ―Hey Will. Is everything O.K?‖ ―Yeah. Everything‘s cool. ‗Bout you?‖ ―I missed you. Why do you keep on ignoring me for the whole Christmas break. Did I do something wrong? I don‘t have a boyfriend. I continued and sustained my swimming career. I became top of the class. All for you. And now, you‘re just ignoring me. What happened, Will?‖ Chelsea felt her tears roll down her cheeks. She felt she‘s not good enough. She felt all her efforts were wasted. ―It‘s what‘s best. It isn‘t easy not talking to you. I sacrificed too much. Believe me or not, this is what‘s good for you,‖ Good for Chelsea? She was confused. What‘s good for her is Will‘s love and care which seemed to vanish. ―Good for me? It tears my heart, Will. I‘m really looking forward to see you again this break. But you seemed to be unhappy and reluctant to see me. Why‘s that?‖ Chelsea really demanded for an answer. ―Chels, I‘m a grenade. One day, I‘ll explode. Many people will get hurt because of me. I don‘t want you to be hurt like them. You know how protective I am to you. I don‘t want you to be unhappy because of me.‖ Before Chelsea could even answer, Will came downstairs and rode directly to the van. As the sun came out of Chelsea‘s vision, a teardrop escaped from her eyes.

Chapter four.

What lies behind “I‟m a grenade…” “I don‟t want you to be hurt…” Will‘s voice kept on repeating inside Chelsea‘s head. They‘re last meeting isn‘t that good. She didn‘t understand anything that he said. He‟s a grenade. So what if he can hurt Chelsea? He already hurt her when he ignored her during the whole break and spent it with someone else. During the remaining days, Chelsea began to be unenthusiastic at school. From being the top of the class, she was out of the honors. Her rank as a president of the Academics club became at stake. But, the only one she sustained is her swimming career—because it is her passion. She‘s making all the efforts in the swimming club for herself and not to impress Will—that is the difference. Due to these circumstances, she lost her scholarship. Her parents needed to pay the fee. The amount they have to pay for a month had tripled. Chelsea didn‘t mean it. She just lost the inspiration of pushing harder and doing her best. ―We need to be thriftier, ok? We‘ll work as a team. We‘ll work this out,‖ Cordelia always says. The Graysons are now facing poverty. Chelsea was very guilty of it. But, she received a new hope from Cordelia. Cordelia is indeed doing her best to contribute to the family. After her classes at school, she now tutors some rich kids who fail to pass the entrance exams of famous and exclusive universities and schools.

Chelsea‘s elegant eyes woke when she heard a glass dropped. She quickly ran into the kitchen. But before she entered it, she saw Cordelia and Walter fighting… again. They were talking about the budget of the family. Walter was out of his job because of attacking his co-worker. ―Please Walter, stop gambling. If you‘ll continue being unemployed, our family will starve.‖ ―I don‘t care! I worked hard before… and what did I get?! Bullshit!‖ ―Don‘t be so selfish Walter. Please do this for Will. I don‘t want to lose him.‖ Walter kissed Cordelia on her forehead then to her lips. He looked at her hazel eyes. ―Sorry honey. I promise to protect him.‖ Then the argument stopped. Chelsea ran inside her room even before Walter and Cordelia could get out of the kitchen. The following nights became more suspicious for Chelsea. Cordelia and Walter were talking about a certain matter about Will. She asks, but they do not answer. They always say everything is alright. But Chelsea never believed it. Sooner or later, she‘s going to find out. ―Will‘s life is in grave condition. Let‘s fetch him from New Greenwich. His family needs to be by his side,‖ Cordelia said. Chelsea felt she‘s near the answer to the never-ending questions about Will. ―What do you expect? He‘s safer there. New Greenwich has the best hospitals. Here‘s the fare. Donate him blood,‖ Blood donation? What for?—Chelsea thought. ―Walter, there‘s something I needed to tell you‖—there was a long silence—―I can‘t donate him blood. We‘re not the same type. I only adopted him. He was the only son of my best friend, Thalia. I owe her family my life. Thalia was a stripper. When she fell for Derek‘s trap and became pregnant, her family dumped her.

Page 13: A Thousand Miles Away

During that time, Mark and I are craving for a child. But I was barren. Sorry but I‘m not even useful enough to save my son!‖ Cordelia sobbed. It has somehow given hope, at the same time, fear to Chelsea; the hope that they can be legally together—the fear of the disease which attacked Will. Fear covered Walter‘s eyes.Walter already treated Will as his own son. He sat on the chair feeling wobbly. He knew one person who can help Will, but he was too selfish to sacrifice it. ―I apologize, Cordelia. But I can‘t sacrifice Chelsea. We‘re near to lose one of our children. I can‘t bear two,‖ Chelsea can help Will? Her eyes widened. ―Chelsea and Will have the same blood type. I really wanted to help. But we don‘t have enough money. And, Will has not enough time to wait. Only one can go there. Chelsea can‘t. She‘s too young. Travelling to New Greenwich alone is dangerous. I‘m sorry Cordelia.‖ He hugged Cordelia and kissed her on top of her head. She whispered, „I understand… I understand‟ ―No, Dad. Will needs me. I CAN SACRIFICE ANYTHING FOR HIM,‖ because of too much emotion that Chelsea is feeling, she accidentally shouted. She indeed can sacrifice anything for Will—even her life or safety. ―Chelsea, you‘re staying here. Let us handle it,‖ Walter scolded. ―What else can you do dad? I‘m the only one who can save him. I can handle things now. I‘m older and more mature. Just trust me with this—for Will‘s sake,‖ Chelsea‘s tears dripped from her eyes. When it comes to Will, she becomes selfless. ―I don‘t want to lose anyone from you,‖ Walter pleaded and took Chelsea‘s hands. ―That‘s why you have to let me go… If not, you might lose Will.‖ Chelsea finally convinced Walter. Now she understands what lies behind Will‘s ignorance. Now she understands what Will meant when he said he was a grenade. But no matter what pain she might feel along the way, she doesn‘t care. If feeling pain is the way to show her love for Will, she‘s willing to risk everything.

Page 14: A Thousand Miles Away

Chapter five Along the way Chelsea Grayson pulled her bag and stepped into the train. She waved goodbye at Cordelia and Walter. As they gradually shrink on her vision, she felt fearless. Distance is now her new source of strength. Back then, New Greenwich was a big, scary city for Chelsea. But she‘s ready to face it… anything for Will. ―Ni Hao,‖ a freckled girl with squinty eyes sat on the empty seat next to Chelsea. From her appearance, she can infer that the girl was from Anihc because she was carrying a big bag of low-quality products that she sells. ―Pretty girl! Try my products. You won‘t regret it. They‘re from good quality.‖ When you see her products, they are very flimsy. ―No thank you.‖ ―Where you going little girl? You seemed to be quite young to travel alone.‖ ―I‘m going to New Greenwich. My brother is in trouble.‖ The girl smiled. ―You must really love your family, eh?‖ ―They‘re the only thing that I treasure most. So, yeah. I love them—a lot.‖ The girl said the way to Anihc is still long, so she told me a folktale from her hometown entitle, The soul of the Great Bell. It was about a daughter who sacrificed herself for her father. From it, I can predict some cultural values of Anihc citizens—the father-daughter love for each other. Chelsea missed Walter already. When the Anihcnese girl got off the train, another person sat next to Chelsea. The train is beginning to be filled by many people. The next person was a boy about four years older than Chelsea. He was from Dnaliaht. He seemed to be nature-friendly type of person. While riding on the train, he has a paintbrush and a big notebook. He paints trees and the beauty of mother nature. He seemed to be really living his passion. He told stories about Dnaliaht. Freedom is their pride and strength. Years ago, New Greenwich planned to dominate all the districts. Dnaliaht was the only district that was not colonized. Citizens there, Iaht, value freedom—especially freedom of experession. When the guy got off the train, Chelsea had a glimpse of Dnaliaht. It was clean and green. There roam what they called toktok cabs which are environment-friendly. The smile of the Iahts pictures their freedom. They didn‘t feel the pain that other districts felt before. They were lucky. ―Konnichiwa,‖ the pale-white guy with squinty eyes greeted. Chelsea smiled back. The guy was loquacious and introduced himself as Mah Lee Bug. He told stories from his hometown, Napaj, since Chelsea was the first to ask about it. He told a story entitled, The aged Mother. It showed the cultural value of Napajnese—the love of a son for his mother. Once in Napaj, there was a tradition of killing old people. To them, they were useless; that for their old age, they are incapable of doing great and useful things. But in the end of the story, it showed that knowledge coming from the old is still useful. But what highlighted the story for Chelsea is when the boy protected his mother—it reminded her of Will‘s love for his mother…not literally. Mah Lee Bug got off the train. A good-looking woman sat beside Chelsea. She has also squinty eyes and wears heavy make-up. Chelsea again asked. She‘s Chun Li, from Aerok. She told stories to Chelsea. Aerok was a place for love and Valentines. Their literature initially talks about romance. One example is the Tale of Chunyang. It displays the faith and fidelity of wives to their husbands in Aerok. Even if they are separated by lengthy distance, they still loved

Page 15: A Thousand Miles Away

each other. Their love knows no boundaries—it reminded Chelsea of her love for Will. The question is, does Will still love her? When Chelsea glanced around, she saw the sign, Welcome to New Greenwich! She quickly stepped out of the train. She felt the breeze of New Greenwich. She visualizes Will. She cried for a while and began to walk the New Greenwich Hospital.

Page 16: A Thousand Miles Away

EPILOGUE ―Hey Will. Look! I‘ve won the London Olympics in Beijing! You should be proud of me ‗ya know…‖ Chelsea kept on talking, but Will stayed still. ―…and uhhm. Cordelia had this special promotion. She became the principal of their Elementary school. I knew she can do it…‖ ―…and Walter… Dad… He had his job back. His manager knew the truth that he did nothing wrong with the incident with his co-worker…‖ Will still hadn‘t said a word. ―Will, I love you. I‘ll always will. And, I always will be sorry I‘m not in time to save you. I love you Will‖ Chelsea‘s tears dropped on Will‘s grave. Will may be dead, but her love for him lives forever.
