2. Mårbacka – The home of Selma LagerlöfSelma Lagerlöf, one of the best known authors in the world, was born and grew up at Mårbacka. Her debut novel, Gösta Ber-ling s saga in 1891 was a tremendous success, as were Jerusalem 1902 and The Wonderful Adventures of Nils 1906. In her last will and testament Selma Lagerlöf wrote that Mårbacka should be preserved as a memorial estate and be shown to the public.

3. Ulvsby Herrgård Ulvsby Manor, has a long history. It became the residence of the county sheriff by order of Queen Kristina as early as the 17th century. During the 19th century the sheriff who lived here in-spired Selma Lagerlöf to create the fictional character Scharling in the novel ‘Gösta Berling’s Saga. Ulvsby Manor is at the center of the ‘Värmlandic Food Kingdom’ where local producers have created the many delicacies to be found in this area. Since 2015 Ulvsby Herrgård is in the White Guide.

4. Sliperiet – Art and gastronomy in a creative mixWelcome to a unique environment where cultural heritage meet contemporary art and where countryside meet urban lifestyle. In 2015 Sliperiet also took the step into the world of gastronomy. The menu is retrieved and inspired by the four elements – air, earth, fire and water. 8. Sala silvermineSala Silver Mine was the largest and most important producer of silver in Sweden for 400 years. The mine has a long and interesting history. No one knows exactly when they first discovered silver in Sala, though there are reasons to believe that the mine is from the Middle Ages. Continuous mining started in the beginning of the 16th century and lasted till the beginning of the 20th century. Visit the mine and learn about its interesting and dramatic story.

9. Engelsbergs BrukEngelsberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an outstanding example of an influential European industrial complex of the 17th-19th cen-turies, with important technological remains and the associated administrative and residential buildings intact. It is the best preserved and most complete example of a Swedish iron-working estate, of the type which produced the superior grades of iron, using primitive smelting furnaces, that made Sweden the economic leader in this field for two centuries.

11. Järnvägsmuseet – Swedish Railway MuseumCome and see the oldest, heaviest, quickest and most beautiful engines! In Gävle we have one of the world’s finest collections of historical railway trains. Experience the museum through tours and visit Hennan’s station from the 1940s and Hosäter, the lineman’s cottage. You can go into many of the engines and carriages.

15. Erik-Anders in AstaSince 2012, the Hälsingland farms have been included on UNESCO world heritage list. Erik-Anders in Asta is one of them. Here you find both a visitors Centre for the world heri-tage, a shop and a café. Guided tours are given in the summer. And, since Spring 2015, Erik-Anders offers newly renovated accommodation in a small Bed&Breakfast. With considerable respect and passion for the farmhouse and the site’s cultural history, five rooms have been renovated, each with its own character and charm.

16. Växbo – Tradition, design and excellent foodVäxbo Lin weaves and sews linen products at its factory in Hälsingland as one of the few linen weaving-mills left in Sweden. Doing this, Växbo Lin, work to preserve and develop a Swedish cultural heritage. Welcome to visit the factory, see the production and shop in the factory outlet. Within walking distance from the factory there is a blacksmith, a craft- and design shop and pottery. Växbo Lin is also next to award winning restaurant Växbo Krog. Here food is prepared according to season and weather, with local Hälsingland ingredients and service that is personal while unobtrusive - all to create a memorable experience for the guest.

17. JärvsöIn the pittoresque village of Järvsö you’re surrounded by nature and culture. Visit the cultural centre of Stenegård, combining old traditions of craftsmanship with contemporary art, music and theatre. Lighter lunches and other delicacies are served in the lovely greenhouse Trädgårdscafét. If you are interested in getting acquainted with the Swedish wildlife fauna, a visit to Järvzoo is a must. 18 Grythyttan & Loka brunnGrythyttan is a charming 17th-century village with several sights worth seeing, as the Church with Shingle-clad red-pain-ted church erected in 1632. Step into the the famous Grythyttan Inn and feel the historical atmosphere, dating from 1641 when the Inn was built on the orders of Queen Kristina. Since that time the Inn and its heritage has been well cared for. Its renow-ned for its excellent cuisine and fine winecellar. Loka Brunn is beautifully situated between two lakes, the royal Loka Spa has traditions stretching back to the 18th century. Loka Brunn has provided visitors with life-giving energy for a great many years. People have made pilgrimages here for hundreds of years to meet and drink the spring waters, enjoy themselves and relax. To this day Loka is a favourite spot for people to meet and its popularity is now enhanced by modern facilities.

19 Alfred Nobels BjörkbornThe Nobel Museum in Karlskoga is a museum about Alfred Nobel the inventor, industrialist, donor and founder of the Nobel Prizes. It was here, in Björkborn Manor, that Alfred Nobel lived during the few final summers of his life. He built a laboratory near the Manor in which he continued his research within such areas as propellants and creating artificial rubber. This laboratory survives to the present day housing an exhibi-tion about his work and related industries. In Björkborn Manor itself, visitors can learn more about Alfred as a person.

20 Pershyttan Culture reserveTake the veteran railway from Nora to the mining village of Pershyttan. This small village is well preserved. As is the grand blast furnace, the deep pits, Lockruvan mine and the impressive water wheel that powered a 200-metre long linkage. Go on a guided tour or discover the area on your own.

21 Örebro castleMany chapters in Swedish history have been written inside Örebro Castle s thick walls.Sweden s first Parliament Act was adopted here, and this is also where Karl XIII received the news that the 1810 Parliament in Örebro had chosen Jean Baptiste Bernadotte as heir to the Swedish throne. The former royal palace has become one of Örebro s biggest tourist attractions, with exhibitions, shows and other events held throughout the year. There is also a restaurant with fantastic outdoor seating in summer.

22 Eidsverket Eidsverket and its 250-year-old manor house is located in Bjørkelangen, in Aurskog-Høland municipality. The manor is now a unique place for hosting corporate events and confer- ences during weekdays with its beautifuly restored buildings in statly surroundings. 23 Galleri WürthGalleri Würth Norway opened in 2003 and is one of 15 exhibi-tion spaces in Europe presenting the German Würth Collection. Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth started collecting in the early 1960s, and today the collection holds approximately 17,000 works of art. It consists of paintings, graphic art and sculptures from modernism to contemporary art, as well as a significant number of late medieval art works. Exhibitions rotate regularly. Galleri Würth offers free guided tours every Sunday at 13:00. It is possible to book private events and guided tours, held by educated art historians. At Galleri Würth we organize art and business events, as well as put together various educational art programs.

24 Magnor GlassverkMagnor Glassverk was founded in 1896 in Magnor, in the heart of Scandinavia. Several generations of talented glassblowers have shaped the history of Magnor Glassverk. Today s glass- makers work together with renowned designers to lend a modern touch to a craft steepen in traditions. At the glasswork you can see how glass blowing is done – an art that has been practised for more than a thousand years.

25 Hotel Refsnes GodsRefsnes Gods was originally a country house, in regular use for parties and recreation. Over the last 250 years it has played host to many famous guests: the artists Edvard Munch and Hans Gude, King Oscar II and the feminist writer Camilla Collett, to name a few. The distinctive main building with its two towers is just a stone’s throw from the Oslofjord, and the hotel has its own guest jetty and beach. What do I need to consider before I travel and how do I get to Norway?

Norway is a vast country and the best way to get around is by car. From the south of Østfold to the north of Hedmark the distance is about 500 km. If you are planning to visit the western parts of The Middle of Scandi-navia, you can fly to Oslo and Gardermoen airport, Rygge airport or Karlstad airport (via Frankfurt). It will take about 2 hours to travel by car from Oslo to Sweden and Värmland. If you are travelling by car, you can arrive in Oslo via ferry connections from Kiel, Fredrikshavn and Copenhagen.

What do I need to consider before I travel and how do I get to Sweden?

From Gävle, on the east coast, to the Norwegian border in the west, the distance is about 400 kilometres. The easiest way to get around is by car. If you travel by car, there is a bridge between Denmark and Sweden or ferryconnections for example to Gothenburg. If you prefer to fly to Sweden and arrive at Stockholm Arlanda airport, you are near the eastern parts of the Middle of Scandinavia. If you are going to visit the western parts, we recommend you to fly to Karlstad (via Frankfurt), Oslo and Gardermoen airport or Moss Rygge airport.
