The Soul, Science & Culture of Danny Diaz, the unlikely hero in Disney’s film McFarland USA, the true story of a cross country team that against all odds won the state of California’s first ever high school cross country championship and Rick Miller, Founder of Kids at Hope, a research based organization that studies family, school, and community cultures to better understand the dynamics of how and why many youth struggle physically, emotionally, intellectually are visiting communities across the US and Canada to share the change needed to help all children and youth succeed, No Exceptions! Entitled The Soul, Science and Culture of HOPE this symposium will explore how an entire community beat the odds by believing in its children, supporting them emotionally and academically, and offering them HOPE. Their life consisted of picking almonds and grapes beginning at 5 am each morning up to the time when they had to leave for school only to return to the fields after their school day ended. Their future changed when coach Jim White portrayed by Kevin Costner in the film created a unique opportunity which would change not only Danny’s life but that of his brothers, sister, parents, and community. Beginning in 1993 Rick began a research review project that challenged the “youth at risk” paradigm. His research findings, conclusions, and practices are revolutionizing the understanding of child and youth development and have been adopted by education, juvenile justice, child welfare, and community based youth serving organizations across the US and Canada. Danny Diaz comes from a family of seven brothers and sisters in addition to mom and dad Diaz.
