    INTRODUCTION

The Trismegistos database (www.trismegistos.org) has a geographical section

that centres around the file called 'Places'. This file, which contains both ancient and

modern toponyms, has been built up from two different angles. It lists, in the first

place, every toponym in Egypt where a document incorporated in the database has

been found or written. It used to contain, in the second place, all the toponyms from

the Arsinoites that where studied in the Fayum Project

(http://www.trismegistos.org/fayum/index.php), and all the toponyms with ethnics

that were gathered for the publication of Csaba La'da, Prosopographia Ptolemaica X.

Foreign ethnics in Hellenistic Egypt, 2002. Since so much material had already been

gathered, we decided to extend the file and to start listing every toponym related to

    Egypt.

Since most of the Greek and Latin toponyms were conveniently brought

together in the invaluable Dizionario dei nomi geografici e topografici dell'Egitto greco-

romano by Aristide Calderini and Sergio Daris (I-V, 1935-1987; Suppl. 1-4, 1988-

2007), we started from this publication to make an entry in our database for each

lemmatized toponym in this work. We further compared these data with other

geographical publications. For the Arsinoites we perused the list of Grenfell, Hunt and

Smyly (P. Tebt. 2, 1907, p. 365-413), for the Hermopolites the book of Marie Drew-

Bear (Le nome hermopolite. Toponymes et sites, 1979), for the Oxyrynchites two

publications of Paola Pruneti (I kleroi del nomo Ossirinchite. Ricerca topografica, in

    Aegyptus 55 (1975), p. 159-244 and I centri abitati dell' Ossirinchite. Repertorio

toponomastico, 1981) and for the Herakleopolites the book of Maria Rosario Falivene

(The Herakleopolite nome. A catalogue of the toponyms with introduction and

commentary, 1998). Also the toponyms in the geographical 'gazetteer' of John Baines /

Jaromír Málek, Atlas of ancient Egypt. Revised edition, 2002, have been entered.

Occasional entries have been made from (the mostly obsolete) Carl Wessely,

Topographie des Faijûm (Arsinoites nomus) in griechischer Zeit, 1904, while our work

on Stefan Timm, Das christlich-koptische Ägypten in arabischer Zeit, I-VI, 1984-1992

(with an index compiled by Karl-Heinz Brune in 2007) is still going on. In a next step

also the Demotic toponyms will be entered, but the material gathered seemed already

comprehensive enough to show the first results in this survey.

All the information given here can also be consulted in the database itself, but

it seemed useful to compile in this publication two different lists that might be of use

to papyrologists. The first list is purely alphabetical and contains more than 8700

Egyptian toponyms (omitting the 1800 toponyms from other countries that are also

available in the database). In the course of years a lot of names have been corrected

after their first publication and so became 'ghost names'; for the user's convenience we

also add some 240 of these obsolete toponyms. The second list is geographical and

contains a more abbreviated reference to these 8700 toponyms now organized by

nome or by (major) city, and by ethnic.

For every toponym the information has been more or less standardized, and

certainly not all the information about every place has yet been entered in the

database. Work is still in progress, and certain fields in the database have only been

filled in occasionally, awaiting a more thorough study. There is little doubt that some

of the entries will be double, that more 'ghost names' can be found or that more

identifications between ancient and modern toponyms can be made, but a lot of these

problems will be solved in the future, when also all the occurrences of a certain

toponym in the sources will be inventoried. We have already gathered more than

27.000 of these references, but they can be found in the database and will not printed

    out in this list.

Every toponym in the database receives a random, stable number ('Geo id'),

which is mainly used for easy linking between the different files. For every name we

chose a standard name, usually a transliteration of the most common or

etymologically most correct variant that occurs in the sources. To enable a quick

search in the database, however, we created the field 'Variants', where also a selection

of the other spelling variants are listed. If known, the name of the place is written out

in four other fields as it is found in Greek, Latin, Egyptian and Coptic sources; again

only a selection of the variant spellings is given. When a place can be linked to a

  • 8

modern toponym, that name is given in the field 'modern name'; if the identification

with other toponyms is only tentative, those names can be found in the field

'Identification'. The adjectival form of a toponym is written in transliteration in the

    field Ethnic.

If possible, every toponym is ascribed to one of the nomes or regions of Egypt.

For convenience's sake, we compiled a list of nomes from the Graeco-Roman period

and linked each nome with one of the traditional 'numbers' from the Pharaonic nome

lists (cf. p. 9). We know that this equivalence is not always correct, but anyway it

offers a quick geographical situation. More remarks about the administrative situation

of a place (e.g. a change of nome in the course of years) are added in a separate field.

More precise information about the location of a place can be found in another field.

For every toponym the field 'status' contains a brief description of the kind of place

that is involved; a full list of the terms used can be found on p. 10-15.

For each entry bibliographical information has been added, split up over two

fields. In 'Repertoria' the major geographical publications have been listed, starting

with the Dizionario and Timm, and continuing - in chronological order - with

Wessely, P. Tebt. 2, Drew-Bear, Pruneti and Falivene. The exact page has been given

for every lemma in one of these works, even if it was only a cross-reference. In the

field 'Bibliography' all other bibliographical references can be listed, but for the

moment - except for the Fayum villages - no attempt whatsoever has been made to

    provide an elaborate bibliography.

The field 'Note', finally, mainly contains three kinds of information: (1) the

    reference to a map in the Atlas of Baines / Malek or occasionally to some other map;

    (2) a selection of obsolete readings for the toponym, which is often useful when one is

dealing with older bibliography; (3) other remarks.

I would like to heartily thank my colleagues from the Trismegistos and the

Fayum projects, both in Leuven and in Köln, for the huge amount of preparatory

work that has been done the last ten years in the file 'Villages' and without which it

would not have been possible to compile the present list so swiftly.

Please feel free to report to me ([email protected]) all

mistakes in the following lists you might notice. The correction will be entered

immediately in the Trismegistos database and will eventually find its way in the next

    version of this survey.

The 'status' of the toponyms in the following lists

The field 'Status' gives a short identification of the kind of place a certain

toponym refers to. For each toponym the original expression(s) are listed as they

occur in the sources. Some English terms such as 'area', 'building', 'camp', 'canal', 'city',

'district', 'quarter', 'street', or 'village' have been added in order to group synonymous

expressions. In the following list all the terms used in the database are grouped, partly

alphabetically, partly thematically. Terms not occurring in the database are not listed.

Some of the terms listed below do not occur for toponyms in Egypt, but only

for neighbouring countries that are also included in our database but not in this
