March – April: Local history projects with Curiosity Creative and Space 2

April 4: Grand Launch of Journey to Justice in the North East - Great Hall, Discovery Museum, 1.30pm – ribbon cutting with Marcia Saunders, former US civil rights worker and 2 – 4pm music, history, social change. Guest speakers include Archie Sibeko, ANC activist, trade unionist and freedom fighter. Free but booking is essential: http://bit.ly/1vrxMkC

April 1 – May 29: Display: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech at Newcastle University on receiving an honorary doctorate in 1967, film and images, Great North Museum, Free

Specially curated tours and accessible music workshops exploring exhibition themes. Tailored to individual needs and abilities. Every Monday throughout April. 1.30-3pm. Booking required. Discovery Museum, Free

April 7-30: Sanctuary Artspace, Gateshead. Art for social justice – Paul Piercy, local portrait artist and paintings by children from Corbridge Middle School, open Mon-Thurs, 12-4, Free

April 9: Gary Younge, world-renowned journalist (The Guardian; The Nation). A lecture on voting rights and racial discrimination, 5pm, Baltic Art Gallery. Free but contact [email protected] to book a ticket

April 9: International human rights Stories of struggles for social justice as international human rights activists share their experiences through mixed media, arts and film. Contributions from the Centre for Applied Human Rights; Regional Refugee Forum North East; Angelou Centre; West End Refugee Service; Newcastle University Hong Kong Society and more, 8pm, Northern Stage, £5/£3

April 9 and 10: Community organising, negotiating and strategy A course for young people at Children North East, Benwell including history, arts and social change led by Movement for Change and Journey to Justice.

April 11: Music of North East Heritage by two of Tyneside’s legendary folk musicians, Benny Graham and Johnny Handle, 3pm workshops and 7pm performance, Mining Institute, Newcastle. £5/£3

April 13 and 14: Train the Trainers - course for teachers, youth and community workers and anyone interested in community organising and citizenship education, delivered by Movement for Change and Facing History and Ourselves, 10-4, Newcastle University, £50 per day.

April 17: Dr Joe Street, Senior Lecturer in American History, Northumbria University, the Free Southern Theater part of the US civil rights movement. Theatre as a voice for social protest, 1-2pm Venue to be confirmed. Free

April 21: King of South Shields – when Muhammad Ali came to Tyneside and People Like Us films made and presented by Tina Gharavi of Bridge + Tunnel Productions/Newcastle University, at the Lit and Phil, 7pm £5/£3

April 23 and 30: ‘Sing for Social Justice’ Music making, composition and performance work for six local schools with Bethany Elen Coyle, community musician and teacher. Discovery Museum. Free

April 24: A King’s Speech on Tyneside: Remembering Martin Luther King’s Historic Visit to Newcastle Professor Brian Ward, Northumbria University and Murphy Cobbing, Senior Producer, BBC, 7pm Great North Museum, Free

April 30: Brother Outsider film about Bayard Rustin, phenomenal organiser of the civil rights movement, gay, Quaker and former Communist, Rustin loved the UK and advised peace and anti-racist campaigns here. 7.30pm. Details tbc

May 3: Closing Ceremony and Celebration: Handover to Sheffield - the journey continues, 8pm venue and details to follow
