A STRONG FOUNDATION TRAMCOM at MDC: Building Future-Proof Careers

fter having some success as a small-business owner, Mitchoun “Mitch” Alusma was looking for ways to expand his home remodeling company beyond a one-man operation. His opportunity came when he

spotted a “free courses” flyer while taking construction technology classes at Miami Dade College.

The flyer advertised a program teaching Training for Manufactured Construction, or TRAMCON, a rapidly growing subset of the building industry in which sections of buildings are built at a manufacturing facility, then moved and assembled on site. The TRAMCON career pathway at MDC includes certificates in areas such as Occupational Safety Health Administration, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, manufacturing construction, and more. Students also receive on-the-job training assistance.

“There’s a great need for quality builders, especially here in South Florida, the Keys and the Caribbean where we deal with storms and other challenges,” said Alusma, who after graduating from TRAMCON at MDC became one of the program’s most popular instructors. “It goes beyond just learning how to construct buildings; it’s about learning how to do so correctly and safely.”

Thanks to TRAMCON, Alusma rediscovered his passion for construction, took on commercial property management, and partnered with three of his recently graduated students – Indya Minnis, Jonathan Diaz and John Bootle – on a new business venture focusing on creating sustainable communities.

“The program really opened my eyes to new ideas,” Alusma said. “I gained a wealth of knowledge that I used to lay a foundation for my additional businesses. I can now market my skills and companies to different organizations knowing that I can do a quality job on any project.”

Helping Students Plan Their PathNavigating all the pathways to a dream career can be overwhelming, but it’s far less challenging with the right tools and guidance. That’s why Miami Dade College is expanding its career-resource support by launching the MDC WORKS: Next Generation Career Center.

“The job market is in a constant state of change,” said Dr. John Wensveen, vice provost of academic schools at MDC. “It is important for students to obtain experience in the form of internships, extern-ships, apprenticeships, mentorships, stacked credentials and profes-sional development.”

MDC WORKS will help them find all of that. Designed to enhance other career resources at MDC, the center will help students plan their path while leveraging technology of the future. In addition to having computers with advanced software to help students find pro-fessional skills information and job opportunities, the facility will fea-ture a 3D virtual room – a way to show jobs in specific industries via an interactive experience.

“We understand that students benefit from multiple opportunities to learn about different industries, and MDC WORKS complements all the great things Miami Dade College already does to support career opportunities,” Wensveen said.

The first center will be at Wolfson Campus. Also launching is the MDC WORKS: Apprenticeship Program, which will provide instruc-tion and paid, on-the-job training to students out of high school and experienced workers seeking new careers.

MDC’s first partnering company, Commercial Jet, has developed an aircraft structural assembly and fabrication apprenticeship program. The local transportation, trade, logistics and supply-chain industries will have a big role as well. Interport Logistics Chief Strategy Officer Gary Goldfarb said, “For anyone in the community who wants a job, this is the place to begin.”
