At every major tournament, we hear

the same b i c k e r i n g , grumbl ing, and

whining about the most i ncon

sequent ia l d e t a i l s . For the l i f e

of me, I don ' t understsnd what the

problem i s .

For ins tance, only a nag would

complain about a $25,000 f i r s t

p r i z e j u s t because f i f t h place

pa id on ly $100. You' re there to

w in , a r e n ' t you? So go out there

and w in ! And anyway, w i thout tha t

b ig f i r s t p r i z e , the tournament

would never get the na t i ona l media

exposure t h a t i t does.

You would have to be a r e a l grouch

to be l lyache about an 11PM match

s t a r t i n g a t 3AM. What's the b ig

deal? You ea t , d r i n k , and sleep

pool anyway and besides you won' t

have to worry about spectators

walk ing i n f r o n t of your shot .

L e t ' s not forget the moaning and

groaning about the r u l e s . I s n ' t i t

good experience to round out your

game by p l sy i ng d i f f e r e n t ru les s t

each tournament.

And then t he re ' s the promoter who

says, " I f we sdd $30,000 to the

po t , the p layers w i l l show up even

i f they have to p lay on the

s t r e e t . " We l l , we know be t te r then

t h a t , $10,000 added w i l l do i t .

Promoters want p layers to reserve

t h e i r spot w i th a depos i t . Sup

posedly, t h i s would a l low the

d i r e c t o r to plan b e t t e r . Some

players f e e l t ha t a p layer should

be al lowed t o pay when he shows

up. I f he doesn' t show, somebody

drsws a f o r f e i t and the promoter

has to put up a few more bucks.

That 's not so ser ious ! And so what

i f an a l t e r n a t e was shut out o f

the tournsment because of i t . He

should have committed sooner.

Why would anybody n i t p i c k about

p layers making arrangements to

come a dsy or two l s t e . I t ac tu

a l l y g ives t h e i r opponents t ime to

enjoy the matches, and get used to

the c o n d i t i o n s . The couple of dsys

Why would snybody be c r i t i c a l of

Total Performance Average (TPA) Busch World Open Rankings

If you reviewed any of the scores on the previous pages, you probably noticed a number in parentheses

to the right of each score. It was called the Accu-Stats Average. It is actually another name for

Total Performance Average. Those numbers reflect the player's ability for a single session. What

follows are the overall tournament averages for each contestant.

Notable Matches 13 rN

(continued from page 3) En route to Rudolfo Luat's 11-10 victory over Earl

Strickland (.776), one rack required a total of 14

kick shots!

In the most controversial match of the tournament,

Ron Dobeaenaki (.853) and Jin Mataya (.854) were

tied at 10-10. Dobesenski kicked at a ball and

didn't hit it. But wait, before the cue ball

stopped rolling, it returned to hit the low num

bered object ball. Neither Ron nor Jim could verify

whether a ball then hit a rail or not. The director

ruled in Ron's favor. Jim then pocketed a ball,

hooked himself, and was forced to kick. Ron won

11-10.

It was the most exciting finish of the tournament.

With the score 10-10, Buddy Hall (.863) and Dallaa

Weat (.843) had played a series of safeties leaving

Buddy snookered. After calling the nine ball in the

corner, Buddy shot the cue ball two rails, kissed

the low numbered object ball and pocketed the nine

ball!

In the best played match by both players, Larry

Hubbart (.921) ran out from the break six times

while defeating Buddy Hall (.908) 11-8.

With the score 3-2, Don McCoy (.890) kicked at a

ball. In an unusual set of circumstances, the next

four balls pocketed were all nine balls! McCoy beat

Gulyaaay (.615) 11-5.

Trailing Don McCoy (.889) 1-8, Wade Crane (.871)

won the next ten racks to win 11-8.

In the first of the two final matches between Larry

Hubbart (.827) and Wade Crane (.938), Crane trailed

3-6. For the rest of that match, Crane played

perfect (1.000) pool to defeat Hubbart 11-6.

15 What is an Accu-Stats average (TPA)?

An Accu-Stats average or Total Performance Average (TPA) is to pool the same as a batting average is to baseball. Essentially, everyone pockets balls and everyone makes errors. A simple computation figures an average. Accu-Stats kept score of 125 sessions in Moline. The actual scores and averages for each session are listed in this publication. Usually the player who wins the session has a higher average, but not always. This average gives you a better idea of how the contestants played rather than just the score of the match. The only way that you can figure out your own average is to learn how to keep score. Complete instructions are available free by simply marking the subscription form or writing to Accu-Stats requesting the scoresheet instructions. Once you've learned how to keep score, you can compare yourself with anyone and monitor your progress.

What is an error?

An error is one of the factors used in determining the TPA. There are five possible errors. They are any Miss, Scratch on the Break, Bad Kick, Bad Safety, and Bad Position.
